I have a couple of TV series that the Plex TV agent doesn’t recognize. I’ve checked them against TVDB and TMDB and the names conform. Is there a way to look up the series names in the Plex TV scanner’s database?
One of the series names might be tricky. It’s “Sue Thomas: F.B. Eye”. Even so, the Scanner should offer me anything starting with Sue Thomas, shouldn’t it?
As a last resort, I’ll try feeding it the TMDB id instead of the name.
Tom - Thanks for the link to the PlexDB. After you sent it, the Plex TV Scanner identified it without further input from me; but only on one of my Plex servers. So I removed the folder from my NAS, edited the metadata so that the name was exactly as displayed in the link you sent, rescanned my TV libraries, and emptied the trash. Then I added the folder back to my NAS and rescanned my TV libraries. None of them identify the series and none of them even let me match, fix match, or unmatch. (Those options don’t show up.)
Insert - I have another series, The Three Stooges, that Plex can’t match. Like the other one, it’s clearly in the Plex TV DB. I have verified the metadata, but the Plex Scanner only offers me The Three Musketeers and The Three Bears. So I tried your suggestion and made a .plexmatch file. But it didn’t make a difference. Maybe I did it wrong?
Still no joy for The Three Stooges. I checked the settings as you described and that’s how they are already. What’s really bizarre is that when I click to MATCH and type THE THREE STOOGES and delete the date, I only get The Three Musketeers and The Three Bears. Can someone else see if they can get The Three Stooges as an option?
For the other issue, of the MATCH options not showing, you were right. Thank you. I had to go into the library and try from there.
So here’s the current state of Sue Thomas: F.B.Eye. She doesn’t automatically identify on any of my servers, but she does show up if select MATCH. I don’t have to do anything else. She’s at the top of the list. Why it’s not automatic, I’d love to know, but I’ll take it.
I think it’s something to do with all the periods in that name
You see how the unmatched version shows up
I can get it to match straight away if I input the tvdb id number directly into the folder name
Sue Thomas F.B.Eye (2002) {tvdb-78849}
Ok so, this makes perfect sense. I can’t match The Three Stooges (1934) when I add it to the library, but I can pick any other random show in that same library and “fix match” it.
Again, it matches straightaway if you add the tvdb id
The Three Stooges (1934) {tvdb-79173}
I think the trouble with „The Three Stooges“ is that they’re listed as different media types in the different repositories used by Plex to obtain their metadata:
TheTVDb have listed them as a show
The Movie Database have listed them as individual movies because they initially aired as short films
I’ve seen a number of attempts to make this work. Without being able to verify this myself at the moment… what seems to work is including the TVDb ID of their show in the folder name: … {tvdb-79173} and possibly doing a Plex Dance to get Plex to use the new reference.
Two side notes:
This won’t force plex to use „only“ metadata from TVDb… it just provides a hint as for what „show“ this is and avoids matching based on TMDb.
Based on TheTVDb, the year the „show“ first aired is 1934 (despite there being an special going back to 1933)
I just tried with a dummy file and seems to match (assuming this is a series) - I only set the id
tvdbid: 79173
some series just have common keywords that tend to mess up the match results - usually if a series doesn’t match - I ensure the folder name contains the year - then if that still doesn’t work just manually match (or more recently set the .plexmatch file)
also good to check if the series is a show/film depending on the DB you are using. Not usually an issue - but it happens (as tom said)
Thank you all for your efforts and suggestions! Sue was working on 3/4 of my servers and the Stooges on 0/4. After adding the tvdids to their folder names, Sue is still working on 3/4 and the Stooges are now fine on the same 3/4. The last hold out is a Shield server, but so are 2 out of the other 3. I’ve tried rescanning and it’s clear that the Stooges change did something; it created a second Stooges entry which got more files until the first was depleted and removed. But neither Sue nor the Stooges got any meta data and neither can be matched. What in the world could be causing that? By adding the tvdid, we’re basically telling it the answer. So what would make it ignore that?
The Agent settings are the same for all the servers, as are the advanced library settings. I’ve tried removing the folders, rescanning, emptying the trash, adding back the folders and rescanning. Nada.
Again, thank you all for helping me to get the others working. While the last one is still misbehaving, it’s failure should be a big clue as to what’s going on - I hope!
