Lately, when I add a movie to my server, it isn’t matching my media. When I try to manually match my media by movie title it says “no match found”. I thought this was just a temporary issue but it’s still happening after a few weeks and with all the new movies that I add. I have been having to download cover images for any new movies I add. Please help.
Almost sounds like some network issue where your PMS cannot access the online repositories for metadata or posters.
They are. Ive added almost 500 movies in the past couple years so Ive gotten pretty good about maintaining correct format for my media, which is why this is so troubling now that im all of a sudden having this issue.
May I see the naming & structure (parent folder), exactly as it exists, so I may attempt to replicate?
Plex
Folder: Movies
Sub-folder: Alice in Wonderland (2010)
File: Alice in Wonderland.mkv
If this refers to the top-level share that Plex creates to store its database and metadata… you should NOT store your media there. This share is hidden for a good reason (same was why there’s all those files asking not to store your media in it).
As first order of business, Please create a share to use for your media which is not the plex share.
You can make share names anything you like and you can even create one share with subfolders as long as it’s not the Plex share.
This is necessary because:
- Placing media in the Plex share
-and-
- Making any mistake whatsoever with permissions
-or- - Specifying which folder path to monitor incorrectly
will result in PMS failing. These two types of mistakes (2 & 3 above) are extremely common. In most cases, by the time it’s recognized, PMS will have “wrapped itself up into a pretzel” and be unusable which would force a full, cold, restart from scratch.
To help prevent this, I place 6 files there, all visible from FileStation or mounted drive folders, in the 6 most commonly spoken languages, to prevent media from being placed there:
Please do not place any media files here.
Bitte legen Sie hier keine Mediendateien ab.
Veuillez ne placer aucun fichier multimédia ici.
Por favor, no coloque ningún archivo multimedia aquí.
ここにメディアファイルを置かないでください。
请不要在此处放置任何媒体文件
I also have created:
Sub-folder: Alice in Wonderland (2010)
File: Alice in Wonderland (2010).mkv
There we go - fixed that for ya…

Movies in Their Own Folders
Movie files can be placed into individual folders if you want, but it’s not mandatory in most cases. If you have external media for a movie (e.g. custom poster, external subtitles etc.) you should usually place the movie in a nested folder along with the custom media files. Name the folder the same as the movie file:
/Movies/MovieName (release year)/MovieName (release year).ext
/Movies
/Avatar (2009)
Avatar (2009).mkv
/Batman Begins (2005)
Batman Begins (2005).mp4
Batman Begins (2005).eng.srt
poster.jpg
@ChuckPa That was actually extremely informative and resolved my issue. Everything is running perfectly now.
