MKV + external SRT - works (auto transcode)

Since it is using aTV to overlay the subtitle so why not use aTV's setting? (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT5877)
This is iOS 7 only I believe (well the majority of the settings there).
Also what happens then for native versus burned subs, it might confuse thing a lot.

The funny thing is Baa is not a native English speaker but it is very hard to tell, probably because he has had no access to subs so got good quick hehe ;P
Just to confirm that the problem is the .srt encoding. If the .srt file is UTF-8 it works fine but ANSI not.

I also have problems with the subtitles. They are not showing. I'm using MKV with external SRT. Dutch language.
PlexConnect setting is Transcode, but Auto setting does not work either. I attached the subtitle which is not working.
Is it possible to use GIT to go back to the commit before the subtitle commit? Go back to this commit?

You can always go back manually. Backup the certs folder, settings.cfg and atvsettings.cfg.
Go to the commit you want on Github, select browse code and then download the zip on the right hand side.
Add the backed up files back in and you are good to go.
Hi all
I am experiencing some weird behaviour with .srt subtitle files and “.avi” movies. I see duplicated subtitles, and depending on the size of the subtitles selected they “desynchronize” faster or slower. If I select none in the subtitles option none is shown, so subtitles are not embedded.
Funny thing is that mp4 files with srt subtitles work fine.
Anybody else with same plroblem?

This is not the iOS client support forum. Additionally if you experience issues with both PlexConnect and iOS then it is not a specific PlexConnect issue (most likely a PMS bug).
Ok, I did it. I did another commit:

- setting to force renderer: Auto (iOS, PlexConnect, PMS) // iOS, PMS // PMS
- determine need for transcoding based on subtitle setting
This one is somewhat risky, I guess. There is just to much interrelation between setting "transcoder action", aTV capabilities (m4v/h264/aac), PMS activity (none, direct stream, transcode) and those subtitles (embedded, external, tx3g, srt, ...), nada nada nada...
I tried to create a matrix to show all the influences to test against - honestly, for me it got to many dimensions. No chance to write that down. It needs some mathematician with better imagination, understanding those things way behind 3D.
I guess, what I want to say is the following: My confidence level for this commit is way below the desired average. :-(
So in the end you will find some bugs... and if so, just keep them - I don't need 'em. :-D

With the new version my subtitles are all gone. doesn't work for me
- which subtitles (format, external/embedded), sample file?
- where are they gone? Give them a call, say hello, they might come back. :-D

How about parse subtitles in Python and return parsed result in JSON format?
I think it would be easier to write the parser in Python since it's easier to debug.
AFAIK, debug JS in ATV can be only done by printing logs. Am I right?
Also, we can detect encoding and convert to Unicode in Python, so we can support non-Unicode encodings.
I have no idea how to do convert encoding in JavaScript.
That would mean, add a "subtitle transcoder" to PlexConnect... Would work, I guess. In "Ask a Ninja" I questioned if there is any subtitle transcoding available in PMS, the place where it should show up in my eyes. Unfortunately there is no such solution (yet?).

The trouble with adding that to PlexConnect is, that we only have access to external subtitles. We can't modify embedded ones easily (well, unless we pre-process the whole movie and extract them).
And yes, debugging JS on aTV is a pain... Though I guess the actual parser could be tested externally in any browser and later added to "application.js".
I was also looking around to solve that UTF issue we seem to have - this is what I came up with so far:

Working on the "that works"/"that doesn't" reports in respect to SRT files with BOM is next on my list anyways...
Looking at latest PHT change log, it looks like all subtitles are to be converted to UTF-8 by new PMS, before handing them over to clients.
bcse - the more I think about it, the more I like your proposal...
When we bring up a "SubtitleConverter/Transcoder" (whatever) it could take care of the very limited possibilities of the current aTV implementation (four lines/only one font in light, normal, heavy/one format per line/...) (not sure if we can improve that be hooking up to the iOS native player subtitle feature - that would be great).
At least it will get a lot easier to add other subtitle formats or encodings.
