Matching TV-series not possible, even though found on IMDB, and named correctly

I have a few TV shows that I can find on IMDB, and hence named correctly - but I cannot find it through the new standard agent (Plex TV).

  • Is there a way to use alternate database on a single series?
  • Are any of the TV databases connected to IMDB?
  • If there are alternative naming in the database - are there any way I can find them?

Thanks.

Could you give examples of these shows and how they are named on disk?

It is in regards to several shows about Sherlock Holmes

The naming is done like this - each series in it’s own folder

The Return of Sherlock Holmes (1986)

  • Season 1
    - The Return of Sherlock Holmes - S01E01 - The Empty House.mkv
    - … etc.
  • Season 2
    - The Return of Sherlock Holmes - S02E01 - The Devil’s Foot.mkv
    - … etc.

And the same setup for the other 4 show.
PlexTV only recognizes the earliest one, The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes - Simply matched as “Sherlock Holmes 1984”.

The other 3 directories are ignored.

Quick tip: We don’t use IMDb as a source for TV episodes. You should be looking on either www.themoviedb.org or thetvdb.com (we aggregate from both).

Looking at those examples this appears to be the cause of your issues, either these titles are listed as movies on those other services or they don’t exist at all.

I also have a huge issue with “The Muppet Show” - where I have named the files according to IMDB lists - and also double checked with the actual content of the files.
Plex Naming is totally off, stating “Johnny Cash” on the show that is “Carol Burnett”, and even named “Carol Burnett”.

…\The Muppet Show
…\Season 05
…\The Muppet Show - S05E01 - Gene Kelly.mkv

Playing the episode gives me Gene Kelly - Plex called it Episode 1 - Carol Burnette
Playing episode 15 - Johhny Cash - actually playes the episode 15 that is Carol Burnette…
Confusing to say the least.

Same thing here. If you have your library “Episode Ordering” preference set to The Movie Database then use this as your source of truth for episode orders: The Muppet Show (TV Series 1976-1981) — The Movie Database (TMDB)

If you have it set to theTVDB then use this: The Muppet Show - TheTVDB.com

I thought IMDB was the defacto standard when it comes to the naming of movies and TV shows? It is absolutely accurate - and these other ones are not that accurate.
I just searched the mentioned thetvdb.com - and it lists the Sherlock holmes shows as a single show, there they have named the seasons instead by the series name.

If I prefer IMDB’s method - what can I do to either manually register all of them, or use a totally different search engine?

… and as a general point: I am not sure how all 3 databases have different airing dates?

TV is very complicated when it comes to what is considered “accurate”. Everybody will disagree so we cater for both TheMovieDB and TVDB. There is no way currently to use IMDb for TV shows in Plex directly.

You could try to contribute to one of the available sources by adding missing titles there; just be aware that they have strict rules on what they consider TV and what they consider Movies, so your contributions might just get removed if it doesn’t follow their rules.

A good place to start is reading the contribution bible over at TheMovieDB: Welcome to the Contribution Bible — The Movie Database (TMDB)

Thanks for the info.
Way too much work… I have enough work just naming my files…
I guess I have to go into one of these databases, and use the naming there.

One of the issues with using IMDB is that they do not provide a programming interface (API) to query and retrieve information. Both TVDB and the MovieDB have these features. Using an API means you will have better results, and a consistent interface. If IMDB decides to tweak their page layout it will break any tools scraping info from there, wile API’s are designed to stay stable and separate the user side, from the program usage side.

I have every episode of the Sherlock Holmes (Jeremy Brett) show, all named according to the tvdb and no issues in a Plex.

IMDb in this case is far from the de-facto guide.
In fact it’s truly abysmal unless you prefer thinking that a few episodes of a show is one show and the next few episodes are a completely different show and so one until alas Jeremy Brett passed away.

There is a program called Filebot that will greatly help.

I have problems with Legends Of Tomorrow, not show season posters, episode titles and summaries, I tried refresh several times, and nothing.

I had to do the Plex Dance on the files, inserting a season at a time, with specific naming based on the TVDB - then I got the same result you had… Took some time, but worth it.

You could perhaps check one season manually? See if it gives you any poster options? If not, it might be worth checking matching?

This is a known issue related to tvdb api problems. See I am having issues getting DCs Legends of Tommorow to grab metadata for details.

Wow, thanks, I hope fix it soon

I’m having issues with The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes, too. I use TheTVDB as my naming model. I’ve tried myriad naming options and keep hitting a wall. Plex likes to match it to Sherlock Hound. If I try to “Fix Match” the only agent I’m presented with is Plex TV Series, even though Settings > Agents > Shows has The TVDB on top. It IS grayed out at the moment, is this indicative of an issue?

Thanks for the tip about FileBot . I looked at it, and bought it right away.
What a nice piece of application. I have made my own syntax / expression in accordance with how I like the files to look, and it takes just about anything, chews on it, and spits it out in the other end with correct naming, according to the fore-mentioned TheTVDB and TMDB (The Movie DataBase).

I can highly recommend this application in conjuction with PLEX.
