Nvidia SHIELD/Android app SSA/ASS format anime subtitles + transcoding problems

Amazing. I’ve been waiting for proper subs support in Android for so long. Just tested it on Pixel 4A and Fire Stick 4K Max, and both are direct playing .ASS format.
Thank you very much.

Well on the plus side, there was a speciifc series I was doing a rewatch on and while previous versions of the app would crash when I tried playing this one show, the newest build seems to have fixed that and it plays now. :+1: But I’m having a rather weird issue now – I can’t view the pre-play screens of any show. I can view the screen of a specific episode, and I can browse a library’s listings, but when I choose a single show or long-press an episode and choose “go to show” the whole app crashes.
I’ve tried a complete removal and reinstall of the app to clear the saved files from the previous version.

Okay, I’ve narrowed this down. It only happens when I try to view a show where I have only one season (because I have libraries set to hide seasons for single-season series). If I pull up one with multiple seasons I can view the show’s pre-play screen and the listings for a single season within.

Here are some client logs of me browsing around and crashing it several times:

9.6.0.33884 fixed my issue with subs not showing up until I deselect and reselect.

But I’ve got another one. Fix one bug, and three more popup lol. The life of a programmer.

When I skip forward or backwards, the text disappears until the next line, but the effects still show.

The latest build does indeed fix the issue I had with subtitles not playing at the beginning and the app crashing sometimes trying to play those files

I can see why that happens but I’m not entirely sure it’s solvable, it’s happening because when we seek to a specific position we don’t end up demuxing frames that are before the seek position and for this case there is a subtitle frame that is before your seek that has a long duration.

I will investigate and see if it’s possible to solve in some way. Thanks for reporting.

For two particular filea I noticed the subs are smaller than what they actually are

That looks like it’s doing the correct thing as the subtitles are sized based on the videos size when it’s rendered, on Android due to the screen dimensions it’s being letterboxed which shrinks the video slightly in order to fit into your screen.

Will test the sample though (thanks for that) and make sure it is behaving correctly and there’s not some odd sizing information being passed. I’m assuming your trying this on a mobile device?

Yes these were played on my mobile device but the same thing happens on my Android TV

@sixones just wanted to bring your attention to the issue I commented about around a week ago as I’m not sure if you saw it or not. I also wanted to say that I’m glad this feature is getting developed and can’t wait for it to go on the public release.

Thanks for the update. I have tested this latest version. On android, it plays fine but not on Amazon Firestick 4K. The subtitle won’t show up.

Would you be able to share an external subtitle file that this happens on?

Could you fetch the logs for me from your Amazon device and i will take a look.

Is ASS support included in the last official beta?

What I’m still missing is overriding the formatting so that I can display the subtitle at the top. Will that come?

I attached a zip that has the extracted ass file, the attachments, and an mks file with both the ass and the attachments file in it. The styling in the screenshots happens from 00:15 - 01:18.

Here is the log.

Hi, the links no longer work.

Is a re-upload possible?

There’s a new BETA available on Playstore which is higher version compared to the one available here, but it doesn’t have ASS subs support yet.
So anyone who wants to keep the subs support might want to hold on updating it via Playstore.

I’m facing an issue where the subs stop showing up at a certain point

Think we could get the Play Store beta version on Android TV to have support for the ASS subs?

Hi, could you upload the APK files again? It seems that thay expire very quick, it has only been 8 days since they were uploaded and thay can’t be downloaded now :s
