No fallback to English?

Wow, I just stumbled upon this issue myself!

I just recently gave Plex a second go and I’ve spent the past week moving my library from Kodi to Plex. After hours of adjusting and completing missing metadata I noticed that some episodes I thought were properly scanned didn’t have any episode description at all.

I have around 350 TV shows and the episode count is close to or above 15,000. So checking each episode individually if it’s missing description isn’t something I want to do.

Not all, but a decent amount of non-Swedish shows do have episode title and episode description in Swedish and if it’s available I’d prefer to use it. But of course, if it isn’t available I still want and expect it to fallback to English for the missing fields.

This must be an unintentionally introduced bug, if it’s by design I’m lost for words.

I’m running version 1.18.8.2527 on macOS.

I guess this could be a workaround, even if it’s a tedious one for large libraries.

How does it behave if you refresh the metadata for the entire library or for an individual show. Does it remember the language you did the match with or does it overwrite it with the library language?

Exactly :+1:

I fully agree. @tom80H please give us an update on this issue.

Anyone had issues doing the rematch to get it in English?

I added a show with Swedish language and locked the fetched title, description and genre for the show to keep them in Swedish. I then did a “fix match” and selected English as language to get the description for the episodes since they were missing. This worked okay and as expected.

But today when I moved two new episodes to the show’s folder Plex created a new and separate version of the show (all in English) that only contained the two new episodes instead of adding them to the already existing show that I had prepared. I had to combine the two shows which removed my previous locked fields.

Not sure what really happened and why Plex did it like that, but I suspect the “fix match” had something to do with it since that’s the only thing that differs this show from the rest.

I’m experiencing the same issue. It used to work before. If it is necessary to check which update broke it, I’m willing to investigate it. Shouldn’t be too hard since I’m running Plex in Docker.

Please, is there any update on this?

The workaround by doing a manually “fix match” to English does not work for shows that are still airing new episodes… or it does but it requires a lot of extra work.

When a new episode is found during a library update, Plex will use the library language for the episode instead of the language used to match the existing show. Plex will then create a second version of the show using the library language for metadata but it will only contain the new episode(s).

So for me, I already have the show with English metadata containing all the previous episodes after doing a “fix match”, and then I get the same show but with Swedish metadata containing the newly added episode(s) because my library is in Swedish. If I do a “fix match” and select English on the duplicate Plex will reload the metadata for all episodes and merge the two shows into one.

Perhaps that’s the way library language and fix match with a second language is supposed to work, but it creates a lot of manually work each time a new episode is added just to get the workaround working.

And then I’ve noticed something else, I think it’s a separate issue with the “match dialogue”, but since this issue requires me to use it frequently it’s kind of related. When doing a “fix match” it appears be a hit-and-miss if Plex actually uses the selected language. Sometimes I’ve had to redo the match three times on a show before I could see that it used “lang=en” in the logs when pulling metadata. Not sure when/why, but it appears as if the selected language in the dialogue isn’t always respected when doing the metadata pull.

So a lot of issues just because it won’t fallback to English for missing metadata.

An addition, if the the series overview is translated but the series title isn’t it won’t get the translation…

@tom80H Please provide an update for this issue. Is it at least acknowledged as a bug by the developers?

Same problem, hope a fix is there soon:)

Same problem here, croatian language with no fallback to english when episodes not translated to croatian. Please fix it.

Have this problem as well.

A couple of months ago I actually changed library language to English (instead of Swedish) since I got tired of this.

However now I realize it not English is working either?

The 100 s07e01. No episode summary at all.
Also note that some of my latest episodes of the walking dead season 10 are missing summaries.

Have English set. Update metadata doesn’t get the summary (available on tvdb).

Not sure if it’s related?

I have the same issue aswell when using Danish metadata. My logs ect. exists here.
Metadata not generating for TV episodes

Same here, library is set to Dutch, it used to fallback to English if no Dutch info was available…

It definitely existed before…

Not important enough for anybody at Plex to take care of?
