My Breaking Bad episodes display the old name of the file rather than the new name of the file or the actual name of the episode

Server Version#: 1.19.4.2902
Player Version#: Web client 4.41.1
Server Info: Linux (Ubuntu 18.04.3)

Having a weird issue.

My Breaking Bad episodes display the old name of the file (ie Breaking.Bad.S01E01.BDRip.x264-FGT) rather than the new name of the file (ie Breaking Bad - S01E01 - Pilot.mp4) or the actual name of the episode (ie Pilot), which I would prefer.

I have had Breaking Bad on my server for a while now but decided to rename the files so that Plex could pick up the episode titles. Not only is Plex not able to pick up the episode names but it displays the old file name instead (also has old file name when I click on the pencil on the individual episode under ‘title’ and ‘sort title’).

Currently I have renamed the files and subtitles using Filebot and performed the ‘PLEX DANCE’ 4 times–carefully. I have not stopped/restarted Plex or rebooted the server as I can’t see how that would help and typically do not reboot the server outside of necessary updates that require a reboot.

Edit: Plex DOES pull episode information/summaries, ratings, written by, released date, etc. so Plex knows what episode it is…just doesn’t pull the name…

MP4
'Nuff said.

Someone saw fit to embed these ugly filenames into the ‘Title’ metatag of your mp4 files.
From where Plex will fetch it, as long as “Local Media Assets” is at the topmost position in the metadata agent configuration.

Settings - Server - Agents - TV shows - TheTVDB

Do I need to do the Plex Dance after unchecking that particular agent? Or can I just rescan the TV Show Library? Thanks!

Just rescanning should work. The other thing you could do is use something like mp3tag on windows to remove the embedded data from the files.

Removing the erroneous metadata tags from the file is the better long term answer and can be used in conjunction with moving Local Media Assets agent to the bottom of the priority stack. It does not need to be disabled.

Hallelujah! Ding ding ding! Thanks folks…what is that agent for/what does that agent do?

Technically, “Refresh Metadata” of the show in question is the right action to take.

The LMA agent is responsible for reading metadata from files, external subtitles, locally stored posters, that kind of stuff. Anything that exists on your media storage apart from the media file.
If you read the articles with “Local Assets” in their title, you can get a good idea what it does: https://support.plex.tv/articles/categories/your-media/
