Library Scan not recognizing video files after update

Server Version#: v1.41.0.8994-f2c27da23
Player Version#:

Ever since I updated to this server version on 11/23/2024, my PLEX server will no longer recognize newly added mp4 video files added to my library folders.

I have a parent folder called Health TV which contains over a hundred sub-folders each containing multiple video files named starting S00Exx. I found 3 folders that were added to Health TV after this update and all 3 are not showing up in the PLEX player. If I select Folders under the Health TV channel, it shows all the 100+ folders including the 3 that did not show when I select TV Shows. But when I select these folders, it shows that it has no items in the folder. All the other folders that I added in the past works OK.

I forced the Health TV channel to Scan Library Files multiple times and nothing changed. Below is Plex Media Scanner.log. Note the error on the folder Eat to Live under Health TV. When I checked Plex Media Scanner.1.log, I found the same error for every one of my folders and sub folders under Health TV as well.

Appreciate any suggestions on how to fix this. Should I uninstall Plex Media Server and reinstall it again? Just not sure how to ensure that I do not loose all the metadata that I have manually entered for each of these video to describe what each video is.

Can you upgrade to the current version of PMS to check if the included fixes cover your issue?

i checked and it says that it is up to date with Version 1.41.3.9292. Looking at Plex Media Server.log, I see warnings about a missing plug in. Checking the folder "C:\Program Files\Plex\Plex Media Server\Resources", there are no files starting with “Plug-ins”.

I did a Library Scan again and still the same with same errors in the scan log for every folder in Health TV.

Here is the end part of the PMS log file…

Can you please post your entire zip of your server logs ?

edit have you ever launched Plex as admin (if not DONT)

I do not launch PMS as admin. Here is a link to the zip of the PMS log folder.:

File was too large to attach here

Just found another strange behavior. I have another channel called TV Shows. I added a new folder under this parent folder and copied a couple of videos into this new folder. When I look at this channel, those videos and the new folder showed immediately even before I selected Scan Library. So it is just the Health TV channel I have this issue. I can’t see what the difference is between these 2 channels to cause this different behavior.

Here is a link to download the zip of my log folder.

Ok, lets start with some fresh logs, I have no idea why you have 2-3 copies of your plex logs. I would stop plex, rename your logs folder to logs.old, start plex and then perform a Plex Dance of one of the missing folders. Then upload a fresh set of logs. And provide both the show name and one of the episode file names for us to take a look for in the logs.

My Health TV channel has manually entered metadata describing each episode in every one of the 100+ series. That is over 1000 videos. I need to keep that intact. How do I do this Plex Dance without loosing what has been setup?

We are NOT removing the library.

  1. we are clearing your logs folder by moving it out of the way but keeping the data just in case
  2. We are doing the Plex Dance on media that is affected and not appearing.

You said you added 3 new folders, lets pick one of those. Then follow the instructions above to carefully perform the plex dance. At first guess something in the file name is causing a problem, or its being flagged as a duplicate or something Im not easily seeing could be going on. By clearing the logs, and performing the dance and uploading fresh logs it allows me to get a good picture of what is going on, and the filename allows me to easily scan the logs for relevant information.

Ah, sorry I was not understanding your instructions. You mean to do the Plex Dance on just one or all 3 of the affected folders, right?

Here is what I did:

  • I shut down PMS
  • Moved everything out of the Log folder
  • Moved the 3 affected folders out of the Health TV Folder.
  • Started up PMS and ran a Library Scan for the Health TV channel.
  • Emptied Trash
  • Cleaned bundles
  • Moved one of the 3 folders (Stop Cancer Docu-Class 2024) back into the Health TV folder
  • Did Library Scan on the Health TV channel
  • Created the below ZIP of the Log folder

Cleaned PMS Log Folder.zip (124.1 KB)

In the Scanner.log file, it seems to be complaining about every folder I have, including all the old ones that seems to be working fine.
In the Server.log file, I see a warning about a missing Plug-in.
In the Folder I moved back into the Health TV folder, here is a snap of part of the files. This shows you the file names I used.

So looking at your logs I am seeing that you installed Plex to a non-standard drive D:\ which may be causing some issues. (If you want to move plex, the install files are small. its the data directory you may want to relocate)

You do have a number of legacy agents in use: FYI those will stop working at some point probably soon, and you wont get a notice.

I am also seeing Dec 19, 2024 00:33:16.481 [47672] ERROR - No module in VideoFiles which is something I haven’t seen before. Last reference I can see was an issue that was fixed back in 1.21.

Do you mean you entered these data within Plex?
It would have been much better to enter these as embedded meta tags into the mp4 files themselves. That way they are preserved even if the Plex database is gone. And they can be easily backed up by copying the video files.

Yes, I entered them manually in the PLEX Player app for each episode. I tried putting it in various meta data fields of the mp4 file and they do not show up in the description of PLEX for the episode. Only thing that comes through is the Title. Here is an example of what I have for 1 episode:

I have not found any metadata field that can hold this info and that PLEX will display it in the description. I tried Comments and that doesn’t work.

use the DESCRIPTION metadata field thats what I use for ripped Youtube vidoes, and works well.

This setup on D: has worked well before. My C drive is very small and running out of room for my large metadata library. Problem only started after the update v1.41.0.8994 as I stated before. So I doubt if installing it on the D drive is an issue.

Yes, that No module in VideoFiles error is showing up for every folder I have in this channel. Even for the folders from before the update which are working fine.

Which are the legacy agents? How do I look at them?

There is a difference between the location of the program files and the location of the plex library data.
@dbirch is only talking about the former, which only takes up about 265 MB.

If you really need to free some capacity on C:, move the plex data folder away from it. [HowTo] An extended guide on how to move the Plex data folder on Windows
This is completely independent from the installation location.

So Plex has two parts:

  1. Install Directory (for me less than 300MB)
  2. Data directory %LOCALAPPDATA%\Plex Media Server which can get massive

1 should be left were it is, 2 can be relocated via registry settings on windows.

OttoKerner sniped this response

Thanks. If I reinstall PMS again, How do I specify that the data directory to be in a different place? Also, How do I restore the existing metadata that I created manually?
