How to edit or correct "Artist Genres"

Server Version#: 4.69.1
Player Version#: Plexamp 4.4.0 and Plexweb player

Hello.

My Plex server runs on Synology Nas, accessed through a Mac… most of my music playing happens on an iPhone running Plexamp… but quite a bit does still happen on the web player.

I have an issue where Plex has decided that certain artists within my “Jazz” genre also have an “Artist Genre” that is Jazz with a space after. So when I search by “Artist Genre” I have Jazz and a secondary one called Jazz_ (let the underscore represent the space).

What this does is create a situation that when I search by Artist Genre, those artists who belong to the one with the space don’t show up.

Question here for the forums is:
How do I edit or correct an “Artist Genre” to get rid of or fix this extra, unnecessary category?

Really appreciate anyone who can help out.
Peace

Hello,

What I would do is select all the albums (or Artists) with “Jazz_” and bulk edit them with the pencil. When you “lock” the genre label “Jazz” the label can not be changed anymore by Plex.

Editing the genre within Plex would solve the problem, but it’s probably the least “permanent” method. If you ever have to rebuild the library, or the album is removed from the library and re-added, your manual changes will have to be re-done.

Plex is finding the “Jazz_” genre associated with some of the your files. Where the problem lies, and how to fix it, depends on how Plex is configured, and where the bad tag exists.

If your music library is configured to prefer local metadata, chances are that at least one of the music files (for each Artist that exhibits the problem) on your server has an embedded “Jazz_” tag. You can use whatever tagging app you use to correct this.

If “Prefer local metadata” is not enabled, the problem may exist in the online database where Plex found it. Plex queries the MusicBrainz database, but MB’s database is pretty weak on genres. They may be gathering the info from Last.FM, or some other source. That will make finding the source of the bad tag difficult. The solution that jamesray mentioned might be the simplest, in this case.

Exactly my thinking. I opened all the files in question in 3 different metadata editors. I could not find any data presenting that Jazz_ genre. I pulled the folders out of my library, and then re-added them. Now the Jazz_ is gone. No idea where it came from to begin with. I do have all my settings to prefer local metadata, and 99.9% of the time, it works just fine. Now if I could just get Plex to recognize tags like every other music player like “Composer” or “Conductor,” or be able to search by media type (FLAC, MP3, DSD etc…). Plex is certainly THE best player that does any kind of remote access music (and I do have Roon which just introduced it’s new “Arc” that allows for mobile music). It will be awesome, but has a long way to go in the UI and features dept. Thanks for chiming in. I appreciate the feedback.

Yeah, that’s one we’re all waiting for.
