How to configure new plex agent

Server Version#: 1.25.0.5282
Player Version#: latest
Hello,

I don’t understand how to configure laster plex agent. I’m not a total noob as I already configure my library for kodi… I now have to rename all for plex

but I don’t understand why in “TV show” agent I can see :

  • personnal media show
  • thetvdb
  • themovidatabase

and for each a lot of line greyed or not.
in thetvdb I can check themoviedatabase… I don’t understand.

also is it possible to add “imdb” ?

is there a mot famous database for french tvshow or french movies ?

thanks a lot.

Those agent settings in server settings are for old agents that will be fazed out sooner or later. If you choose to set your library as old TVDB agent then you cannot disable TVDB is why it is greyed out and you can only choose to enable secondary agent for it.

But you should use the new agents. There is nothing to configure in the agent settings when using the new agents. When you create a library and that uses the Plex Movie or Plex Tv Series agents the settings are in the Advanced settings of the library itself. So two libraries using the same agent can have different settings.

If you want your TV agent to primarily use TheTVDB then you choose that in the libraries settings.

The new agents can be configured too but this is done individually for each library (no more global agent settings that apply to all libraries).

  1. Hover over the library name in the sidebar and click > Manage Library > Edit...
  2. Switch to the Advanced tab
  3. Configure the library to your liking

thanks, after installation of old plex from synology, I did the update and I was asked to update library using new agent. yes again, and I have all these… it seems the update of agent is not perfect. is there a way to erase all agent and install new one from scratch ? to have something clean ?

Just delete that library and create a new one.

just to be sure we all speak about the same thing. currently to configure agent I’m going in :

settings => agents => then several tabs, one for each “type” of library (film, tv show, artist, etc.) and for each of these, several lines :

film =>
personnal media
local media asset (movies)
=> what does it mean ??

tv show =>
personnal media show
local media asset (tv)

etc.

is it the normal configuration or do I need to remove old things ?

is it normal to still have these settings present in plex whereas I choose to use new agent ? do I miss something ?

The server settings for old agents will not go way just because you choose the new agent for the library.

the settings for the new agent are in the individual library’s settings, not the old agent settings

ok, I did this a lot of time so I guess my library is “fresh”. then I guess also I can ignore the agent settings in settings. and only look on each library setting. right ?

library => select library => modify library => advanced and here are the settings of agent, right ?

but here I can’t see any setting to choose which database I want to use…

I have :

scanner : plex tv serie
agent : plex tv serie
order of episode : the movie database => only for order
source of classification : the movie database => only for the classification (the note)

There is nothing to choose if I want plex to use :
the movie database
imdb
tvdb
for look for a tv show…

is it normal ?

for TV select the episode order for how you have your episode named. My main TV library uses the MovieDB for it’s metadata matching. (it will use aired order if TVDB is selected) all the other settings for the agent on in that same window. The agents have never gotten data for shows from IMDB. It only uses that for search to help verify a match on tvdb or tmdb

I edited this individual show to use the TVDB DVD ordering which gets metadata from TVDB for that show. even though the rest of my library uses the library default

so “episode ordering” mean which database is used o metadata matching ? not only for the ordering. right.

aired ? what does it mean ?

I have default configuration I don’t change anything and I have strange results.

Here is my files (for testing) :

volume1/media_plex/video/TV$ ls -LR
.:
séries

./séries:
divx mp4

season 04

./séries/divx/oui-oui du pays des jouets (1998)/season 04:
oui-oui du pays des jouets S04.E02 [5 episodes].avi

./séries/mp4:

In brief, only 3 tv show :
Charlotte aux fraises (2003)
Jacques Chirac du jeune loup au vieux lion (2006)
oui-oui du pays des jouets (1998)

In plex I have :
Charlotte aux fraises (2003) => season 1
Jacques Chirac du jeune loup au vieux lion (2006) => season 1
=> OK perfect

but this one don’t appear :
oui-oui du pays des jouets (1998)

this last one is added as season 4 of Charlotte aux fraises (that has already its season 01 that is correctly displayed on plex).

I don’t understand why and if it is possible to have log that would explain this strange behavior…

It means the order that it was originally broadcast on tv.

According the TVDB database in French that show (the 1998 version) is called Oui-Oui
https://thetvdb.com/series/noddy

Hello, I corrected the date : 1992 instead of 1998.

but then, same problem.

As if something was stuck. I rescan the library and refresh metadata without success. is it needed to delete the library completely each time to perform a clean refresh ?

how to know if the agent will look in :

https://thetvdb.com

or

https://www.themoviedb.org

database ?

in library conf, each time a database can be choosen, tmdb is displayed (order and rating), I guess only tmdb will be look by the agent.

deleted and recreated : same problem…

it is as painful as with kodi  is there debug message that may help ?

From experience I would say things will be much smoother and easier once you figure out how to properly prepare your media (specifically the naming / folder organization part).

Based on BigWheel’s feedback… did you not only fix the release year but also the actual show name (e.g. to avoid it being mismatched with some other shows)?

The following structure should be working:

séries
divx <- folder linked to your tv-show library
    Oui-Oui (1998)
      Season 01
        Oui-Oui (1998) - s01e01.ext
        Oui-Oui (1998) - s01e02.ext

Where .ext is a placeholder for your actual file extensions.

If the show has a hard time to be matched you could include a reference to the ID of the show in its folder, e.g.

Oui-Oui (1998) {tvdb-76491} <- ID from TheTVDb.com
Oui-Oui (1998) {tmdb-67448} <- ID from The Movie Database
Oui-Oui (1998) {tt0199253} <- ID from IMDb (no "imdb-" prefix needed)

For any naming fixes to take effect, you might need to do a Plex Dance (silly name, but very helpful procedure). Plex remembers files by a number of characteristics, not just the name… so if the files have been mismatched and you fix the names, Plex might stick with the old match to “protect you” from accidentally mixing things up.
The Plex Dance consists of (1) moving the files out of the series folder, (2) scanning your library, (3) emptying the library trash / cleaning the server bundles, (4) returning the files to their target folder/naming and finally (5) scanning the library ones more.

If fixing the names doesn’t show those files at all… what type of files are those missing Oui-Oui episodes? Plex will ignore certain formats it doesn’t support (e.g. ISO disc images).

thanks for all advices and the “plex dance”… strange that it is needed and there is not a clean reset. i needed to do it also for kodi.

do you think that have tv show in two separate folders may be a problem (divx and mp4) ?

HEllo,

I found the problem… it was because of my subfolders “'divx” and “mp4”… plex don’t support it correctly. I really need to have all tv show inside the tvshow folder without subdirectories. (or I can add them separately in same library).

by the way plex dance works correctly with folder name modification in library configuration instead of file moving.

thanks a lot all !

Correct… you can point your library to those subfolders (divx, mp4) in order to avoid “extra layers” from Plex’ perspective. If you do, make sure not to point the library to their parent folder AND those subfolders
