Plex control the encoder and could strip out extraneous subtitles from the video presented to the TV.
It’s pretty easy to do it with ffmpeg that is used by Plex for transcoding.
All they’d need to add is a tick box in the app on the lg asking for a “maximum compatibility” stream, and build in a low effort transcode profile (something that just strips unneeded subtitles streams).
That’s if it really is that causing the issues.
Personally on my G4 I just changed the privacy setting and withdrew my acceptance of the “monitor what I’m watching” terms and conditions entry.
It gives you a scary message saying it might affect your ability to play apps and it’s going to reboot now and omg scary!
As long as you leave the normal terms and maybe 1 or 2 other options ticked you’ll be fine.
Fingers crossed this will solve it, but we’ll see.
Either way, saying it’s a curation problem when it is a known compatibility issue with the client and solvable as simply as stripping extraneous streams from a playback is kinda funny. It’s not like stripping sub streams is computationally intensive.
I can confirm clearing the subtitles tracks to just a couple (English and English Forced) fixes the problem for my LG G4. I did this using mkvmerge in a similar way used in ChuckPa’s CleanMovie script.
It would be great is Plex could resolve this. Seems to be happening more often.
This started to happen to me too after the WebOS upgrade I got recently. Also, only on high bitrate content.
Never had any issues before that OS upgrade. My first thought is that the new WebOS takes up way too much ram with all the new bullshit they introduced.
I have the same problem on my brand new LG C5. It looks like the Plex app is creating a huge buffer during playing, in my case 30 min+ until RAM is full and WebOS will restart the Plex.
This started happening more recently and I have only really noticed it on my LGC5 OLED. Wired or wireless. Get the restarting ram message. Super frustrating. I have had oleds for years and still do without this problem. Every couple second skips 30 min at best for app to not crash and restart.
Same issues where Plex just stops and reboots! Have a LG G4 83”. After latest OS update, Plex has become a mess. A 1 hour series reboots on average 2 times. Dont know if this is LG or plex who needs to fix something here? Using plex on my C3 has no issues.
Oh how I wish I came across this but just a few days ago.
Wife asked for a TV in the bedroom, so I nipped out and came back with an LG C5. Only required Plex and YouTube usage so that was all installed, setup the TV and happy days. LG make wonderful OLEDs.
What sadly soon followed were complaints about Plex crashing during playback across various media types including Dolby Vision, HDR10, 4K, 1080p etc
The single issue is what many have mentioned in here, the Plex app just stops, goes to black, and then says due to lack of memory the app will restart, to which it does.
The problem is that this continues to happen when restarting playback. Occasionally it may not happen, but more often than not it indeed does.
I was hoping not to have to buy another Nvidia Shield Pro, but I may just have to now as this just isnt good enough.
Even my LG C9 playsback content without issue.
I was hoping to come across a fix, or a note from Plex/LG to say they are aware of the problem and are working on a fix to implement shortly…..but alas!!!
I will keep my eyes on this thread, and if any help is needed, feel free to ask and I will do my best to do so.
Seems that the issue is gone on my G5 TV . Latest firmware update seems to have fixed the issue.
Havent seen any crash so far. Had a Plex restart on a TV show but I blame the file , seems corrupted ( laggy ) . Tried 4K , movies , TV shows . No out of memory issues anymore .
Firmware 33.22.65 . Havent had a single issue ( so far) . I had tons of issue before, thats why I went from TV to Apple TV . But Plex on G5 is insane fast in menus , playback etc than the Apple TV. Apple TV for me is only a backup solution .
Plex 5.93.2
Platform version 10.2.1
@ChuckPa is it possible for me to ask you something in a PM ( not related to the topic )
Also having this issue, brand new 2025 g5 and Plex crashing all the time. very disappointing. my 3 year old AppleTV box works perfectly.. hope there is a fix at some point.
Not sure if this is a problem with the plex app or webos but this started since they added Microsoft copilot to webos.
I have both a C2 and C4, the C2 doesn’t have the Microsoft Copilot installed but C4 does so it crashes constantly, I am assuming that AI crap is using a lot of memory even when not running and from what I found out it cannot be uninstalled due to some deal LG made with Microsoft.
