Is there a limit on number of files or folders?

Server Version#: 1.22.3.4523
Player Version#:

So, I’m trying to add a folder that has my 4K movies in it. I moved them onto a NVMe drive because it seems to get rid of buffering issues. Seems to be all OK in adding and updating the movie library, except I don’t see the titles within plex movie database. Nothing.
Never had this before.
I’ve got 616 movie entries. Is that some sort of problem?
Is the NVMe drive a problem?

616 movies is certainly not an issue from my experience even on a Nvidia shield. You may need to move the Plex server storage to an external device as the metadata can grow quickly (in my case approx. 200GB atm)

As for an actual limit, wait to see if there is an official response from Plex.

I did notice a performance decrease when navigating through the menu after adding 6TB worth of music but ended up wiping the shield and adding the music gradually in the hope the database was corrupted or similar, now I am up to “D” and so far haven’t seen much of a performance decrese.

I also suggest using the optimise database and clean bundles features if not automatic in your scheduled tasks.

Well the amount of movies isn’t the problem because someone on Reddit was bragging recently about hitting the 6,000 milestone for his movies library.

Are all the movies in your 4K folder in subfolders for each movie’s name? What operating system is Plex Server running on?

Yes, each movie in it’s own folder, just like all the others as well.
I’m running win10 pro

Have you checked if they’ve been merged with some existing media in your library and therefore not showing up on their own?
You should be able to filter your library for duplicates to identify such files – the Info tab available when editing such an item will show what actual files are associated to it.

Yes, but my issue is that the movie isn’t showing up within Plex. I can’t find it For example, Groundhog Day I have in 1080p. I just d/l a 4k version which is on the disk drive in question. After configuring the folder within the movies library, I look for Groundhog Day and still only see the 1080 version. Clicking on info doesn’t show any other file versions.
Where is it?
Further, there a number of movies on the drive that I can’t find at all. Just not there. No error messages, no warnings…nothing.

But you’re not adding those movie folders individually to your library, are you?
Would you mind sharing how those folders/files are organized and which of them are assigned as library folders to your library?

Thanks people for your continued help here.

No, not individual. In my setup, I have multiple drives. The drive in question is “AV 5 NVMe (H)”. Because I don’t need any subfolders underneath that, the 4k movies in question are all just under that, but, they are all in their own folders. Eg: Groundhog Day is H:\Groundhog.Day.1993.UHD.BluRay.2160p.TrueHD.Atmos.7.1.HEVC.REMUX-FraMeSToR-4P.

and so on. So, I added “H” to the library, but no movies or titles. I tried just adding a single movie, but it didn’t show up either. Of course, it doesn’t let you add files, just folders.

I believe I’ve read about Plex could experience some issues if you have your folders on the drive level. Does this issue persist if you include a library folder and add that to your library instead (e.g. H:\Movies\ instead of H:\).

PS: all of the above is turning a blind eye on the folder name itself… why are you not simply going with the basic naming (e.g. Groundhog Day (1993))?

lol, it’s the way it comes off of Usenet. Too lazy to rename. Besides, it’s never been an issue before. All, or almost all of my movies are like that.

So, I created a folder called H:\Movies 4k and moved the movies over to it. Added H:\Movies 4k to my library, but still didn’t seem to populate my database.

Also, because I’ve so many 4k movies now, I can’t have all of them on the new drives, no room. The ones that are mixed in with all the other movies (alphabetically over several drives of mixed resolutions), show up normally. ie: it’s ok with listing 4k movies, just not on my “new” drive.

I use nvme drives for 4k because I found that using the faster drives seemed to get rid of buffering which was being intolerable when using old platter drives.

Can you perform a Plex Dance with one of the movies (Groundhog Day?) and share the server log files after completing this? This should show if/where the files get added/matched (or why they’re ignored).

So here comes something outta left field.
I was noticing that downloads were, once again, being extremely slow for my fibre connection plus I was having increasing numbers of BSOD’s with various modules being reported as culprits from WhoCrashed.
Last time this was occurring I checked properties on IVp4 on my ethernet adapter and discovered a new and different DNS server address was being used. When corrected back to check box of “Choose DNS server automatically”, everything corrected. Movies are now being shown and reported.
I’ve no idea why a different DNS server address would affect Plex like that, but it seems so. Further I’ve no idea who or what is causing my server to change “spontaneously”. I’ve no experience or expertise to know if this represents some kind of outside attempt at being attacked or is it a rogue program or app or what.

You should get Filebot. Makes life so much easier an eliminates sloppy names as one of the potential issues when these odd things happen with your library.

As for the DNS issue, it’s always possible a Microsoft update changed your settings accidentally. Although it would be interesting to see which DNS server it was set to and trace back the operator…

Thanks for all your help!
Greatly appreciated!
