Not detecting TV media

Server Version#: 1.27.1.5916
Player Version#: FireFox Browser

Hi All

Ive seen a few posts that are similar to this but after reading them and trying the recommended fixes we still see the same issue.

Have been ripping a TV series from a recent BlyeRay purchase of Adventure Time Series 1.

initial testing we where able to stream the original MKV format but these are a bit too taxing on the TrueNas CPU so decided to use Handbreak to transcode them into something a little more CPU friendly into the .m4v format.

initial testing was great and the initial videos dropped into the plex folder where detected and worked as expected.

proceeding to rip the entire DVD for all episodes and convert them all completed as planned, all the episodes play with VLC on the local machine perfectly.

i then thought cool lets name them correctly and grabbed the correct names from IMDB and renamed all the episodes.

last step was to copy them onto the TrueNas > destination folder.

logged into TrueNas and made sure all the permissions and ownership of files and folders where correct and owned by Plex.

opened Plex in the browser to scan the TV folder once done only 1/2 of the episodes where detected.

have tried renaming folder, files, checking permissions & ownership again and even dumbing down the file names to really simple names.

tried changing from DB matching to personal media and still wont detect the other episodes.

none of this has worked.

any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

pretty much at my wits end on this one.

let me know if any logs are needed and the best way to process them from Plex.

Plex DocumentationYour MediaNaming & Organizing TV Shows

Adventure Time, correct?

Make sure you use Plex recommended naming and structure.

Plex Dance the show if you have to rename/reorganize.

/TV Shows <-- folder added to TV Show library. Name does not matter
.../Adventure Time (2010) {tvdb-152831} <-- Show_Name (year), TVDB/TMDB ID optional.
....../Season 01 <-- "Season" in English. Two digits for number
........./Adventure Time (2010) s01e01.ext <-- sXXeYY mandatory. ext = mkv/mp4/etc

Thanks @FordGuy61

We are following the Plex naming convention as per Naming and organizing your Movie files | Plex Support

as ive mentioned even if we change to no matching the issue persists.

ill try the steps in “The Plex Dance” shortly and advise if this has helped at all.

Is there possibly a discrepancy between the DVD files and the ordering for the shows that were aired?

Episodes that are on the DVD but weren’t aired? Different order?

There used to be DVD aired or unaired setting the server but I never used that and it’s not jumping out at me

Maybe someone with more experience can help you with that if you think it may be an issue.

Ok so far ive had some success with getting the files detected.

as suggested by @FordGuy61 moved all the files out
“Empty Trash” > Rescan > rename folder with tvdb series id {152831} in the title
added back some files to test and noted that files renamed with s01e03.m4v as an example where being detected while others where not.

what’s strange here is that the names of each episode are not being added only a small preview of each show.

see screen shot.

so im about to play around with adding the tvdb id to a few titles and seeing if they are picked up with the correct title.

i think emptying the trash also helped with the rescan as nothing was being picked up before with the rescan so may have been some sort of XML corruption happening.

will report back after testing.

Ok we are gold now.

lots of troubleshooting and the final solution was to switch the TV library to IMDB which then pulled all the correct titles and cover art adding to all the episodes and Season artwork.

Steps

  • move out items
  • empty trash
  • rescan library
  • add back correctly named folder with TVDB ID
  • rename all episodes to use the series naming convention (not the movie naming convention which is what i had been doing originally) i.e. s01e03.m4v
  • switch tv shows database to IMDB
  • rescan

all now working as expected.

thanks everyone for your assistance, would have been a lot more “bangs head on wall” going on without your assistance.

enjoy the rest of your weekend

You cannot switch a tv show library to the IMDb.

You are linking to the instructions for a “Movie” type of library. However, “Adventure Time” is a tv show. It must be put into a library of the type “TV Shows”. Otherwise your results in Plex will never match your expectations.

Your issue above looks like being caused by embedded “Title” metadata in your files.

not sure if you can tell by the screen shot, this is the IMBD format with actors etc below.

as i’ve mentioned in my post once i selected to match with IMDB all the titles of each episode and actors populated also the correct artwork the the season as well at the primary cover.

none of this worked with the default settings.

You cannot switch a tv show library to the IMDb.

IMDB does Movies + TV Shows

please read my last reply and not the top comments as i was reporting back with what i was doing on the fly.

if you read the remaining comments i have pointed out that it was a mistake and i was using the incorrect naming convention in my initial import.

thanks to @FordGuy61 for pointing me in the right direction.
