Low resolution pixelated video playing despite "Original Quality" selected, on 4k / 1080p content

Samsung Tizen TV, from 2019. Worked well until a few weeks ago. Now with the updated server, the end user TV (on a different network, invited as a user of shared library) is showing VERY Poor low resolution videos for even high quality 1080p or 4K content. It shows OK on my own network with a Sony. But in my other apartment which also has a super fast Internet and Netflix etc are ultra high definition, and in fact Plex was fine until 2-3 weeks ago, the resolution now is horrible. Looks like a crappy Youtube video.

Just to support certificates expired and all that nonsense, I have allowed “insecure connections” on this Samsung TV. No change.

I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the Plex app. No change.

The network is super fast both ways – on my Mac Mini that’s running the Plex Server (the download sped is 450mbps and upload is 380mbps) and on my end user TV too.

What the heck? Why are these “upgrades” making the quality suck more and more?

I doubt what you see has anything to do with

these “upgrades” making the quality suck more and more

Sounds like there’s an issue with your remote access setup.
Have you already checked the information from the server dashboard while streaming a file remotely? This should show if your stream is working as expected (remote) or not (indirect). Indirect connections are limited to 1 Mbps – which could explain why you’re not getting the expected quality.

If the streams aren’t indirect… have you already checked the remote access configuration (e.g. for stream quality restrictions)?

Well what remote setup should I have? Direct stream and direct play are enabled. All remote quality is set to very high or 1080p. What else can I do? Let me share some screenshots below.

One issue I’ve noticed. When I set the Remote Access to manually use port 32400 and enable it, after a little bit it gets disabled anyway. And there’s a red exclamation against it. But this is only for ME to be able to access the server remotely, yes? Or is this an issue?

The configuration of a remote access setup will depend on your actual environment.

Did you already have a look at the related troubleshooting support article?

OK, I removed the manual port stuff. The remote thing is sorted.

But this doesn’t solve the low res issue on the destination (outside my network, shared library playing). What values should I be changing for that?

Can you verify the stream is actually displayed as remote on the server dashboard (vs. indirect)?
