Playback error "shaka3015" keeps interrupting my viewing pleasure

I’m getting shaka3016 errors when playing back certain FLAC files in the Edge browser on Windows 10 (1703), which worked fine until I updated to version 1.8.4.4249 of the Plexmediaserver plugin for FreeNAS earlier today. Tried the same FLAC files in Chrome and they’re playing fine.

See http://forums.plex.tv/discussion/comment/1516340/#Comment_1516340

Figure I would throw this out there… Too tired right now to bother with logs, but I ran into this a little bit ago…

Server is running on Win7, playback is in Win10 using Chrome.
Media has subs in it, plex is defaulting to not using the subtitle file which gives an error instantly at start, enabling the subtitle allows proper playback.

Here’s the “Media Info” plex provides with out me poking deeper.

I can’t even play several videos with subtitles. The second I choose to use an external .SRT file for subtitles, I get the following:

An error occurred trying to play “Episode 1”.
shaka3015 (Media)

If I then remove subtitles, it starts playing again. This happens every single time on different videos.

It may be a transcoder crash. There is an issue in progress to do with transcoder crashing with some subtitles. As mentioned earlier in this thread - a server log would show the underlying issue. If it is a transcoder crash then a sample set of files (5 minute) giving the transcoder crash could be nice to have and I can add it to the existing issue that is currently open

There are some forum threads covering this

While Chrome, and Brave have displayed this error for me. I managed to get it working on Internet Explorer (NOT Edge).

I have had this issuein Chrome, Edge, Firefox and the Plex app from the Windows store.

I’m having the same problem with the latest PlexPass Media Server on Synology – using Safari and Vivaldi. Note that Vivaldi does show the shaka3015 error, followed by some endless spinning icon, but Safari just shows the endless spinning icon.

Here are the logs just after trying to play the same video a couple times in both browsers.

I also have this Problem (shaka3015, shaka3016).
Plex Server (Version 1.9.1.4272 ) is installed on a Windows 10 Machine and my files are on a Synology NAS.
My Web App is Version 3.20.5. So everything should be up to date.

I have this error only on one series, but on every episode right from the start.
the log says “A critical Shaka error occurred: 3015 (Medien); the player cannot recover”
and also “A critical Shaka error occurred: 3016 (Medien); the player cannot recover”

Log File is attached.

Thanks for the server log. The logs shows transcoder errors reporting incorrect duration values
eg for safari

Sep 23, 2017 21:30:01.794 [0x7f0509d11700] ERROR - [Transcoder] [mp4 @ 0x30a5a60] Application provided duration: -64 / timestamp: 4371288 is out of range for mov/mp4 format

and similar for vivalidi

Sep 23, 2017 21:31:29.255 [0x7f0514223700] ERROR - [Transcoder] [mp4 @ 0x31c6a60] Application provided duration: -64 / timestamp: 957336 is out of range for mov/mp4 format

The file that was being played
'/volume1/Downloads/Series/The Americans (2013)/Season 1/The.Americans.2013.S01E01.1080p.BluRay.x264-BiA.mkv'

Did you try re-analyze ?
Can you get the media info xml for it
See https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/201998867-Investigate-Media-Information-and-Formats

Does the file play ok with other players?
If it does, will need a short clip giving the problem
Use mkvtoolnix to prepare a 5 minute clip and add it to a test library and if it causes same problem, get media info xml and logs with trying both safari and Vivaldi and logs as before and upload sample on dropbox etc and send me a link to it

I do not really know what to do here, but I turned on verbose logging and then downloaded the log zip. PMS was working perfectly fine. i updated to latest and I cannot play ANY videos, no matter the format. I have downloaded numerous files, movies, episodes, whatever and tested so many. They give me the error shortly after hitting play and will not play at all. Also, then after that the Shaka3015 error pops up at random. Here are logs: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0Bw-ARc6DtAVJcHBPOGE0TDQybjQ/view?usp=sharing

Also, I already tried all suggestions in this thread and elsewhere, nothing works to get them to play. Major bug if ya ask me, I cannot watch anything, lol.

I can see the server saying the client (Plex web) is reporting an error - e.g. here

Sep 24, 2017 19:18:47.569 [0x7f16c0bff700] DEBUG - Client [c5c7tgcpt5gujwxqt2rifhbu] reporting timeline state error, progress of 0/6605000ms for guid=, ratingKey=2 url=, key=/library/metadata/2, containerKey=, metadataId=2

What time was the error ? do you have any screenshots with the time showing.

I cannot see any server errors

Does the error arise on different browsers ?

Could you see if the error arises with a sample file ?

Could you see if running analysis - see if Analyze Media makes a difference
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200289336-Analyze-Media

If problem persists, could you see if the error is displayed for short clips - eg produce 5 min video from
‘/home/aaron/Plex Media/Videos/The.Mummy.2017.1080p.BluRay.x264-[YTS.AG].mp4’ and if it happens on th short clip then please could you make it available together with the logs

Having Plex Web verbose log (you mention it) as well as server logs, would help in knowing when the issue arose

OK, so I already tried to analyze, no difference. It happens in multiple browsers and it also happens when I pull Plex up on my Roku, it will not play there either. I am not sure what time it was, I would imagine night time. I cannot play a single file. I will try to play a small 5 minute file and get the logs. This is kind of ridiculous, I mean not being able to play a single thing, lol. It was working fine.

For some odd reason, now all my files are playing… All I did was delete the videos and re-add them but I had already tried that in the past. Oh well, good for now I guess, I will be back if other issues arise./

same error today (15/oct/2017) using the last Chrome and Plex updates (Server 1.9.4.4325 - Web 3.20.7)

attached log (time: 19:39)

I have the same problem since several week with some videos. I think the problem is related to AC3 playback. I converted the file with HandBrank (preset “Fast 720p30” so with AAC) now the video play correctly with plex.

I can share you the video in PM.

@sa2000 Here ya go. The shortened video clip results in the same error being generated as the original (shaka3015 (media)). I’m attaching the logs from the attempt to watch the short one to this message, as well as the screenshot showing the time (the filename for the screenshot even has the time in it this time, as my mac recorded it).

You can grab the 5 minute clip from my dropbox here: Dropbox - Arrow - S02E25 - Blast Radius Short.mkv - Simplify your life

Also note, I think one of my other users was attempting to play something while I performed this stuff, so if you see something accessed other than this file in the logs, it was that user.

Thank you for the sample and logs. I have not been able to reproduce the error on my server and I used 1.8.4.4249 as well and tried both hosted and bundled Plex Web 3.20.5 and chrome 60.0. Could be specific to Mac - my tests were on Windows. In all cases playback was successful. I had one buffering at 10 seconds in one of the tests but recovered after that.

I will pass the link to the clip and logs to the web team

Sorry to have taken so long to come back. Investigation identified the issue being in Direct Streaming in this case, The team are looking into detecting the problem and switching to transcoding if Direct Streaming fails.

I am afraid, in the interim the only way round is to disable Direct Streaming in the web app but that would mean media getting transcoded and not just the specific ones that needed it

The Direct Stream setting is now within the advanced Debug web app settings page

This support article gives info on Direct Streaming
https://support.plex.tv/hc/en-us/articles/200250387-Streaming-Media-Direct-Play-and-Direct-Stream

Thank you for the update!

Been using Plex for many many years as a paid subscriber but no more. This error has made it unusable. I am not re-adding my library to fix it. I have 14tb of tv and movies.
I use chrome to access my library and now even if I manage to get a file to play the next one in a series wont. I hate the new overlay as I always have to minimise it to restart the file. What have you done? You have ruined Plex.
So any suggestions for an alternative as I dont see them putting it back as it was I use my plex whilst I do other things so dont need this feature.

I have seen more of the turning yellow circle in the last two days as things refuse to play than i have done in the last 5 years. Congrats you have lost a customer. I dont need to give you a log give me back what I pay for.
