Since one of the last updates, Plex (currently 8.39) does not play downloaded content on my iPad (iOS 17.6.1) anymore. Also previously downloaded and watched content is not played back anymore.

Unfortunately discovered the same issue… on vacation… without access to my local Plex Server… thank you. ![]()
iPadOS: v. 17.6.1
Player: v. 8.39
Server: v. 1.40.5.8921
I’ve found that old downloads (from a week or so ago, probably from earlier versions of the app) do not play, but newly-downloaded videos play.
Deleting old downloads from the iPad and then re-downloading them allows them to play.
Great way of treating users… one step closer to switch to Jellyfin.
Thank you @Thesaurus. I‘ll test this after I am back at home.
Player v. 8.39.1 (updated from 8.39) for iPadOS
Old downloads still won’t play. Did the previous version of the player delete these files from the iPad without removing their entries from the list of downloads?
I can easily delete the entries and re-download them, but my concern is that the original files might still be on the iPad in a ghost directory, unusable but forever taking up space.
I tried an experiment using v. 8.39. I deleted a large file that would not play, and I did not re-download it. My iPad’s settings reported approximately the same amount of storage in use before and after the deletion (including when I checked hours after the deletion). There was a small change, but not enough to account for the full size of the large file. This is why I wonder whether the old downloads had already been deleted by mistake by 8.39 or whether they are still there on the iPad after I manually delete them from the app.
Hey y’all, so there was definitely a bug in 8.39 where it looks like downloaded files were deleted but the metadata was not. Which is why you would still see the download in your list but when you would go to play, it wouldn’t work.
So yes if you updated or were auto-updated to 8.39, your downloads are most likely deleted and you’ll need to redownload them.
8.39.1 does fix this issue but we couldn’t automatically find and re-download files without a larger rewrite which would have taken longer than pushing out this hotfix.
If your file size doesn’t update properly after re-downloading, let me know because that sounds like it could be a related issue and just showing the wrong value.
Thank you very much, @Craig_Holliday, for clarifying the issue. Everything is working as expected now, including the storage figure updating properly after re-downloading files.
Thank you very much to the Plex team for quickly fixing this bug.
