I Love Lucy descriptions wrong on tmdb, correct on tvdb, Plex only pulls the wrong one

Server Version#: Version 1.28.0.5999
Player Version#: Version 4.84.1

I Love Lucy descriptions wrong on tmdb,
correct on tvdb, Plex only pulls the wrong one from tmdb;

Example:
S02E20, the title is correct on both, “The Black Eye”
however, the description on tmdb is wrong:

on tvdb is right:
https://thetvdb.com/series/i-love-lucy/episodes/13510

I’ve removed the show and metadata, emptied trash, re-added, set episode sort order to tvdb-aired and I cannot get the correct description to load.

Why is this only taking metadata from tmdb?

The Plex metadata uses combined data from both sources. If you notice something wrong on TMDB then you should report it or submit the correction if possible.

Only stable solution to avoid TMDB garbage in TV Shows with the “new” agent:

  • Put Episode Title in TITLE MP4-Tag
  • Put Episode Text in DESCRIPTION MP4-Tag (not COMMENT)
  • Save TV Show Poster as “show.jpg” in show folder
  • Save Season Poster as “Season xx.jpg” in season folder

Unfortunately no solution at present for

  • TV Show Text
  • Season Text
  • Season Name
  • TV Show Name, if the agent even fails at that simple task (the file name is ignored, the agent knows everything much better than you do)

ofc, Local Media Assets must be enabled and preferred

Alternative: as long as it is still available use the old and working TVDB Agent to avoid this problem completely

Don’t bother trying to correct anything in TMDB. Either it is locked or they change it back and discard your data.

This is not accurate. If the data is demonstrably incorrect they will not reject corrections. Just be sure to familiarise yourself with their rules as you cannot just change things to your liking if they contravene these rules.

“Their rules” are exactly a big part of the problem. I tried on some occasions to correct false data, but changing their wrong data to the correct data from TVDB or at least cut off links via id to avoid plex picking up wrong TMDB data because of right TVDB Ids were rejected and reversed because of “their rules”.
They claim to hold the ultimate truth. So be it but without me and my data. MY data, MY rules.
ofc I can not stop anyone from wasting time with this database but at least I can advise against it.
Putting as much data as possible in the files itself and the directories solves most parts of the problem for good. Except the topics I mentioned above about Show Name etc.

If you can give me some examples of corrections you made that were rejected I’d be happy to take a look and get somebody’s attention at TMDB if we feel it was rejected in error.

Is there a how-to to use the old TVDB Agent?

Regarding the TMDB descriptions, they have the descriptions misaligned with the episodes, it’s obvious. Some are correct, then the same description is repeated on another episode. It looks like a corruption. The content is the same on TVDB, just not misaligned to the episode. Can they just re-import or whatever their process is?

Don’t remember every attempt, I gave up several months ago, but the most annoying experience I remember was trying to fix the false data about the TV show “Augsburger Puppenkiste” TVDB-123201.
Adding this show to Plex even leads to false show names. It is a pure lottery and produces show names like “Die Mumin Familie” or “LiLaLu im Schepperland” but never ever the correct show name. Data about seasons and episodes are also pure lottery.
And NO, it is not because of wrong file naming. I tried everything from the manuals, I even used filebot for some days before creating my own tool for getting metadata, naming files and writing the MP4 tags.

Simple. Go to your library settinge, change the first “Plex TV Series” to “Plex Series Scanner” and below change to “TheTVDB”, then rescan library.
You should get correct metadata now, but you lose the features of the new agent, e.g. Extras for deleted scenes or trailers. If you don’t have any of these, there is no need to use the new agent now, as long as the old and working one is still available.

Could you give me an actual example of this please ? I’m pretty active on TMDB and am willing to help fix-up what I can but would like an example of what is wrong before going in with a sledgehammer trying to fix stuff. I could make it worse

If I get some free time in the coming days I’ll take a look …

In the original post I specify an episode that has the correct description in tvdb and incorrect on tmdb. I included the links to the episodes.

Thanks

That’s already fixed I Love Lucy S2E20 (1953) - Changes — The Movie Database (TMDB) which is why I was asking.

Just that episode or all the mismatched ones?
That was one example of many. I still see others.
Can they all be reconciled to TVDB ?

Just so I understand, reporting that TMDB descriptions are mismatched is not enough, I need to do an every episode reconciliation with TVDB, report each mismatch, hope they get corrected and then they will make their way to Plex, since Plex won’t give an option to prioritize TVDB, is that right? Why does Plex lean to TMDB? Why isn’t it agnostic?

Obviously it’s better if TMDB gets fixed, but in the meantime you can just change your Library Agent to TVDB.

Fair enough. Thanks for all the responses and tips.

I know there are limited resources in this world and when there’s a workaround you should take it and move on. Moving on! Seriously, Thanks again.

Do not look at it like that. TVDB and TMDB are two different community driven databases for online content with their own rules, guidelines etc… One is not better over the other, it really depends on your point of view and where your loyalties reside. I’m on the TMDB side of that for many reasons I’ll not get into here …

Like has been said, fixing TMDB incorrect content is the way to solve this. You can create a request to have a moderator take a look but for shows which are older like this example it could be months/years before someone gets to it. The better way is to create an account and help fix it yourself or have some other like minded individual (like me) help you

So, from what you are saying there are a number of episodes across all seasons which have the correct title but the descriptions are incorrect for the episode. I’ll review that over the coming days and see if I can fix-up anything which is obviously incorrect.

I hear you, I hadn’t realized how community driven these sites were.
I actually have a login for tmdb that I forgot about.
It’s pretty easy to make edit’s, I went ahead and fixed up a batch for Season 2.
Over time I’ll check others. Not all were screwy. Thanks for the advice.

Cool, last thing then is to wait 24-72 hours for the changes to creep their way into the plex system from TMDB. Then all you need to do is force refresh the metadata on the show and all should be correct on your side.

So I jumped back to see if Season 4 needed any edits, and sure enough, it does.
However, the fields that need changing are locked, I don’t know what the fix is.

So far I found:
Episode, S04E05 Mr. and Mrs. TV Show, is missing from TMDB.

Episode S04E06 - Ricky’s Movie Offer, is incorrectly assigned S04E05.
And all subsequent S04 episodes are then off by 1.
How can those get fixed?

Update - the episode Mr. and Mrs. TV Show is there as S04E24, which should be Hollywood Anniversary.

and Hollywood Anniversary is listed as S04E23, which is actually Bull Fight Dance, which on TMDB appears as S04E22, which is actually Don Juan is shelved … I could go on …
