Server Version#: 1.20.2.3402
Player Version#: Latest Samsung Client
As the subject title indicates the Skip Forward or skip Backward functionality now does not work while trying to watch media (.mp4) via PLEX on a samsung Smart TV. My God… this is unbearable and unusable.
Skipping / Seeking / Fast-Forward / Rewind behaviour has all been pretty broken in all versions of the new preview app.
I’ve been running and checking each new version as it’s released. I’m now on 5.4.1 and the issues seem to be getting worse, not better.
Aside from the FF/RW buttons on the remote no longer working like they should (and used to) - which I’ve also reported here - Remote Control Rewind/Fast Forward not working as expected, there’s also issues using the directional buttons on the remote to seek, and/or selecting the ‘dot’ on the seek bar and dragging it back/forward.
A lot of the time - with either of those approaches, when you’ve held down a button (to drag the slider along) and release it, the content just keeps playing from where it was - ignoring the command entirely. This means it’s now sometimes actually impossible to scrub/seek through a video as you’re watching it.
Exactly… what I have been doing is stopping the video and then playing again from that position. At that point, sometimes the back/forward will work for a short period.
The thing is that 2 years ago there was no sign of the issue we are currently having… it never used to be like this! Whatever was changed needs to be rectified! This is really bad!
Will try and get some logs to you soon. I have significantly improved the situation by halving the value of the “Transcoder default throttle buffer” (from default 60 to 30).
A temporary solution I have found to this is to change the quality setting after starting the file. (e.g. downgrade bit rate or resolution). After I do this I am able to FF/stop/rewind etc.

Would be nice to get a proper fix for this though.
My guess is not with this " UI version " of Plex. The problem has been reported across multiple platforms. There have been several updates to both server and client applications with plenty of fixes listed in the revision notes. But this issue is seemingly ignored
5.8.1 was just released with improvements to the player seek. Unfortunately there’s still a seeking issue somewhere on the server side, and I’m working with someone on the server team now to look into that part of the issue. Seeking should be more reliable now though.
Hi… I have just checked my Samsung TV and confirmed that it has indeed updated to ver 5.8.1.
I have performed a quick test by jumping through (at intervals) a 40min recorded tv program and can confirm that at this stage things seem to have improved. Thank you for letting us know and thank you to any of the developers who are working on this issue.
We’ve found the issue on the Plex Media Server, and will have a fix there soon. I’ll update this post and the 5.8.1 announcement post when it’s available.
That sounds promising and is good news. Further testing with 5.8.1 indicates that the problem does persist but there are times it seems better when you are watching content which is no more than say 30 minutes in length. Can’t wait for the server fix. Thanks once again.
Just to verify, when the issue does occur, does it just time out trying to buffer, or does a player error occur? If it’s the former, then the PMS fix should resolve that. If it’s the latter, then there’s another issue.
When you hit the right or left arrow on the remote control the UI displays the progress bar at the bottom of the screen and the progress (bar) indication jumps appropriately but then it jumps back to exactly where it was before ignoring any input from the user. In other words when you seek forward or back it does not actually end up jumping forward or back through the content (video) but remains playing exactly where it was before performing the seek.
Do you mind turning on log to server and attaching logs after reproducing? I don’t know if it’s the same issue but I don’t see it on my devices. Logs should show if it’s the same problem or not though.
OK… logs to follow. For now here is a very short video (shot on an iphone) of the behaviour we have been discussing on this thread.
In the video you can see that I start seeking forward (show is at 3:53 on the screen). I arrow forward until it displays “7:57” on the screen at which point I release the right arrow button on the remote. Plex simply ignores my input and reverts back to “3:30” on the screen continuing on as if I had not input anything.
Then I tried to skip back by pressing the left arrow on the remote control until the display indicated “1:32”… when I release the button the same thing occurred reverting back to “3:35” and continuing as if nothing was input via the remote.
