Thank you for the download. But it didn’t work either. PMS runs for about 30 seconds then manually shuts down. Would you happen to have that ‘6999’ as well?
@FanBoy21 - follow the link in my post up above.
Just saying… thanks to Chuck for helping out so much with keeping these builds and all the other comments / suggestions / help you do.
Grab a ZIP of the Logs directory and attach again here.
Here is no benefit of continuous rolling back at this point because something else isn’t working.
We find what’s wrong and fix it
Are we talking about your Syno DS416Play here?
Has it really been offline 21 days?
If yes this is the one,
- Why are you using WiFi for the server ? (NOT best practice at all)
- Can you confirm that Date/Time is properly sync’d with NTP (Global time servers) ?
I’ll be honest. With the holidays and all. I don’t know the exact day it went off. We had a flood and I moved it to higher ground. And was able to utilize it. I just noticed a couple of weeks ago as I opened it through Apple TV that I stopped seeing my server listed and only my buddies. Yesterday was the first time I got to troubleshoot. And noticed it starts up but immediately stops. I found this forum and have been looking at all the posts back to May. Mine was def working in Nov and possibly early december since we watched movies from it. I agree something else might be going one.
I’ll try and pull logs. I’m don’t remember exactly how to do it.
Yes. SYN DS416Play. I shouldn’t be on wifi. It is plugged directly into the router.
I’ll double check the Date/TIme.

Easy way for logs
- Stop plex
- FileStation -
- navigate to PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server
- Right-click
Logs→Compress to Logs.zip - Download that ZIP
- Upload (attach) here.
Bear with me. I had to work through a hard drive issue. So it won’t let me right click on Logs to compress. But I can zip individual files. So I will post what I find. Under “LOGS” there is only a starup crash log, and then logs from Dec 18th,
Logs.zip (5.3 MB)
I did upgrade RAM a few years ago to 8GB. But have had no issues until last month.
Some questions –
-
Does the Volume show as healthy (Storage Manager – from the start menu upper left)
-
Does Control Panel - Shared Folder show this except with your username?
(both System Internal User and Local User dropdowns)
The drives are not healthy at the moment. They were earlier today. But as I was moving my Router, modem, UPS, and NAS; I removed the drives to clean out the nas with seeing a ton of cobwebs. There was a drive issue so I had to remove and reinstall then run the S.M.A.R.T. command per the storage suggestions.
When checking permissions i did see there was no checks in local users under my account for PMS. I tried running PMS again with no luck. Still runs, then stops.
Crash logs shows this “Jan 07, 2024 20:45:26: Failed to initialize logging: Error parsing file at “/var/packages/PlexMediaServer/shares/PlexMediaServer/AppData/Plex Media Server/Preferences.xml””
I see the errors …
I asked if the drives were healthy/stable so we can start filesystem & data repairs
When drives are healthy again, we’ll look at Preferences.xml in detail.
I’m not sure if there was a permissions problem with it or a hard corruption.
OK thank you. I have to replace a drive first. For some reason one crashed. Once I get that issue fixed I’ll reach back out again.
@ChuckPa Drives are back up and healthy again. Let me know what the errors you saw.
@ChuckPa It was the preferences.xml file. I was able to fix issue and now can use PMS again. Right now I’m using .6999 . Hopefully a fix can be made for future version to not knock members off like this. It was an education for sure on troubleshooting. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.
OUTSTANDING!
Don’t you love sliding down the high-tech razor blade ? ![]()
I’ve been trying to track down HOW it happens.
The code to write Preferences.xml is correct.
Somewhere between when the function call is made and it gets on disk – ![]()
It is a wild ride. Everyday is an adventure.
I’ll keep an eye on the future updates to see if I should apply next patch or not.
FWIW: Keep a copy of Preferences.xml (CYA move)
I made a copy of the new one that works. And the old one that didn’t just in case.
I can’t believe this still hasn’t been fixed… Even the beta has no mention of a fix for issue #14691, I’m still using previous version 1.32.7.7621 that is stable but since it is a old version i can’t use the dvr functions because there is no guide anymore all my channels just show channels listing but no data so all my scheduled recordings won’t work because it doesn’t know what’s on.
In the meantime i have setup emby so i can still record all my shows and have dvr usage because i got tired of waiting for this to be fixed, Any other time i launch plex in the past i have got a constant update notice i swear every week it updated lol now that it is broken it hasn’t updated in ages it seems. I keep checking the annoucements thread but only update is to a beta 7755 or something and even it’s fix list doesn’t meantion the noted issue 14691. : / I hope this get’s fixed soon.
