how to download subtitles.

my PMS runs on a Raspberry Pi. and as long as transcoding is not required, all is well.
with the correct settings PMS can also find and download subtitles. but this does not always go nice and easy.

so, what is the correct way to do this ??

so far, I have the following solution:
when subs are not downloaded, I move all media away from the PMS-media-folder.
next, I do Clean Bundles, Optimize Database and Update Database.
after this, PMS tells me, that my dashboard is empty, which is correct.
finally, I move the folder with media-files, where subs are missing, back into the PMS-media-folder.
and before you know it, within 5 minutes, all subs are present.

I’m sure there must be an easier way.
any suggestions ??

Refresh the item. Sometimes a re-Analysis will work as well.

before I resort to my present solution, I always do Refresh All, Analyze ans Update Library.
but this usually does not have any effect.

Refresh All is not a good universal healing approach. It puts a tremendous load on both your Plex server and the metadata servers.
I was talking about Refreshing single items.

Another possibility:
Affected items may have been matched in the past with a different metadata agent, which has no ‘Local Media Assets’ (LMA) activated. (Perhaps you changed the default agent for your movie library at one point in the past?)
By performing the above mentioned procedure, commonly referred to as the Plex Dance, your items get matched afterwards with the current library default agent, which may be a different agent and which may have LMA activated.

Look into your agent configuration
and make sure that LMA is active under each agent in
Settings - Server - Agents - Movies
and
Settings - Server - Agents - Shows

The LMA is necessary to recognise and use external subtitles (among other things).

ok, I understand about Refresh All.
what I called my solution, is what you call Plex Dance
the way I use PMS is, that I download series and place them within reach of PMS.
so, a possible change of an agent would not apply.
as far as I can see, LMA is correctly activated.
currently I am struggling with a serie, where 11 out of 24 subs are not dowloaded.

Do you actually mean ‘download’ or do you mean ‘the subtitle file is present, but doesn’t get recognised by Plex’?

I do mean “download”.
once any external subs are downloaded, they will be present inside PMS.
in this case there are 24 media-files, 13 have external subs and 11 remain without.

Have you tried SubZero?

in Server - Shows - The Movie Database I have Sub-Zero Subtitles (TV, 1.4.22.908) as the first agent.
in Server - Shows - TheTVDB I have OpenSubTitles.org as first agent and Sub-Zero as second.
when I look at “Get Info” of a file without subtitle, it shows Codec SRT and Language Nederlands. this indicates the settings are correct.

in the meantime, I have done a single refresh of some files without subs. but this did not help at all.

Since SubZero fetches subs from opensubtitles as well, I’d disable the opensubtitles.org agent.
For follow up questions, I’d refer to the support thread of SubZero.
https://forums.plex.tv/discussion/186575/release-sub-zero-1-4-23-920-subtitles-done-right/p1#top

It is possible you are running into some anti-leech restrictions when you try to fetch subs for complete series at once.

I disabled the opensubtitle.org agent.
I know there are restrictions for fetching subs.
the previous series of 24 subs came in all together, after a Plex Dance.

summary:
I downloaded 24 episodes of a TV-series and placed 8 files within reach of PMS.
no subs were dowloaded.
about 12 hours later I added another 8 files. again no subs.
next day I added the last 8 files, but still no subs.
after doing Refresh All, etc.etc., no subs were downloaded.
next, I did a full Plex Dance, which resulted in 11 out of 24 subs.
for the missing subs I did individual refresh, without any success.
next morning, the missing subs were in place.

currently downloading another 24 episodes.
we’ll see how that turns out

all 24 episodes have been downloaded.
per day, I have place 8 media files within reach of PMS
and after 10-12 hours the subs were downloaded.
all’s well, that ends well

I always download subtitles from Subscene and OpenSubtitles. They are easy and fast. Next time, you can try these two sites.
