"No Items To Display" when moving between local and remote networks

When attempting to access Plex on a remote network from my android phone after having accessed it from my home network, it shows “No items to display” in each of the different libraries. I have to force Plex to stop, then reopen for it to access everything on the server. The same problem happens when I move from a remote network to my local network. I am using a Samsung Galaxy S21 as the player and a Synology server.

Can someone tell me if I have a setting incorrectly setup? Or is this just a problem with the programming (like a bug)?

Thank you for any help you can provide.

Server Version#:1.26.0.5715-7000
Player Version#: 9.0.6.31998 (fa17c77a)

Do you have Remote Acess enabled and showing “Green” with your Public IP and port in Settings - Server - Remote Access ?

PMS: 1.25.9.5721/Ubuntu

Remote Access working correctly.

@tmnorthr You are force stopping the Plex client, not the Plex server, correct?

I’m seeing the same thing when moving phone from local Wi-Fi to mobile. Unless I force stop the Plex android app, the Library tab in my libraries is empty (the Recommended tab is populated).

I’ve no problem moving from mobile back to local WiFi.

Steps to re-create:

Start with phone on local WiFi and mobile network also active.

Launch Plex app, go to Movies library, “Library” tab. I see the movies in my Library. Play ~10 seconds of one of the movies. Stop playback, return to Movies library, Library tab.

Tap Home button on phone, return to phone screen. Turn off Wi-Fi. Phone now only on mobile network.

Tap Plex app icon. App launches to Movies library, Library tab (where it was before). Blank screen. After a few seconds, screen shows “No items to display.”

Switch to TV Show library, Recommended tab. It is populated. Switch to Library tab. Empty screen, eventually receive “No items to display.”

Switch back to Movies library. Library tab = “No items to display.” Collections tab = “Add content to this Library.” Recommended tab = correctly populated.

Tap home button on phone. Force close Plex app (swipe up from bottom, not via Settings → Apps)

Relaunch Plex app (still on mobile only). It launches to Movies, Library tab (where it was before). Movies populate.

@tmnorthr

Is this correct?: When the phone switches from WiFi to mobile or from mobile to WiFi, you have to force stop the Plex Android app before items in your movie/tv show/etc libraries are listed and you can play them.

It seems the Plex app is not picking up the change in network.

No idea if it a Plex app issue, Android issue, or something else.

Just want to confirm things before pinging the Android team.

Thanks.

Hi FordGuy61 (love the username!)

Thanks for responding so quickly! You’re on the ball!

Yes, you are correct. I have to force stop the Plex client app on my android phone when I transition between mobile and Wifi networks (specifically the Wifi network that the server is on. I’m not sure if going on a different Wifi network than my home network makes any difference though. For instance, I haven’t tried to go from the mobile network to a friend’s Wifi to see if this problem occurs).

I agree that based on this symptom, it seems like the problem is probably related to Plex’s ability to detect changes in network.

Thanks for your help!

Hi ChuckPa.

Thank you for taking a look at my post.

Yes. I just checked the server, and it does indicate that remote access is enabled. Specifically, it says “Fully accessible outside your network” in green text.

Thanks again.

I think this is where the problem manifests. I don’t know Android well enough to reply with any sense of authority (I own Apple devices).

I will speak with the Android dev about what it should be doing.

Thank you, ChuckPa. I appreciate your help. Please pass along my thanks to the Android dev as well!

@tmnorthr

I just chatted with the dev…

Network detection should be handling WiFi->External and External->WiFi without a device restart.

Would you please recreate this one more time, switching both ways, and then have it forward the log files to you?

Ok. You should see zip file that I received as an attachment here.
plex-log-tmnorthr.zip (1.3 MB)

Thanks for that!

I took a quick look, saw things I don’t understand () so sent it on to the dev.

I hear you. I’d bet you caught on to a lot more than I did though! Ha ha.

Hi ChuckPa,

I’m having same issues with my Android. Is there any ETA on this getting resolved.

Thank You.

Here is what I opened today 05/05/22. Same exact issue. Is there a fix going in on this? Just wondering and any ETA time when this is getting resolved just wondering as well. I use this Library function tab all the time as well as my users.
