Apparently not a bug in their eyes but by design. Bad design IMO but it’s their design.
that’s frustrating. so I won’t switch to the new agent anytime soon
@drzoidberg33 something odd has happened recently where the new movie agent is picking very odd posters and backgrounds.
The most obvious one I have seen so far is for https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/12155-alice-in-wonderland where the plex agent gives the Alice and Wonderland poster and background for Frankenweenie !
Do you know what logic the new agent uses when it selects a poster or background? In the old days I believe the legacy agent picked the default from TMDB so I wonder what logic is happening now to the default ones it selects.
Yep, sorry about that. A deploy went out to our production environment that shouldn’t have which include box cover art as an option which was passing back unwanted posters. It has been corrected and should start returning to normal.
As for that issue with Alice in Wonderland, I can see those getting returned as options too - there is likely a crossed wire somewhere and I’ll ask somebody to look into it, thanks!
When should it start returning to normal ? My posters are still all messed up despite several refresh metadata since yesterday.
Could you give me a few examples of which movies?
@drzoidberg33 for me it was 100s (if not almost 1000) where the posters changed to some crappy version which had text and other stuff all over them. Some where in the wrong language!
Last sunday I actually said enough was enough and I went through the painful process of creating a poster.jpg for each and every movie in my library (which took a couple of days) so that this can all be local for me now. This is done now on my libaries.
So, I’m sorry I don’t have any examples but it was widespread across my entire movie library and could not be missed.
Any of the worst offenders would be fine, just want to check if it’s been fixed properly or if it’s just the old broken poster that’s still cached.
Honestly I think at least half of my 400 movies certainly more.
First example https://www.themoviedb.org/movie/62-2001-a-space-odyssey/images/posters showing this poster:
which is the 18th poster in the English posters section of TMDB, instead of showing this poster (the 1st and default one in TMDB):
(this screenshot comes from a duplicated Movies library which I left on the legacy agent)
and I’m clearly not alone in this https://www.reddit.com/r/PleX/comments/jzk1i2/new_plex_movie_agent_not_as_consistent_with/?sort=new
With a lot of advertising posters like these ones

As I say I cannot give exact firm examples now as my entire library now gets its posters from local files but if I had to try and remember some examples then the 8 harry potter movies, 8 x-men movies and the 7 terminator movies. From that list some will have crap posters.
@paolovador – great example, winters bone. That was certainly one I now remember.
you’re right, none of them are right either. Not especially awful but definitely not the default ones from TMDB
That 2001 poster is the correct one, we don’t use the same default posters as the legacy agent.
The problem that I was describing earlier was with posters that were really noisy with lots of text and DVD logos on them, etc. That issue should be resolved.
I can see the same issue with that Dark Tower one though, it’s not even in the correct language so I’m asking about this one. I’ll look at Winter’s Bone too as we shouldn’t be using posters like that.
Thanks for the examples, it helps a lot!
I really appreciate the focus on “clean” posters. TY!
Yep, that’s my preference too! We’ve got our best people on it
All right I understood the problem with “cover box” posters. I refreshed metadata on Dark tower and Winter’s Bone and still same posters.
About 2001 space odyssey and many others (all the harry potter and x-men series for example) I will follow dokuro in asking you to please be more specific regarding the new agent logic of selection for the default poster. If this new agent is not choosing the default poster based on the most “liked” poster of the ultimate movie database, what are you basing your choice upon ?
Until now I was fine with the new agent, quite faster, no more 1 item collections, and same posters. But yesterday I unfortunately made a “Refresh all metadata” to fix one of my plugin, almost all posters changed, and now I’m begining to feel like dokuro said, so much consolidation of data from multiple sources is now a downside for me. I cannot rely anymore on one source for posters and therefore cannot predict anymore what will be choosed
I’d like to understand this too. It seems somewhat random as one week its 1 poster and the next another poster switching to substandard ones from some.
Anyhow, less of an issue for me now as I’m just going with my own clean posters locally from now on.
UPDATE: made a refresh all on the library using the new agent: a chunk of my movies posters reverted to the previous ones (the expected TMDB default ones), so that’s a good thing, a step in the right direction.
But there’s still a lot of others with “box cover art” posters and others with just not the “most liked” poster.
thanks a lot for any investigation and answer on this
Still no news ?
I can see that my library posters are slowly getting back to normal. Most “cover box art” are gone but half are still not on par with the legacy agent.
Hi, do you know when its going to be fixed?
Thanks!
