These shows don’t show up AT ALL in Plex. So I can’t even try to manually rename, add a description, etc… The scanner just isn’t picking them up:

I tried using both the Plex TV Series & Plex Movies scanners to no avail.
So…what am I doing wrong?

Plex uses IMDB & TMDB for movie information, not TVDB.
They are movies. Place them in a movie library and use the default Plex Movie scanner & agent.
Do not replace the colon, or any other illegal character, with a dash. Just leave it out.
If a MP4 file has incorrect embedded metadata it can throw off Plex matching. Either correct the metadata or tell Plex to ignore it. Edit the Library → Advanced → deselect Prefer Local Metadata.
Plex Dance each movie after renaming and reorganizing.
This matches immediately on my server:
/movies <-- folder added to movie library
/Louis Theroux The Most Hated Family in America (2007)
/Louis Theroux The Most Hated Family in America (2007).mkv

I’ll give that a try but a quick question…how do you determine if something is TV or movie?
Because the Louis Theroux certainly were never released in a theater, they are produced and were aired on the BBC and they are 60 min long so…it seems that to most people this would be a TV show?
I understand this is strictly what Plex views as movie or TV but I just want to know so I can get it right the first time in the future because I have many more with the same problem.

Go by how they are listed at IMDB/TMDB/TVDB. Also at watch.plex.tv.
It can be confusing at times. There are Louis Theroux TV shows and movies. You’ll have to check each item individually. Note that a TV movie goes in a movie library, even if it aired on TV.
There are sometimes conflicts between IMDB/TMDB/TVDB, and sometimes one of the sites is just wrong. Either can mess up Plex correctly matching and pulling metadata. When that happens, post in the forum with the details, so a Plex employee can take corrective action. You can also create a personal account at TMDB & TVDB and edit most listings. If the site admins approve the changes, Plex will pick them up in 48 - 72 hours.
You can use Plex’s Collections capability to have the shows and movies listed together. Place them in a collection with the same name.
Ah yes, now I see it, I had looked everywhere on the IMDB page and it’s right there to the left of the title 
And after doing what you wrote above, the Louis Theroux were in fact recognized!
