Keepalive option to prevent ROKU from killing PLEX process during screensaver

I have found recently that my ROKU will close the PLEX app after the PLEX screensaver has been engaged for an hour.

I would prefer the PLEX app continue to run and not have the ROKU interfere, presumably with some sort of keepalive function in the PLEX app.

More details in my original post: Plex on Roku - Exits (crashes) about 1 hour after screensaver starts

Sorry to inform you but I do not think this is under Plex’s control at all. I also believe that it is against the developer’s agreement to even try. So far I have not run into even one app that does not exit after idle for a period of time.

This feature is a major reason why I stopped trying to use Plex or Emby or any other app to try to play audiobooks using my Rokus. Audiobook often need to be paused for extended periods of time and they do not need to remain hooked to a display. When the app exits it requires a number of presses just to resume the playback and you also need a visual display to navigate to the item to resume.

I wish Plex could and would do this but I very much doubt it can be done. I will vote for this in spite of the apparent hopeless nature of the request.

Hey, I was noticing this behavior after a couple of recent updates to the roku ultra, after digging around I found that the roku’s Bandwidth Saver setting had been enabled (not by me) which automatically closes apps after a period of time – never consistently, usually during screen saver, sometimes during binge watching… i thought the plex app was just crashing.

I disabled the bandwidth saver option on the roku ( Settings > Network > Bandwidth Saver > [On/Off] ) and haven’t had the problem since.

At first i thought it just exits the apps (including other streaming services) but it seems to just put them to sleep and go back to the home screen.

Hope this helps!

this is a GREAT tip (and i went ahead and updated my settings) but sadly, this did not change the reported behavior.

all of my data is based on PLEX screensaver start. it’s consistently close to an hour. i have not done any extensive test about whether or not i’ve used the remote. i don’t have auto-play or any playlists so remote interaction is still required between episodes and/or movies.

I am commenting in here to say that I am experiencing the same issues and am looking for a solution. Hopefully this gains some traction.

This only started happening in the last week.

Toggling the Roku’s “Bandwidth Saver” Option does nothing.

Plex Server 4.43.4
Version 1.21.0.3616
Roku 3 4200x
Software 9.4.0 build 4190-04

This is not something we have any control over. If it only started recently then likely due to with the Roku 9.4.0 update
