Scott,
Synology’s DiskStation manager (DSM) lets us do anything we want.
The great part is that we can put our media the way we want it.
With regard to Plex, because the NAS can do so much, we’ve assembled a whole bunch of How-To’s & FAQs.
The main FAQ is here:
What will help you in setting up and getting your head around this, I recommend the new setup guide I’m working on.
The fundamentals are, as Trumpy points out,
-
The “Plex” share is normally hidden and of no interest during normal operation to users. It exists as a place for all the media’s metadata (which can get to be quite a bit).
-
Create shared folders that you want , which make sense to how you want the media organized. Plex will work with anything.
-
We’ve found Synology continues to insist on influencing the “video” share and interfere with Plex even when their software (Video Station) isn’t installed. We work around this by simply not using it and creating our own.
Keeping all this in mine, I recommend this type of layout because some design decisions were made about how Plex should operate on Synology systems and I, as the engineer, have written the software to expect
Putting your media in the Plex share, while it may seem logical to you “my movies I want Plex to play”, it isn’t how it was thought out.
We thought of organizing more like “Kids Movies”, “Our Movies”, “Music”, “Cartoons”, “TV Series”, and other nice descriptive names.
In this How-To , which is still a bit of a working document, I go through the first time setup. I’ve been in contact with the YouTube author whose video says to put everything in the Plex share which he now understands is incorrect
To move your media on Synology, it’s as simple as “Drag & Drop” in windows or “Right-Click” → Move-To which you’ll see in the FileStation (equivalent of Explorer)
