Issue with TV extras

I’m having an issue with TV extras; I have seen some other posts that seem related, but haven’t been able to find an answer in them that works for me.

Until a few days ago, I had been using the old system for organizing TV extras (dumping everything into a folder labeled Season 00, and numbering the files accordingly). Then at some point, it seems the new system got implemented, and that seemed to completely mess up the files organized that way. So I decided to try to reorganize them, using the new system. But when I try doing that, the video files just don’t seem to be accessible at all using PLEX. Some details:

I am using a synology NAS with DSM 6.2.4-25556 as my server

I watch videos on either my ipad, or using apple TV. I saw some notices that only the iOS was completely compatible with the new system, so I have been using the ipad to test things. Just to be sure I wasn’t missing an update on that, I deleted the app and redownloaded it from the app store.

My test file is an extra (a “featurette”) from Doctor Who (1963). I tried putting it in at the show level, using

/Doctor Who (1963)/Featurettes/Doctor Who (1963) - Origins.m4v

but that didn’t seem to show up. So I also tried putting it in at the season level, using

/Doctor Who (1963)/Season 01/Featurettes/Doctor Who (1963) - Origins.m4v

That didn’t seem to help. So I also tried putting it in tied to a specific episode. The first episode was

/Doctor Who (1963)/Season 01/Doctor Who (1963) - s01e01 - An Unearthly Child.m4v

so I added the file

Doctor Who (1963) - s01e01 - An Unearthly Child-featurette.m4v

but still got nothing.

I have also tried various things such as refreshing metadata, checking that the LMA was enabled, etc, following discussions here and elsewhere. But I can’t get anything to work!

Please help!

Libraries were not converted to the new “Plex TV Series” agent without user interaction. Did you change it and refresh metadata? It also still uses the same naming conventions including season 00. You can look at the GUID of a single episode of something to see if it uses the new agent. ( Get info>View XML) It will look like this if it uses the new agent.

Ok, let’s assume then that there’s two separate issues: the one that caused my extras, organized in the old method, to suddenly go haywire, and the one that is preventing me from successfully using the new agent. I want to focus on the second issue, since if I can get the new system working it would be preferable to the old one.

I checked the XML file for an episode, and it read

guid=“plex://episode/5d9c0c56d4f2a9001f80fbd7”

in the XML data, which would seem to be consistent with what you are saying means the new Media agent is working. I also confirmed that I followed the steps at

and when I edit my tv shows library, I see that both the scanner and the agent say “Plex TV Series”, which seems to agree with what the webpage says it should say, as well.

However, I still cannot find any extra, added in any of the three ways it describes being able to, on any of my devices.

What should I try next?

If you have an mkv file I would try that. Only because I am concerned that possibly embedded metadata in the m4v may be messing things up.

after adding an episode extra such as your Doctor Who (1963) - s01e01 - An Unearthly Child-featurette.mkv and refreshing metadata for that show have a look at the Plex Media Scanner Matcher.log to see if it even sees the file at all.

Ok, I tried using an MKV file, but that didn’t make anything show up. I did look in the log files. I had a hard time parsing them, but I did find the following line:

May 25, 2021 19:39:53.579 [0x7fad7f081780] DEBUG - [MI] Closing input file: “/volume1/Plex Video/TV Shows/Doctor Who (1963)/Season 01/Doctor Who (1963) - An Unearthly Child-other.mkv”

in the file

Plex Media Scanner Analysis.log

which is, at least, a reference to an “extra” file that I added.

What next?

this needs to be the same as the episode files with the s01e01

/volume1/Plex Video/TV Shows/Doctor Who (1963)/Season 01/Doctor Who (1963) - s01e01- An Unearthly Child-other.mkv”

Ok, I fixed that (and did the plex dance), but still nothing (all of my previous attempts with the extras had used the correct file name, I just messed it up on the most recent test). I also noticed that it said there was an update available for the server, and I did that (which didn’t help.)

wait, never mind. I also forgot in the most recent test to use my ipad to check whether or not things were there, and not trust the web app. I think I now have it sorted out; at least the two “extras” I’m using to test things are now showing up!

I suspect the key fix, in my case at least, was converting to MKV format.

Thanks!
