Get Info has no info:
Media
Part
File Batteries Not Included (1987).mkv
Size 1.68 GB
However XML does.
New movies are states as having no audio or video codec. An error of S1001 occurs when attempting to play them. Movies added months ago all play fine and have Information displayed when I click “Get Info”.
I do not have an URLs entered for “Extras”. So that’s not that issue.
I’ve received no replies from similar posts. Is this problem a mystery?
If the media info doesn’t show up I’m thinking ffprobe isn’t able to scan the file to get that info (not sure how it’s then translated to XML). Can you run ffprobe against it or get the mediainfo context tab for explorer and see if the info shows? Sounds like a corrupted file to me.
Thank you for the tip.
This problem is with ALL files, not just this one.
Regarding corruption, the files play fine with VLC. I have gone through the database corruption steps twice, so I know that’s no an issue. I have also uninstalled, reinstalled and hidden the original libraries and created a new database and library. New files are stated as not having audio or video codecs. It’s the same behavior as with the “mature” and working installation.
I agree that it’s a scanning issue, but I don’t know why. I thought reinstalling would fix it. It’s as though it’s something with the Windows OS. I’ve checked file ownership and permission so I’ve also excluded that.
I noticed your penguin avatar. I work with Linux daily in my job, After this mess I’m ready to abandon Windows and migrate to Linux.
Good eye! Yes, my server runs Ubuntu and it’s been a dream mostly.
I see that you’ve checked for db corruption already, so I won’t bother with that. What is your setup like? You’ve got PMS running on Windows, but where is the media stored and how is it connected to PMS?
My media files are on directly connected USB drives via USB 3.0. When I eventually switch to Linux, I will migrate the files to ext4 volumes across the network. I have enough drives. At some point I may shuck my externals but I haven’t seen any reason to except to clear off my desk area. The bus would be faster but there isn’t enough disk usage to worry at this point.
I’ve checked for corruption and also reinstalled with a brand new database. All movies play except for newly installed ones. I suspect something in the filesystem or OS but I can’t track it down. I already “fixed” perms and ownership several times. (In quotes because nothing needed fixing.)
Ohhh I wonder if the drives are going to sleep with Windows power settings? That’s a little out of my depth because I have never tried to run PMS using USB drives - mine are all SATA on another server and shared via the network.
So your OG movies work fine but new ones don’t? Are the OG files and new ones being placed on the same drive or different drives?
This could take some investigating to figure out where the problem is, unless someone from PMS steps in here (we’re currently just taking shots in the dark).
Thanks for your suggestions because I’m all out of ideas. The OG movies and new movies are on the same drive. Also, I’m certain the drives aren’t going to sleep because I can play the OG movies immediately after the other ones fail.
Agreed, a PMS developer would be helpful here. And yes, we are taking shots in the dark. (Reminds me of a movie! )
Edit: Amazingly, the Infuse client on Apple TV will play the new movies.
Thanks for your reply. I tried everything mentioned I could find on the internet. Which is not saying much because the “s1001” seems to be a big mystery. I gave up trying to fix the problem. I switched to Linux. No more problem.
Here’s another summary of what was happening:
No new files were being played. In the logs, all files scanned supposedly had no video or audio codec. The original problem was that after one new file wouldn’t play, I did the “Plex Dance” with it and it still wouldn’t play. I then did it with the entire library and after that, no files in the library would play. The log said none of them had a video or audio codec. When trying to play them with the webapp, I got a s1001 Network error. There was no discernable network issue because files from other libraries would play. When I tried to play a “bad movie” with the Plex Apple Client, it said it couldn’t find it. Surprising , all the files in the same library played with the Nvidia client. In all the movie pages, the resolution and audio information had disappeared and in their place was the word “Unavailable”. The correct info was in the XML! I have posted this information in Facebook and previously in the forum. There have been no replies from Plex. I found a lot of dead-end threads that asked for help with the s1001 error with no replies whatsoever. There was only one known fix that worked. That was removing the URL from the Extras setting. This was not my issue so the fix did not apply. I also “fixed” file ownership and permissions and that was of no help.
I finally gave up and switched to Linux. The problem no longer exists and Plex is faster.
Yeah, I honestly have no clue where the problem would be. I remember back when I first started my PMS on a Windows box (2012) and it would just crash after a day or two of running due to a RAM leak issue (I think), was trying PMS on Windows for a few months then switched to Linux, haven’t looked back since.
