LG Smart TV App - "Server certificate cannot be trusted" SOLVED

Server Version#: 1.23.4.4805
For the last number of days, I have been unable to open the Plex app on my LG TV. I can still access my server from all other sources, but the app on the TV is non-functional. There have been no recent updates prior to this problem.

Steps I have taken so far:
Rebooted all network routers/modems
Rebooted Plex server PC
Factory reset LG TV and reinstalled Plex app
Used both DHPC and manual IP settings on LG TV

I get the same error message every time
Error code: -202
UNABLE TO LOAD
Server certificate cannot be trusted
Please contact content provider

Can anyone help me?

What model number of LG is that. Do you know what version of webOS it runs?

The model is SK9000PUA and it’s running version 5.30.15. I have confirmed that there are no updates available either for the TV or the Plex app.

When you re-installed the app on the TV and launched it, did you see the sign in page with “Go to plex.tv/link and enter this code”? Were you able to sign in and authorize the TV to access your account?

When do you see the error code? When launching the app, when trying to stream something from your server, or at some other point? If the app runs, can you access settings?

Does the TV appear in your list of Authorized Devices? If so, what version of the Plex client is listed? It should be the most recent, 5.19.1, since you recently re-installed, but never hurts to double check.

After reinstalling, I don’t even get to a sign-in page. It shows the Plex logo, then just shows the error screen. The app simply refuses to run on this TV now. The TV was in my list of authorized devices, as a trouble-shooting step, I removed it to force a “relink”, but it made no difference. The app won’t even get that far before the certificate error shuts it down.

Thanks for that info.

I’m guessing the server certificate is from a LG or Plex host that the app checks with when launched (to check for updates, authorize the device, etc).

It would not be a certificate from your Plex Media Server, since you receive the error message before the app fully loads.

Give this a try:

  1. Turn off IPv6 in the TV settings.
  2. Set the TV to use a public DNS such as 8.8.8.8 (Google) or 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare).
  3. Turn off the TV, then remove it from power (pull the plug) for ~1 minute.
  4. Restore power, turn on the TV, and try to launch the app.

Reasons for suggestion:
a) Plex does not fully support IPv6 (should not matter, but eliminates a variable).
b) ISP’s DNS sometimes have problems resolving plex.tv hosts (rare, but it happens).
c) Turning off the TV just puts it to sleep. Pulling the plug completely flushes the system, forcing the TV to completely reload the Plex (or any) app when launched. The one minute wait ensures any power stored in the TV fully drains (power supply capacitors take a few seconds to fully drain).

I do not know if the above will resolve the problem. I’ve an LG B7 OLED. I’ve do not remember ever seeing the -202 error. On occasion the Plex app has failed to launch after an update (usually when I was running a beta release). The sequence above fixed things.

I’ve already turned off IPv6 and used 1.1.1.1 as a DNS, neither of those has made any difference. I will try that in combination with unplugging the TV when I get home and see if it makes a difference. It’s getting super frustrating as we all love using Plex and feel totally crippled when it doesn’t work LOL

Can you check that the system time/date on the TV is correct. We have tried to repro on WebOS4 Tv and cannot figure out why it would be giving error.

Still no success… did another factory reset, unplugged the TV for over a minute , manually set IP address using 8.8.8.8 as the DNS, confirmed date and time are all correct. Tried connecting over WiFi and hardline, no difference. The Plex app that is available on the LG store is version 5.0.1

Also, I tried using the web browser to go to http://plex.tv
The page loads but when I click on sign in, I get the account sign in coming up and then it says “This webpage not available”… Any thoughts or ideas?

Can you stream from other TV apps - Netflix/Amazon/etc.?

What is the network like? Just an ISP modem/router or do you have your own firewall, router, etc.?

Any VPN between the TV and the Internet (ex: running a VPN on your router)?

TBH, I’m out of ideas. You’ve done everything that normally fixes TV related issues.

Something seems to be blocking communication between the TV and LG and/or Plex hosts, but dang if I know what something is.

If the problem was at LG/Plex, it would seemingly affect all LG devices and the forum would be full of similar posts.

If the problem was with your network, it would seemingly affect all your devices, not just the LG TV.

All other services work without issue, it’s just the Plex app that refuses to load. The network is simple, the TV is hardwire connected to the ISP modem/router, no VPN in between them.

Oddly enough, I wasn’t able to sign into Plex.tv from the browser on my desktop PC either. I then turned ON the VPN on that machine, and then it worked. I am usually able to sort these things out, but I’m also at a loss as to what could be causing the problem. I may have to start simple and remove everything else from the network and see if there’s something interfering somehow.

Are you using a Split Tunnel feature from your VPN providor?

Not likely because I don’t even know what that is :stuck_out_tongue:

If you have a Shaw WiFi router then turn off protected browsing. Shaw has for some reason added this Plex network activity it’s blocked list.
Go to Shaw Bluecurve app and disable protected browsing.
I had the exact same issue and this resolved it.

THANK YOU! This is exactly it! I was convinced the problem was down to the modem, but given how locked down they are, there are only a few things to check. I hadn’t yet gotten to that setting. You are a sanity saver my friend, I owe you!

@assenheim56 Good catch!

Do you know if Shaw protected browsing affects all Plex clients or just LG TVs? Does it block remote access on port TCP/32400?

It would be good to document this for other users, so wondering how much Shaw blocks.

Example: Xfinity xFi Advanced Security blocks Plex remote access. The details are in the Troubleshooting Remote Access document.

It would be nice to have something similar for Shaw protected browsing.

In my case, it also affected the login from my PC via the webpage. I tried to login to Plex.tv and it just would show “webpage unavailable”. However, the Plex app on my PC and the Xbox One, kept working regardless if “protected browsing” was on or not.

Gave this a go thanks for the support brother. mine sadly was disabled already. still having the same issue. with Shaw.
