Nvidia Shield app closes shortly after opening starting this morning

Getting the same thing, clearing the cache did help for a bit but it’s still happening about 70% of the time. Any place I can send logs?

I keep checking for updates and there’s nothing. I love that the new app they forced on us for the 4/29 Plex Pass deadline, doesn’t support casting… and the Shield app they forced… fails to work 70% of the time.

This is just crazy, all 3 of my shields have now auto updated, and they are all crapping out.
Uninstall app, update app, launch, crash, launch authenticate, crash, launch select media, crash, launch, select user, crash, launch, crash, endless crash crash crash.

I can’t even tell you what the version is because the app never makes that far before it crashes.

I am installing Jellyfin.

Why don’t you guys just side load the old app back?

My problem was with Plex version 10.26.1.123, which is the latest version available at the moment. I downloaded and installed version 10.26.0.2578 and my problems are over!

I’m assuming I’ll need to side load that version?

Yes. I would recommend the Downloader app since you can access the forum post with the APK using the built-in browser if you don’t already have a procedure for sending external files to the Shield you prefer.

I just downloaded the apk from plex site and put in my NAS. Just installed with fx file explorer.
After few minutes, it automatically updated to the latest version(10.26.1.123) and still works! Weird!
Anyways, the trick is install previous version, than update to latest…works for me…

Just side loaded 10.26.0.2578 and it’s working nicely.

Hi where did you download from please

Hi there where did you find the file to download please

This app is crashing due to a timeout issue. if you let it load, and sit there for a minute or two, whatever it’s waiting for will be loaded and the app will run okay.
if you go through menus too fast, it can crash.
it almost feels like a watchdog issue, like the app is blocked and wont respond to the UI - when the UI detects no response after a certain window it closes the app instead of waiting.

whatever is going on, Plex needs to fix their app. brutal.
we paid for this… hello?

Welcome to the modern Plex world. I moved to Jellyfin + Streamyfin over a month ago and haven’t looked back. I’ve been slowly moving my users over as well.

Plex crashes at least 3 times a day… Jellyfin 0 crashes. Time to move.

It would be great if Plex would acknowledge this issue. I have the issue on a 2017 Shield but no issues on a brand new one. But I don’t think it’s the Shield that’s the problem.

I have been a Plex Pass user and running the server on my 2017 Nvidia Shield for 5+ years without issue. My primary player also runs on the same Shield and has been without issue. For that, I applaud the development team for a stable platform without excessive feature bloat.

Something has changed. The player upgrades since 10.26.0.2578 on my Nvidia Shield 2017 have all been problematic. The player is unstable and almost unusable due to frequent crashes and slow responsiveness. This has occurred on every version up to 10.18.0.3441.

If these updates were not intended for streaming devices like the Nvidia Shield then please communicate this clearly to both end user and platform developers so action can be taken to prevent auto updates to unintended versions for a given platform. I am much better off after locking my device to version 10.26.0.2578.

Please acknowledge there is an issue with the player update and provide a way forward.

I’ve been affected by the same issue myself, on the 2017 NVIDIA SHIELD running the latest Android builds; started about 4-6 weeks ago.

I’ve sideloaded many versions of Plex for Android TV for testing, both older and newer (the 2025 builds) and all seem to be affected. (10.28.0.3441, as one example).
Versions that precede onset of the performance issues appear to be affected as well, indicating that it might not be a Plex client update at fault.

The app appears to freeze at the user select screen and then often crashes during navigation (switching between libraries or between content), but never crashes during video playback. It will often crash 5-10 times in a row, and other times performance will be fine.
Client-side Plex logs do not show any errors that would indicate the cause of the crashes.

I have had the exact same issue for months now. I’ve tried reinstalling the Shield OS from scratch, but that did nothing. Downgrading the Plex app fixes things temporarily, but it then auto-updates and the issue begins again. I’m assuming there is a way to turn off auto-updates, but I really don’t feel like that should be necessary. This is clearly an issue that is affecting numerous users and it’s been a problem for far too long.

Yeah, this is infuriating. Basic stability shouldn’t be bottom of the list.
