Not sure there is a more appropriate category… I just recorded a few TV shows and went to play them back and there is a running commentary in the background (someone says: car pulls up, door opens, shots are fired… etc) in addition to the show’s dialog. Must be an additional audio track for the disabled or something. The first question is why is this the default?? And the next is how do I get rid of this? I don’t see anyplace to specify which audio tracks to record or play, nor do I see any place to turn commentary off in the player. What the… Help.
Client are you using for playback? Sounds like “audio description” is enabled for some reason.
I have the same issue with the Roku player. It only uses the “audio description” audio and I have no idea how to change it.
This talks about Netflix but would be worth trying in Plex, see if this will let you turn it OFF.
To turn on audio description on Roku , start playing the audio-description -enabled video in Netflix, press the down arrow on your Roku remote twice to highlight the Audio & Subtitles selection, and press OK on your remote. Select the option for Audio Description and press OK again.
I am using the native Samsung client on my Samsung smart TV with Internet apps. It isn’t the latest and greatest TV but I did uninstall the Plex app and then reinstalled it to make sure it is up to date. Kind of funny, the comment voice once in awhile says that if you don’t want the commentary disable SAP on your device. I see no way to do that on the Plex App nor on the TV in its audio menu. This is driving me nuts.
Funny, I never had this issue when I was recording with Microsoft Media Center as my DVR in previous years but now it happens that I have a Plex Pass and have switched over to Plex DVR.
There are some other oddities. The recordings start playing in Espanol on the menu but are still English? I switch it to English and no difference. Also sometimes if I stop the playback it is screwy restarting. The app asks to restart at the correct time mark, like 46 minutes but then starts replaying at 33 minutes. And fast forward doesn’t work. The FF controls pop up and say 2x, 4x, 8x, etc… but the playback continues at normal speed. I am starting to regret my Plex Pass.
Is there a setting in the Plex DVR to simply omit the audio description from the recording?
In my Samsung Plex Player if I go to the audio menu the selections for audio stream and subtitles are non functional.
There is no way to change it. Roku UNO is broken 'cause no matter what you do - apart from muxing out the offending second audio track (or muxing the MP4 to MKV) - Roku UNO plays the second track in an MP4 with multiple tracks! Period! The End! You can’t change tracks. AT ALL!
5 Days - and not a whisper… crickets…:
Another data point… I just tried the same episode on a newer Samsung TV upstairs and I didn’t have any of these issues and the Plex Player subtitle menu was functional. This newer TV is several years old and the downstairs one that has the issues is several years older still. The app always looked different between the two and maybe that one TV is just too old to run the latest Plex Player version reliably? But this TV is in my cycling workout room and that is where I really need the Plex Player to work. I guess I might be in the market for a new TV. Uggghhh.
I’ve got an Ultra - is that not new enough?
UNO is Busted. On ANY Roku.
That was specifically for Roku for @jms00
I’m going to update the categories and tags of your original post and then follow up with you.
@raylo32, please post:
- the PMS version you have installed
- the Samsung model and year
- the Plex app version.
- which tuner are you using to record with Plex
No, I don’t think so.
Windows Media Center was first released in 2002; Plex, more than 15 years ago. Plex has a long way to go to even approaching WMC capabilities (and may never get there fully).
Wow, my TVs are older than I thought.
The one that has the PlexPlayer problems is:
Samsung LN46C650_USA, 2010 model
Plex App version: 1.019
I just uninstalled and then reinstalled Plex so I am guessing this is the most recent that is available for this TV.
The one that works fine is:
Samsung UN40H6350, 2014 model
Plex version 2.012
PMS version: 1.17.0.1841-d42cfa161
The Tuner is a Hauppage dual tuner card running in a Windows 10 PC.
In the past I only used MediaCenter for the recording, not the playback and Plex played everything OK… but I hadn’t used it for a good while, like the better part of a year since my MediaCenter DVR disappeared. Now using Plex DVR. No post processing or commercial removal… yet.
That’s a really old version and was not developed by Plex but by a volunteer. You can see if you can install his latest version from USB by downloading the install zip from this post: Plex for Samsung app 2.013 submitted to Samsung
It should work with your 2014 model but I have no idea if it will work with your 2010 model.
Thanks, but I am not sure these TVs allow direct app installation. Generally they get installed via the native Samsung interface that I believe fetches them from a Samsung server. I’ll look and see if I can make this work somehow on the older TV. But no need to do it on the 2014 TV since that is working fine and I can just wait for Samsung to update the app on their server.
Had a go at this… there is no way to update an individual app from a USB drive, at least that I can find. The only USB update option is to update the entire software suite that is available from the Samsung product support site. My TV already has the most recent software and firmware that is available there.
A Fire TV Stick would allow you to run the current Plex App on that 2010 Samsung TV.
That’s a good idea. At least it will get me up and running quickly for now.
I picked up a FireStick and installed it. Plex works perfectly with it. Overall the smart TV experience with it is light years better than the ancient Samsung OS. I even set up a custom activity on my Harmony to start it up… then voice control to start Plex. Should have done this before. I will also have to add one of these to my even older Samsung in the living room. So much for my excuse to upgrade TVs.
Well, I am still having an issue with the background commentary but only on some recordings?? . For whatever reason PLEX default plays these in “Espanol” audio… but it really isn’t Spanish, it just plays the stupid background commentary. I have to go into the settings for these videos and manually select the English sound track… then the background goes away. Very bizarre. Not sure why these recordings default play in Espanol in the first place and more bizarre that Espanol isn’t Spanish but English with the background yakkety yak.
