Metadata won't update for TV shows.

Ive been having the same problem, all data is downloading fine, titles, descriptions, even actor headshots, everything except new series and season posters. Tried the plex dance, tried clearing the caches and doing the plex dance, reinstalling, etc, but from what im reading here its not on my or plexs end so theres nothing i can do about it for now

So my question is… i have a ton of stuff in the pipeline right now and since this started im already looking at 30 missing posters (added a few series with lots of seasons), when this does get sorted, am i going to have to do the plex dance or something for everything ive added since this started happening? Or will the butler take care of it eventually when it does start working again?

Does there become a point where maybe a source other than TVDB should be used for Plex? This seems to happen pretty frequently, to be honest.

I too am having the same issues, and have for days now, where no cover art will download. Frustrating to say the least.

You can already set your libraries to use The Movie Database instead of the TVDB. Edit the library and go to the Advanced tab. I switched about a year ago and have had no issues with TV Shows getting metadata.

This is good to know. If I switch, do I run the risk of anything being overwritten that’s been matched in the past?

I guess I’m trying to weight the positives up against any potential negatives I’m unaware of by doing this.

Thanks for the heads up! I just switched to The Movie Database. I have a lot of TV shows to move onto my Synology NAS / Plex server. This makes it a lot easier!

So far I am not seeing any difference to the 100+ TV shows I already have on Plex, but the new ones are now downloading posters. I did have to do the Plex Dance for ones that had the issue of no poster. Refreshing the metadata did not bring the posters down.

@micavana You may have to wait a little while on the metadata refresh. It is probably still downloading data in the background. Give it time.

@rdgmjv11 I would assume that it probably will overwrite some of the metadata with the data from the new source. Is there any show in particular you are interested in? I personally am one that I don’t care as much if the metadata is perfect. I’m more concerned with does the show have a poster, does it have a description of what the episode is and does it play. Outside of that I really don’t care. If you are really concerned about a particular show and I have it in my library I can post a screenshot of the show, a season, and an episode so you can see what metadata I have for the show if that would help.

I tried the Movie Database “fix.” It’s not working with Doctor Who (1963). Changing all the titles to air dates instead of their actual titles. Furthermore, no descriptions.

@warnerbunch can you use the Fix Match option for that show. I don’t have Doctor Who in my library but I do have some older shows such as Twilight Zone, The Munsters, MAS*H, and some others that all matched fine. I do see Doctor Who (1963) is on The Movie Database site so it should be able to be matched.

If I may augment,

MP4 and AVI files carry embedded metadata. If the Name or Title fields are not matches with the online databases (e.g. something downloaded from online and the seeder’s screen name is listed in there) it won’t match. The best way is to clear all the metadata from inside the file and then make certain the files match cleanly (no . Movies.divx,blah.blah.1080p.seeder.mp4 name)

My Doctor Who 1963 shows did not change. My Bewitched seasons changed posters to non-English posters, with no other options. My Frasier seasons changed posters to a single option that does not match what I have. I decided to go back to TheTVDB and wait, for now. If it is fixed in the near term, I am good and will refresh at that time. If not, I will revisit The Movie Database option.

Looks like devs are pretty aware of what’s going on, and it’s really TVDB’s issue, but I’m experience the exact symptoms as @Cyno01, and have tried the same remedies. Hope TVDB sorts it out at some point.

Ok, now its working intermittently? Brand spanking new stuff i added this morning worked fine and downloaded posters (i later noticed not all of it did), so i went and did the dance on the stuff from the past couple of days that failed AND deleted the cache again for good measure but still none of that stuff downloaded posters again. Would it have worked early in the morning but not late afternoon?

Also how is watched data stored? Because of the stuff i moved to an unscanned drive, scanned library, deleted trash, shutdown plex server, deleted caches, restarted plex server, scanned again, moved it all back, and then scanned again, stuff i unmarked as watched was still. I woulda thought scrubbing the stuff from my library as much as i did would clear that too.

Argh, the only thing more frustrating than a problem is one thats only reproducible intermittently.

Since this is going to bug the hell out of me to look at but i dont want to spend the time doing it manually, if/when all this gets sorted will the posters eventually get downloaded without me having to do anything? If thats probable i think i can ignore it, but if not i feel like i just shouldnt add anything besides new episodes of existing seasons until its fixed or its going to drive me crazy.

Genuine question: rather than proxy it is there any reason for Plex not to just mirror all of the TVDB info on the Plex servers and only refresh it periodically, or when a user does a manual refresh request? It would use some resources, but would avoid a lot of support requests and complaints that make Plex look bad when it’s not even their fault.

  1. Yes, just license a copy of the entire DB is an option. I don’t know if / what management thinks of the idea but technically a good solution
  2. I do not know how much data that entails. If a lot of data then comes the cost of replicating that data to all the Plex servers and that goes right back to Management.
  3. From the Engineering perspective, it’s a trivial task.

Can’t believe this is still down. So frustrating. :frowning:

Please sit tight if you can.
We’re working on something right now.
I don’t have all the details yet.

When I have the full details, I will post again.

Hi!
Having problems to download art for Tv shows
Any news about it?

As per Plex:

"Please sit tight if you can.

I don’t have all the details yet.

I am waiting for updates as well.

I will update but please understand I’m on the support team and not engineering for this issue.

  1. The changes are made and they work
  2. It will require updating PMS. It’s not something which could be changed at plex.tv :frowning:
  3. We’re trying to get it out in the next PlexPass beta (Wednesday If I understand correctly)
  4. Please don’t skin me alive if something else holds it back a day
