Incorrect episode thumbnails

I am having an issue with the episode thumbnails in Plex. Currently I am working on Cutthroat kitchen. For example, the thumbnail for S12E01 “The one with William Shatner” has a thumbnail with Antonia who is not even in that episode. I can’t figure out where in the world that thumbnail is coming from.

  • The episode title and description are correct, just the thumbnail is wrong.
  • The MKV has a cover.png embedded in it which has William Shatner, but from what I’ve read Plex only uses metadata from MP$4 files and ignores the cover.png in an MKV.
  • I have tried moving all the files of the library, scanning so it sees it is gone, emptying the trash, cleaning bundles and moving everything back. (Plex dance) and the same thumbnail still comes back
  • The thumbnail does not exist on either tmdb (which I am using) or tvdb.
  • I have tried refreshing the metadata.

Where is it getting this thumbnail and how can I fix it?

Probably from IMDb because they have the episode order completely FUBARed. The episode you’re referring to is listed as S11E09 there. Take a peek at https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2930446/episodes/?season=12&ref_=ttep and see if that’s the images you’re seeing.

My thought was that it was a plex generated thumbnail since TMDB doesn’t have any thumbnails for that season on their site. But since you say Antonia isn’t in that episode, it makes me wonder if that is the case at all.

Make do a Tiny-Eye reverse image search and see if it takes you anywhere

Ok, I managed to snip that poster and did a reverse image search. Only place it showed up was Hulu.

Well thanks for doing some looking. That is so strange. I had done some rearranging of files since what I had wasn’t in the same order as TMDB or TVDB or anything else for that matter. I feel like what happened was that the wrong episode was set as s012e01 and it scraped the random picture from whatever episode that was and now it is stuck.

And I am wrong about that. I changed the screenshot for that episode on my Plex server to one from the actual episode. I then installed a empty instance of Plex on my Windows box. I pointed it to the share, it scanned the library, and that same darn poster came back. (Anotnia in a plaid shirt looking to her right with an ice cream machine in the background).

I guess at this point it would be quicker and easier just to manually set a screenshot for each and every episode. I wish it could be set to just grab a random screenshot from the mkv file and be done with it.

For that episode, if you click on the pencil icon and click on “poster”, are there multiple posters you can select from?
