IIRC I’ve reported this some time ago… I’m running into this myself more than once a night when watching some shows, so I’ll keep an eye on it.
I am now seeing this exact same problem since upgrading to Apple TVOS 16.1.
Here are 10Mb samples from each of the two episodes (the episodes themselves are on ~50Mb)
Also: shout out to @nibbles! You’ve been awesome helping me through this! Thank you!!
Hi @elan ! Just wanted to ping you to see if we could get any visibility on this issue / updates on a fix. Here is another thread dealing with the same issue:
https://forums.plex.tv/t/appletv-4k-client-stops-audio-after-a-few-hours/813793/8
Anything else I can do to provide information / test? Glad to help however I can!
I just received the new Apple TV 4K which shipped early November 2022. The issue is present on a brand new install of Plex.
I was able to eliminate the behavior by enabling the old player in the Plex option screen.
That is very interesting. My major issue I have been begging Plex to fix for a couple of years is that unknown subtitles will not auto start on Apple TV. The only way to correct is to use the old player. I wonder if these issues have a common root. Now we have the auto playing of sound issue. Auto playing of subtitles. And some people are having a problem auto playing the video at all.
It seems to me all those issue are very similar and the current hack solution is to use the old player. Which I cannot do because it would end up transcoding more content then I would like. I am a direct play or nothing person.
@topher587: I can confirm as well that switching to the old player in the Plex app on my Apple TV corrected the issue for me. My son is once again again that he can binge watch his Thomas the Tank Engine ![]()
That’s great. I think that info will help a lot of people in the short term.
However, to the Plex developers and employees: Needing to revert to the old player is not an acceptable solution to this bug. This behavior needs to be corrected in the standard player. Changing players is only a bandaid that can’t be worn by everyone.
Sory to burst the bubble, but I switched to the old player a few weeks ago to see if it was any help in enabling Atmos (it wasn’t, of course) and the no sound behavior still happens.
And to continue with things that may be effected by this autoplay issue. I have trailers play before movies (3). I have now noticed that sometimes when a trailer advances to the next trailer, it may also be audioless. I have never had that happen before the Apple TV 4K tvOS 16.
Just to throw my hat in the ring. I have the no audio issue on 2 4K Apple TVs. I have used the built in LG app and that plays fine so it’s the Apple TV app at fault. I have switched to the old player and the sound now works but this shouldn’t be a long term fix
Now I’m seeing Apple TV will repeat the last 5seconds of a video after the auto play and then silence after ( or more annoyingly, repeats the last 5sec of the last video until you turn it off)
Apparently iOS16 was the worst for Plex.
So version 8.12 for Apple TV just got released and it doesn’t fix the no sound problem. I still have to use the old player.
Crazy that such a widespread and major issue hasn’t been fixed in 2+ months ![]()
So annoying, wish they’d fix this already!!!
Still doesn’t work, and using the old player, now it just repeats the last 10seconds over and over if using auto play.
8.12.1 for Apple TV just got released and still no fix. This is so frustrating because using the old player means that the DVR doesn’t function correctly with blocky streaming and non-existent playback of recordings.
Still not fixing, mp4’s are silent starting with second episode when autoplay is enabled…
Same Problem here - no Audio after about one hour of autoplaying eposides.
@Plex are you ever going to fix this?
