Official new subtitle renderer feedback thread

...the other iOS device (or the Plex client thereof) forces PMS to do the burn-in subtitle thing, same as disabling the PlexConnect subtitle renderer.

You can just disable PlexConnect's subtitle rendering and get the same effect without having to use AirPlay.

I don't think I understand what you mean. Will disabling PlexConnects subtitle renderer still show mkv subtitles, but as transcoded by PMS? Is it just the combination of PMS transcoding and PlexConnect rendering that messes things up?

I'm confused, please clarify. If I turn off PlexConnect subtitle rendering, and just turn on "always transcode" on PMS, subtitles will show just fine?

Yes, PMS-transcoded MKVs with embedded subtitles work just fine.  It's just that your CPU will hurt, but everything remains in sync.  You can also use the PlexConnect subtitle renderer, but you first need to extract the subtitle file, which takes about all of 30 seconds or so, BUT once you pause, rewind, or fast-forward, the subs fall out of sync.  As long as you play the MKV from beginning to end, all is good.  It's a Plex problem, not a PlexConnect problem.

Am i the only that is seeing when subs are embedded in the MKV they are bigger then when they are shown from a .srt file?

Don't know... but embedded subs can't be rendered by PlexConnect/aTV, they will get "transcoded into the video stream" - I guess you see the PMS subs.

When ever there are symblos at start or end of a sentance i see a ? example :

We need to know:

  • Does this happen in PHT/PlexWeb?
  • The media and sub type and if it is embedded
  • What setting you have in PlexConnect for subtitles
  • A sample of a sub and what language/encoding might be useful as well

Hi f00b4r,

- No it doesnt its working perfect in PHT,Plexweb

- i am attaching an example. Its  str . Greek language

- settings SubtitleRender : Auto

Thanks

Greek SRT: Since this seems to be a 7/8bit ASCII file with special codepage, are you able to convert it to UTF and check how those symbols will show then?

Why if i set subtitle renderer setting to “auto” it doesnt work? I am pretty sure it used to. I used to see Apple typical font…now it doesnt work unless i set it to “PMS” or “iOS, PMS” but the font is different, bolder and less readable

That is when your PMS burns in the subs to the video track, you cannot do much about that at the PlexConnect end (maybe in the PMS settings). If you are having issues with the PlexConnect renderer then you need to provide the info requested in the sticky on how to report an issue for us to help you, i.e. Fill in the template and provide logs.

Yeah i know but till yesterday i was seeing typical Apple fonts and i never touched subtitle renderer

I understand that but we can’t help you without an understanding of your setup and logs.

Both link to settings.cfg and not your log file.
Also you should upgrade to the latest PlexConnect first as that is a very old version.

Sorry, updated link. and 0.3.5 is OpenPlex version. PlexConnect is updated

Does this happen if you run vanilla PlexConnect?
You also need to create a log with the issue being recreated at the time.

never tried vanilla plexconnect, i dont even know what that is. always used openPlex and it always worked. Just all of a sudden dowsnt show subs anymore unless i set subtranscoder to pms or ios, pms; but font is not the one it used to

I have already explained about the font, by changing that setting you are getting your PMS to hard code the subs in the video stream.

PlexConnect is the actual application that does all the magic.

OpenPlex is just a third party wrapper to install and start PlexConnect via a GUI on OSX (usually once you install PlexConnect it would just run silently in the background automatically), it also allows you to install what it terms themes, these are some minor graphical changes to to some of the ATV screens, but could be causing the issues that you are seeing. Without you testing on the vanilla version, which can be run from OpenPlex it is hard to tell, you may want to check out the OpenPlex thread here first.
