Live tv feed becomes choppy

I ended up switching to the 2019 Nvidia Shield which has Auto refresh rate built-in. Haven’t had an issue since then.

I justed noticed the moment when the video becomes choppy and it wasn’t after a commercial.

I tried enabling the refresh rate option but it created some issue with other show that was ripped from a dvd. It was changing from 60htz to 24 and it was terrible. I also tried the change resolution option and no luck.

I don’t know if there’s an option other than buying the 2019 shield?

Yeah it’s even affecting the 2019 Shield as well, but not as bad and it’s able to auto correct itself, in comparison to the older Shields. The video becomes a little choppy even without being in the commercial. Not sure what it is, but I know a guy genius that might be able to chime in @daioio . There’s another person that just posted their lip sync goes out by about two seconds and this is also being caused by this choppy video issue. And it seems to be isolated to Android TV.

@jpgrenier please confirm if it’s only affecting 1080p and 1080i. That’s what I found, my 720p live TV runs perfect. Also is it happening outside of Plex? Try using live channels and see what happens and we’ll compare results.

We have two different tuning devices. As I have an hdhomerun. So we know it’s not the tuners. Now we have to figure out if it’s Plex or Nvidia Shield. If it is Plex then we have to figure it out if it’s the new video player, so does it happen on the old video player as well? I’ll start trying to track down the answers on my side and if you could do the same that be great so we can figure out what’s going on:)

Okay here’s my results. Spent a couple hours to try out different things.

Devices tested,
Nvidia Shield 2019, 2017, 2015
Mi box s
Roku Express
Apple tv 4k

Results
•Nvidia Shield 2019 is choppy only on 1080p and 1080i but recovers very quickly
•Nvidia Shield 2015 and 17 is choppy and like a Jitter on 1080p and 1080i. Either have to back out of the channel or rewind 10 seconds to get rid of and get everything back in sync.
• Mi box s doesn’t happen on
•Roku doesn’t happen on but man the picture looks terrible compared to Android TV haha
• Apple TV 4K issue not present

Old video and new video player had the same issue. Tested only on cable channels and I confirmed they have 100% signal.

Happens on the hdhomerun app as well on the shields. Which leads me to believe it’s just the Nvidia Shields. And the reason why I don’t see it on the 2019 as bad is because it has auto-refresh built in.

Yes it only affects 1080i and 1080p on my side with the shield tv 2017.

Do you know if I can try live channels with hauppauge Quadhd PCI tunner?

Not sure I’m not familiar with that tuner. If you go under the live channels app and then Source it’ll show up there if it’s compatible.

Unfortunately I cannot test Live channels app, it’s not compatible with my tv tuner setup

Yeah so after testing it some more it looks more like it’s a older model Nvidia Shield issue. Not really directly related with Plex although it used to be really smooth on Plex. Maybe something was implemented in the past by Plex which made it smooth and now it’s no longer working. Who knows but upgrading to the 2019 does fix the issue. The reason why I say it’s a Nvidia Shield issue is it happens on live channels and the hdhomerun app as well outside of the Plex application.

Clarification it still will get intermittently choppy but it will fix itself within a few seconds it won’t make you have to back out of the channel or rewind.

Just a quick update I notice that it’s only 1080i everything esle is fine

Yeah 1080p for me it happens on but it’s very rare. 1080i is the main offender.

Okay so I reset my z490 2.5 gig LAN to default as well as my Asus Rapture router. I also hard reset the Nvidia Shield And this is what I’ve come up with. The choppiness or Jitter on 1080i is completely gone on hdhomerun and live channels. But it’s still happening on Plex. Disabling the new video player fixes it. Go ahead and try that out and let me know if it works for you . It’s under settings, advanced, new video player and select no. I’ll reach out to a Plex employee and let him know.

I tried disabling the new player and didn’t work. I also tried uninstalling updates and re installing the latest version and still the same issue…

I found lots of thread talking about this problem for the last 2 years. Oh and I found that this problem is called Judder. I doubt that Plex is doing something to fix this.

I tried changing quality to a lower 1080p quality but it seemed that whatever 1080p setting I select Plex leave it in 1080i…

Yeah I found on the older Nvidia Shield’s disabling the new video player doesn’t make a difference. I have someone that works for Plex looking into it and he’s going to see if he can get it to duplicate on his end.

Do you know a way with shield to see the fps or hz live?

I wish there was as apple tv has it but not that i know of.

Don’t know if this would fix the issue but you might want to chime in on this chat!

Check out at the 50 second mark is this the same issue you’re having? It’s happening on the old video player as well and on the 2019 Shield just not as much. I did rewind 10 seconds back at around 55-second Mark to see if the issue still persisted which it did.

Yes it’s the same issue but me when I rewind or fast forward it temporarily fixes it self

Okay cool I have people looking into it. Yeah generally the rewind thing fixes it for me as well this is the first time it didn’t do it.

Hey yesterday I did the Shield experience update 8.2.0 and this morning I’ve been watching a 1080i channel for more than 1 hour and no judder or choppiness.

Let me know if it works on your side
