Naming and file structure for older Doctor Who

I just got some older episodes of doctor who from the 70s and 80s however for some reason plex wont recognise them.
I have two sets first one it works on fine the latest so “Doctor Who (2005)” main folder and series under that.
But when i do the same sort of thing “Doctor Who” and series, it just doesnt pick them up.
From what i can tell from the tvdatabase this is right so im a bit confused… any tips?

You want the files in different folders.

This is how you would want it as the 2005 series is technically a reboot.

Doctor Who
Season 3
Doctor Who - S03E01 - Four Hundred Dawns (1).mkv

Doctor Who (2005)
Season 1
Doctor Who (2005) - S01E01 - Rose.mkv

Yes understood to separate, they are in separate main folders one Doctor Who and Other Doctor Who (2005)
It recognises all the reboot ones but for some reason lumps the older ones in with those.
Doctor Who (2005)
Series 1
Doctor Who (2005) S01E01 - Rose
that works

Doctor Who
Series 17 (1979-80)
S17E01
Doesnt work

Recently, some changes (as yet undocumented) by Plex and/or the TVDB and/or how they work together makes following the guidelines unreliable in series that have remakes. That result is that you often have to include the year for the original series, even though it’s not listed at the TVDB that way. Try Doctor Who (1963) as the name of the folder. I would suggest re-naming the folders to “Season 17” from “Series 17 (1980-80)” as well.
Something like this might work::

Doctor Who (1963)
… Season 17
… … Doctor Who S17E01.mp4

Because the files have been incorrectly identified, You will probably have to do the Plex Dance to get rid of the bad information and matches for the files.

Hope it works for you!

I don’t know if this will apply to doctor who, but like Looney Tunes it’s an old TV show with new counterparts. I had trouble with looney tunes in the beginning and in order to get Plex to recognise them I entered the season as the year (rather than the proper season), then the episode number. So, for instance:

Looney Tunes
… Season 1942
… … Looney Tunes - S1942E08 - Crazy Cruise

And Plex had no trouble recognising every one of the 300+ cartoons.

Check out Filebot, that program is what tipped me off to it.

Looney tunes has the seasons listed as years:
http://thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=72514&lid=7
so the proper way is to use the year as the season number.

The original Doctor Who has seasons listed as season numbers,
http://thetvdb.com/?tab=series&id=76107&lid=7
so chances of a match are better if you use those

That Year tip seems to have done the trick, so naming the older ones by Year “Doctor Who (1979)” seems to trigger a rescan and split it out to its own entries. Odd but hey if it works
Doctor Who (1979)
–Series 17
—Doctor Who S17E01

works
