No fallback to English?

I’ve got the TVDB agent set to Swedish for my library and before it would fallback to English if no information were available. But lately it seems not to do that anymore. I’m getting Episode titles in English as well as writers getting scrpaed, so the episodes are identified correctly but not getting the English episode plots.

Has anyone else noticed the same lately? Don’ really know when this started as I’m not adding content daily.

Hej  I’m from Denmark and I have the same problem. I have my language set for Danish in the TV shows library - but whenever there’s no Danish info available, it doesn’t fall back to English. Also, I never get any episode descriptions for my TV shows at all - in any language. General show descriptions work fine, and (most) episode titles are also imported - but no episode descriptions. Not even when there’s Danish language synopses available for all those episodes in the TVDB.

I don’t think there’s a default fallback. That being said… you can always apply a fix-match, click on Search Options and set the language to English if the original match doesn’t provide any metadata.

Thanks, I’ll give that a try… so far, I’ve been using good old fashioned copy-paste

I know I’ve had it before, when no Swedish description is in the DB the English got scraped instead  I know that I can use “Fix match” but then the whole series will be in English. Sometimes just the first seasons are translated and the later haven’t been added yet. But for now I’ll just copy paste and see if this is fixed again

I’ve just stumbled upon this one myself, and honestly it’s a dealbreaker.
For TV series, some episodes have plot / summary in my local language, some do not. Currently 70%+ of my TV shows library is without any plot.

Changing whole seasons to a different language is definitely not an option, having 20+ TV Shows, some with 10+ seasons.

Is there a promise from development that fallback to English will be supported soon? I was just about to switch from Emby and sign up for Plex Pass, but I’m holding back until I know more about this issue. :unamused: I have very fresh first-hand experience that since Emby handles this fluently, it’s doable and maybe even the TVDB API supports it out of the box if your personal API key is used (which I cannot enter anywhere in Plex… :slightly_frowning_face:).

It has worked before so it’s absolutely doable… A bit annoying having some episodes not having any plot at all :frowning:

I’m from Denmark and I am encountering the exact same issue.
Hope this is a temporary bug or a feature which will be brought back in the next release.

Series overview seems to fallback to English. But not episode overviews.

Exactly my situation.

Falling back to english would fix the issue just perfectly.

So as for now. When I add a new show that doesn’t have the series name translated, Plex collects the series overview in English instead of Swedish, even if there’s a overview in Swedish…

I have the same problem. My library is set to german and previously it had an automatic fallback to english if TheTVDB didn’t provide an german description. Now the description is missing.

For me the problem started some time between February 14th and 20th.

I can second that. All my libraries are set to German.
For example, with TV shows, German texts of episodes are fetched from TVDB. But if no German translation on TVDB is provided for some or all epsides, Plex traditionally fetched the English versions of these texts. At the moment, this is not happening.

An example for this is the TV show “Pure”:

Pure season one has German plot summaries for episodes, season two does not, but has English texts.

Currently, in Plex it looks like:

… for season one and …

… for season two.

With older versions of PMS, the English texts for season two would have been picked:

This behavior changed - and I don’t like that change. It is less flexible and it is strange to have no info at all on such a TV show.

Please revert that change or fix the bug

@tom80H @BigWheel
(sorry for pinging)
Any news on that issue? Anything you need from us? Any recognition of the problem?

Thank you for leaving a short note with us…

I clearly see what you’re aiming for.
As stated above… for my part, I’m not aware there used to be such a fallback functionality in the first place. However, I’m not sure what time-frame we’re talking about… so far I haven’t seen it nor heard of it – but so far the shows I own have always been fully available in the languages I’ve been matching them for (using Plex myself since 2016). So it seems I won’t be able to be a strong advocate for this issue.

Have you considered making this a feature suggestion?
(again… not saying your point is not correct – but it appears it’s been gone for quite some time without much reaction so far).

Thank you for coming back.

Here’s another TV show that hasn’t been updated after I added it.

German library, English texts… acutally the same library as in my other example above for newly added TV shows.

If that fallback feature has been removed intentionally - it would not make any sense to create a feature suggestion.

If it is an unwanted side effect of another change or a bug introduced in 2019/2020, then a feature suggestion would not make sense, too.

This is why I am filing a bug report with examples, asking for support.

Can we please have “English as fallback” feature being fixed, please?
Maybe as an option to enable or disable it if you don’t want it by default?

BTW, I filed a couple of feature suggestions - nothing has been done on them, so I am quite cautious creating them every time I see something imperfect within Plex.

See “subtitles” in my thread history just as an example.Much effort - no result, not even an open consideration.

This here seems like a classic example for native English speakers making assumptions of what is right or wrong for non-English speakers… as with subtitles also.

It really would be nice if you could please forward it to the development team which takes care of the agents…

Thank you very much in advance

Yes, please! I too have problems with shows that have no german plot description. If german is available it’s working. If it’s english only (at the moment of fetching) then NO plot details are being fetched at all.

For example, i have to set shows like Conan (2010) or The Tonight Show (which are english only) explicitly to english to get plot information added. If set to german (like my whole library by standard) there’s no more fallback to english.

And YES, it worked before!

Dear @tom80H

I count 8 lads telling you that the problem exists, did not exist before and cannot be easily solved by the users except by manually editing plot fields in each episode of each TV show that has this problem - with hundreds of TV shows in my library, for example - it is not easy to even check, which has the problem and which not.

You were not experiencing that and you are obviously not missing it.

So, what do you want to tell us?
It’s not a bug, it’s a feature?

I invite you: Please work with the development team on this.

If you feel you are not the right person to do so, then please send somebody else to do it (and I am not saying that you are not the right person).

Thank you, sir.

How do you set a single show to english when the library is set to a different language?

You can do so while manually matching a show.
