Incorrect warning that an ARMv8 update is available in server management (settings->general)

Server Version#: 1.41.1.9057
Player Version#: 1.104.0 (or web)

One of my 3 Synology servers is a tiny ARMv8 device (DS118). All 3 have the latest server v1.41.1.9057 installed, but the Plex clients (macOS and web) are reporting that “an update is available” for the ARM server (server Settings->General). Interestingly, the “Activity” button correctly shows that all 3 servers are up-to-date.

I clicked the link to plex.tv and re-downloaded the latest ARMv8 server but it makes no difference (because I already had the latest download installed).

BACKGROUND: I found at the same time that the ARM server was no longer claimable by me, for reasons unknown (but probably from file corruption due to a recent power dropout/spike that bricked the modem-router next to the NAS), and I had to run the 3rd-party shell script “plex-claim-server.sh” to get my server back.

Can anyone please suggest a fix? I strongly suspect a file corruption issue; I really don’t want to totally wipe my installation and start again.

Thanks for any help. M.

Is your server claimed?

Point a browser at the IP address of the NAS: https://syno_ip_address:32400/identity (ex: https://10.1.2.3:32400/identity). You’ll see a line of XML with claimed="0" or claimed="1". 0 = unclaimed, 1 = claimed.

If it is not claimed, then you will see the Update Available message.

If it is claimed, check the Server Update Channel setting (Settings → Server_Name → General). Ensure it is set to Public, not Beta, as you are running the current public release.

Regarding server claiming…

Many server claiming issues are networking problems. The server must be able to communicate with hosts at plex.tv for the process to work. If unable to claim, check the network basics such as IP address & mask and default gateway. Using a public, vs ISP, DNS server can also help sometimes. Try 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare), 8.8.8.8/8.8.4.4 (Google), or 9.9.9.9 (Quad9).

Also, verify the time is correctly set on the NAS. If the time is incorrect, claiming may not work. Sync the NAS with a public NTP server to ensure time is correctly set: DSM Control Panel → Regional Options → Synchronize with NTP server.

If running DSM 7, claiming the server is easily accomplished by uninstalling/re-installing Plex Media Server (i.e. no need to use SSH & claiming script). See Synology FAQ 31: Reset / Reclaim PMS on DSM 7 (Not Authorized - Locked Out).

Regarding DSM 7.2.2+…

Updating from previous DSM 7 version: DSM 7.2.2 forced a packaging change for Plex. You’ll need to install the DSM 7.2.2 specific package after updating DSM. See Synology FAQ 34: Upgrading Plex to DSM 7.2.2+.

Updating from DSM 6: Several steps required. Follow the FAQ to avoid headaches. If the process goes sideways, don’t panic and wipe everything. It is usually possible to recover from a failed migration. Synology FAQ 27 - Migrating an existing PMS from DSM 6 to DSM 7.

Thank you very much for your comprehensive reply. I worked through all your checkpoints, with these results:

  1. Doing the “identity” check shows that the server is “claimed” and has the latest version of Plex Media Server (version="1.41.1.9057-af5eaea7a).

  2. The Server Update Channel remains set to “Public”.

  3. Synology DSM was/is set to use Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4). It was using Google NTP but I changed to pool.ntp.org (but both work and the time was always correct). Furthermore, it was/is connected to the Synology DynDNS service and was/is accessible globally. Bizarrely, if I change the primary DNS to CloudFlare (1.1.1.1) then the Synology DynDNS stops working and an error message pops up telling me to use 8.8.8.8!

  4. I have been using the correct Plex server version for DSM 7.2.2+

  5. The interesting thing is that claiming the server by re-installing and hitting the “CLAIM” button on the management page did not work last night. Furthermore, when I ran the claim shell script via SSH it failed because it could not resolve the FQDN “plex.tv” to an IP address. I got the script working only by adding an IP address for plex.tv to /etc/hosts.

I’m guessing now that there is some issue with Synology DSM on this particular machine, and I’m wondering if I should just tear it down to bare metal and rebuild it from backups ( I realise this isn’t a Synology forum however

Note that the server works otherwise (I can play my media).

[UPDATE: I tried “un-claiming” the server; now I can’t claim it back again - just as I couldn’t last night]

Thanks once again for your help. Can you suggest any further troubleshooting hints?

[UPDATE] Once again I uninstalled Plex Media Server (un-claiming option). Again I installed with a fresh claim token from Plex - failed. I then went in to the Synology NAS via SSH and added an IP address for “plex.tv” to /etc/hosts. Now it installs OK, and I no longer get the server version update warning.
