Photos- thumb loads but full size "Unable..."

Server Version#:Latest

Hi all.

I am having an issue with a few of my photo images. The thumbnail and previews show up fine, but when I click on the image to view full size I get “Unable to load image”

So I am wondering if there is a size limit for image display. These are large files, between 110 and 150MB. Could this be the issue? Is there a maximum file size for images that PMS can handle? They are in DNG format, but my smaller camera files ~50MB load fine. Ideas?

Plex doesn’t have a limit but the client might. Do the smaller files have the same resolution. Could be that too.

There used to be a default 100MB limit. Did it go away?

It could be overridden via advanced settings (look for “TranscoderPhotoFileSizeLimitMiB”):

That’s for generating the thumbnail of the image. User said the thumbnails are there, so I don’t think this issue is due to that setting.

Thanks Beckfield. Moviefan I see that you can change the transcoder file size from 100mb to something else. I didn’t see anything that states it adjusts thumbnail size. Am I missing something? I may give this a try to see if that does anything.

That setting is for generating the image. Previously, PMS would fail at reading large image files to generate the thumbnail. That setting allows PMS to try on larger files, which may or may not work depending on the server’s available resources, but at least the option is there to try.

Your issue is for viewing the original file, so that setting has no impact.

Hmm. I just followed the instructions for Mac OS X using the Go to folder and pasting in path ending in plist. I tried to open in TxtEdit but saw no settings that could be changed on anything. It just displayed about 12 lines of gibberish. I also tried to do this when I was signed out of my Plex account.

Similar problem for me:
I recently started Plex on a NAS, added an image folder, ALL images show up as thumbnails but do not load full size. Those are just simple photos.
They do not load when accessing on the NAS through firexfox browser, they do not load on a tablet, they do not load on my Samsung TV, message is alwayys “unable to load image”

As mentioned, that setting won’t help, but if you really want to try, use a different text program.

Can you PM me one of these images so I can test?

Hi MovieFan.Plex, by now I figuered something:
the image library folder refers on the nas to /data/images, all the images there have thumbnails, but do not load full size. However, if I move any image into a subfolder, lets say /data/images/somefolder, there all the images load fine. If I move any image out again into /data/images, then I can see how thumbnails build up, but no loading…

So I assume it must not be about the image files themselves.

running plexmediaserver-annapurna_1.18.6.2368-97add474d_armel on a netgear readynas 214

Following closely!!! Gotta be something with the images themselves. Either to large, image dimensions, etc. I am going to try a test where I take a file and size it multiple times in Photoshop (50, 55, 60, 65,etc. MB) to see if there is some size that cuts off the “Upload”.

Okay, I didn’t say anything when you posted this, because my memory was dim and things could have changed since I last checked. But I just ran an experiment by setting the TranscoderPhotoFileSizeLimitMiB to 100 and adding a library using a 4 photos - two that are smaller than 100 MB, and two that are larger.

As I suspected, the library was created with 4 thumbnails:

The 100+ MB photos report “Unable to load photo” when I try to open them, but the smaller ones display normally. Setting the TranscoderPhotoFileSizeLimitMiB back to where I had it, all photos load normally.

So I’m going to revive my suggestion to change that setting, as shown in the Help page I linked before.

@beckfield Thanks for checking. AFAIK, that setting was meant only for generating thumbnails. However, now that I think about it. Some Plex apps do have their own internal size limits. In those cases, the apps will request a transcoded version that fits it’s limit. This uses the same transcoder that generates the thumbnails. That setting would prevent this transcoded version from being created, so I can see how increasing that limit would fix this issue.

Alright! So I would like to try the “TranscoderPhotoFileSizeLimitMiB” setting. Again, the above instructions on how to open preferences for Mac os 10.15 don’t seem to work. I followed instructions. Are there settings within the PMS desktop app somewhere? I just get this: I changed email before pasting this

I’m not familiar with MacOS but I’ve seen where finder will not open that file properly. Just try opening it in another text editor.

I tried OS TextEdit, MS Excel and Word. No love. Thanks though. Maybe someone who is on current Mac OS may have idea. I would be great to get these pictures to load.

I have zero expertise on MacOS, but I’m wondering if the file is protected while the Plex Server is running. Try shutting down the Plex server and see if you can edit the file then. The file is just a text file, at least on LInux and Windows, and should be editable by any text editor. On Linux, you have to have sufficient rights (like admin rights). Same on Mac?

Thanks Beckfield. I don’t know if this is a permissions thing or what. I did try to do this logged out of and quit browser too. I am the admin, and only user of this computer. Will try another way…

Did you try the terminal method described in that article?

This was about something else but I think that it may be of some help:
