I too came here to complain about the new UI. I purchased the lifetime plex pass long ago because PLEX offered exactly what I wanted. An app to playback my local media and nothing else. As the years go by and more and more unwanted things are added to plex, it make me wonder if you only care about your investors. We should absolutely have the ability to roll back and not update the app if we wish to, just like we can opt out of plex server updates.
I will shortly be investigating Jellyfin. It’s not ready for prime time with its sync watch feature yet, but since plex has also just taken that away from us, I guess its really a lose/lose situation for that anyway. It appears there are some minor hoops to jump through, but i see nothing insurmountable. The two can co-reside on the same device, so that’s good news.
This is unfortunate, and I feel like I got ripped off when after years of paying annual plex pass fees, i just recently went to lifetime. I want a refund. Fat chance.
I have a Livetime Plexpass and I am looking at Jellyfin as well. The new experience, missing customizations, and the other garbage being pushed in the app make me want to leave this mess.
Windows ME
I moved.
Whats worse is Jellyfin does not run on Vizio so I had to resurrect my Roku Ultra. Now I have all 3 Plex Jellyfin and Emby running on THE SAME SYSTEM. Ranked 1. Jellyfin 2. Emby 3. Plex
And yes, I have lifetime on both Emby and Plex. What a waste of money for people that don’t stand by the product that was made for the purpose. If I wanted streaming video with ads I would buy cable TV. At least they admit that you are paying for the service not the content,
Lot of issues in this thread - all negative. Mine are about the same.
This feels like a project that was approved and released with nominal real world testing. Finding my way back from adding albums to a cue is the worse.
Design seems to be based on what can be seen in Figma
Agree! SLOW, full of BUGS and way less intuitive / less user friendly than the UI it replaced. Roll back the old interface.
I was not prepared for the plethora of negative responses but find myself in good company. This trend lately with top navigation based UIs is insane!!! DO these designers actually use the apps or just “love” doing something new?!?. Why do i want to have to constantly scroll up and down through the various menus just to get home or to another top level item?
Left nav menus were and still are so prevalent because they work! and always will work! When the content scrolls up/down the nav should be left/right so youre not spending all youre time clicking all over to achieve navigation. Then not only does plex move to this bs trend but they add a second up/down semi hidden menu to libraries.
This redo is garbage simply for the fact they STILL have not added the ability to set the home as my library. I dont use plex for thier “fun” suggestions and worthless recommendations. I use it simply for my personal media.
Oh and i only switched to plex from kodi because i started using roku devices. Kodi is user built and user friendly. Ill dust off my rasp pis and go back if i need to because i cant stand top navigation!!!
For all those interested, I started a feature suggestion way back when this top nav mess hit mobile. Go give it a like if you’re so inclined. Maybe we can get some more traction.
This is my first time here also. I am a plex pass member and I can’t believe they changed the interface. Very disappointed.
Well, I went with Emby (Free) as my first test. Just preparing one library for the test. Here’s what CAN be done so far: Local Access (browser), Remote Access (Browser) (No SSL for either as I have not given it a cert), ROKU Emby app access (remote).
And this is with under 3 hours of time to get it installed and configured with nothing but a bit of help from AI, no docs read. (I have nothing against docs, but I’m in a hurry, and this was faster.)
The ROKU Emby app brings up the media and starts playing it faster than PLEX ever did. The picture quality is great; the thumbnail quality seems better than PLEX.
They way Emby wants to see extras isn’t far from what Plex wants, uses formats like this in the file structure:/Movies/
└── The Matrix (1999)/
├── The Matrix (1999).mkv
└── extras/
├── Behind the Scenes.mkv
├── Interviews.mkv
└── Bloopers.mkv
Its running alongside Plex until I’m satisfied the whole family will be satisfied with it, and remote ROKU users will have success. I’m not sure why I would need the paid version, since this seems to be hitting all my needs.
The user interface is better than PLEX has been for a while, and about 100% better than the abomination that they just foisted off on all of us.
First impressions: It will take a bit of getting used to after a decade with Plex, but I LIKE IT so far.
Thanks Plex for pushing me into finding something that might just be better, and without forcing me to turn my media server into a social networking hub of privacy violations or forcing me to be bombarded by other services I have less than zero interest in!!
I could be completely wrong but I think emby charges for hardware transcode capabilities and that’s about it.
Oh right, they charge for all the good stuff. Ouch. I haven’t looked at them in a while so I couldn’t remember haha
98% of the time, when I fire up Plex I want consolidated “Continue Watching". I cannot believe this made it through testing without most people demanding that at the top of the Home screen. And, I haven’t yet found how to turn off all the recommendations that I don’t want. This update is remarkably tone deaf.
I have to add my +1 to this. I started up plex on my roku and am horrified at the new ui.
It has replaced a convenient useful library list with a load of options I just don’t want and won’t use. Now trying to get to my own media libraries is hidden behind loads of clicks and navigation.
Please put it back to how it was, and don’t do this again. Plex was great, but this leaves me wondering if there is any future in this tool, or weather they are only interested in pushing subscription services and wrecking the software we originally bought into
I want my old UI back, it takes too damn long to find what I am looking for to watch, more button clicks. Who thought this was a good thing must be the same person who wanted to change Cracker Barrel, They broke something that did not need fixed. How about this, let us the people who pay for the service to actually have a say or at least have a way to change the UI back the way we have loved for years vs this garbage that was forced upon us.
and by the 4k likes out of the 4.6 views, 4001 agree that this change was unwanted nor needed
So the main focus is in the centre of the screen, except for that menu on the left hand side which only appears for libraries.. and that drawer on the right for context menu options.. and let’s make the library selection menu horizonal but everything else vertical because that’s the only way we can make that stupid button work in that position..
What a ■■■■ show of a UI.
Posted this in another thread but what the hell…
I don’t hate it as much as most of y’all. I had to look at some Reddits and forums to get to where I needed to go, but now that I’ve managed to figure this out, I don’t mind a lot of it.
I agree the library movement was my biggest frustration and it’s still a couple of steps too long to get there. BUT - I do like being able to favorite and reorder the library so I can get to the shows and movies I return to. This may have been a function in the past but I could never get it to stick in the previous versions and scrolling all the way down to shows starting with the letter “V” was annoying, especially since they never stayed on my watchlist. The thought behind it is sound and I like it, but having the library more easily visible would be much more convenient.
Playlists could also be more easily accessible. I find playlists when I get to a specific show and it tells me what playlists I put them in, but I can’t seem to find a general Playlists option to see them all - this was a feature I appreciated before.
I can’t find my music at all. I would appreciate that being more easily findable since I’m reading on here that people still can find theirs. I’m not interested in the Plex Music app.
I do like the use of TV series and movie logos.
I also need to say that I don’t use Plex to share with family members or friends anymore. I used to until I realized nobody gives a crap about my TV library. So now it’s just a way for me to watch my digital backups of the hardcopy I have stored. It’s just for my own personal “streaming channel.” So for me, the changes are minimally frustrating. I’ll get used to it. But for those of you who use Plex on more detailed and complex levels and share it with others, I totally feel you.
The libraries being able to pin on the left side of the screen was easier. At anytime you could just go to the left and scroll up or down and enter a new library without having to back out of the levels you were in on your current library.
Now that is gone and you have to keep pressing the back button many times in order to get to the horizontal library put at the very top of the screen. This was absolutely no improvement at all, it looks worse and it’s functionality is also worse.
Netflix did the same thing on their app and it’s also worse. It’s funny how it seems any bad change or ‘feature’ Netflix adds all other streaming apps rush to copy as well. I think app design in general for all these streaming companies has gotten far worse over the years, more bloating with unnecessary features added that most people can do without and more added clicks to get to what you want, and overall just more frustration for the user.
I really wish Plex would put the pinned libraries back to the way they were before, I haven’t seen one comment saying they like the new way better. So why does Plex not listen to their users?
