Plex Server Crashes Mac OSX Big Sur 11.0.1

Tried downloading latest version, and when opening, it immediately crashes a fresh install of Mac OS Big Sur 11.0.1

To clarify, its not just a crash of the Plex Media Server, launching the app crashes the computer itself. Immediately goes to black screen, kernel panic, restart.

I am having exactly the same problem! I absolutely cannot launch Plex Media Server after updating to Big Sur. I had to boot into safe mode, remove it from my login items and restart.

Woah! I’m NOT seeing this. I used a few of the Big Sur betas and had Plex working fine in them, too.

Even if Plex is doing something very wrong, the OS shouldn’t crash. Wow. What computer? I wonder if it’s related to probing for acceleration hardware.

Does Plex log anything useful when this happens? Can you share them?

https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/

You can download my logs here.

I checked the crash log and theres nothing in there.
I’m using a late 2014 iMac i7.

BigSur and 2015 iMac and I was crashing at start up until I disabled all Plex. Tried re-downloading and it still crashes.

All very interesting, I have just install MacOS 11.01. Plex works fine, the computer is not crashing at all. It’s quick and I’m mostly happy.

iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020) 6-Core Intel Core i5

These are the only issues found from install the MacOS update.

  1. Tautulli will not open from Bookmark. I had to relaunch from applications and Allow access from a MacOS popup. So all Good now.

  2. PIA Split Tunneling is not supported at this point with MacOS 11

I would suggest the issues being experienced are Browser extensions or AV

I have the same issue too. I had to boot my Mac into safe mode to disable PMS launching on startup. However, as soon as I open Plex Media Server again manually, my system completely crashes seconds after and restarts. You can download my Plex logs here.

And here’s the crash report I get after my Mac restarts:

Mod-Edit: moved this into a dedicated thread; the thread you posted in was particularly about Plexamp.

Are you using any system-level Adblock, network filtering, or do you have any VPN software installed?

Oh I see you are. TripMode, right?

https://tripmode.ch

Uninstall/disable, or check if there’s a Big Sur compatible version. Report back?

Edit: I installed the TripMode 3 trial, and it’s working and I’m not having any problems with Plex Media Server launching. Also, it’s a neat utility.

It appears that even though I had TripMode uninstalled, the software still had its extension on my Mac. After some research, this terminal command completely removed it for me:

systemextensionsctl uninstall 78UFGP42EU ch.tripmode.TripMode.FilterExtension

Plex Media Server now works fine! Thanks!

I have Windscribe VPN installed but disabled. And also a Cisco VPN client, but not active.

If either of those are causing the problem, it might not matter if they’re active or not. I would test uninstalling them.

Edit: You could also share the crash report from Console.app. That made it clear what the problem was in @bernardazar’s case.

Please explain how to give you the console log that you need.
Will try that tomorrow.

I am having the same problem too…When the Plex Server starting and i activate DLNA my iMac (27" late 2017 i7 32GB RAM) crashed. Kernel Panic. I trying to make clean install and test with TimeMachine Restore and without restore. The result was the same. Now i have to install the latest Version of Catalina and restore the CarbonCopyCloner backup an works fine again. I think we must wait for a while.
Does anyone have a workaround?

When you get the kernel panic and it reboots, are you prompted to report the problem? Can you share the text from that? It might help identify the issue.

I just enabled DLNA in Plex, and BANG! Instant kernel panic!

… in content_filter.c, and related to the TripMode FilterExten I installed to test earlier. It looks almost identical to the issue @bernardazar reported above.

So I uninstalled TripMode.

And now enabling DLNA in PMS doesn’t crash.

I’m reasonably sure this is an Apple issue, not a TripMode (or other Extension) issue, too. Yes, the DLNA server is tickling it. But absolutely nothing Plex does should be capable of panicking the OS.

(I’ll reach out to the TripMode folks.)

Even with TripMode installed, I didn’t experience a crash until I also enabled the PMS DLNA server.

So you can also try disabling DLNA before launching PMS.

% defaults read com.plexapp.plexmediaserver DlnaEnabled
% defaults write com.plexapp.plexmediaserver DlnaEnabled 0

i think i will let it go until a solution is found without doing too much tinkering with the system.
In the end I don’t even know what I have done.
I let macOS Catalina on the Mac for now. Who knows, maybe next week or month it will look different. At the latest when 11.1 comes …
That does not mean that I will not continue to search…

Same problem. Just installed Big Sur, try to launch Plex Media Server and…crash my macbook pro. Automatic restart/kernel panic. Logs present same error as @bernardazar but instead of Tripmode I use LittleSnitch :

I tried to disable Little Snitch but it doesn’t work.

How did you disable Little Snitch?

I just tested, and get the exact same symptoms with Little Snitch. PMS seems to work, but crashes instantly if the DLNA server is started. Disabling the DLNA server seems to prevent the crash.

Disabling Little Snitch from the menu isn’t enough. You have to delete /Applications/Little Snitch.app to uninstall the problematic Network Filter.

I never saw these crashes until I started testing with DLNA enabled. So the other choice seems to be disabling the DLNA server in Plex.

In Terminal:
defaults write com.plexapp.plexmediaserver DlnaEnabled 0
