Playback error "shaka3015" keeps interrupting my viewing pleasure

It’s an unexpected bug, they’ve acknowledged it two posts above yours, given a workaround, and they are working on fixing it. Can’t really ask for much more than that.

Agree with Rohaq. Nothing is bug free. The Plex team works quickly and well in my experience.

Its really not a workaround when it dosent work either is it?

I have found something that stopped Plex from giving the errors shaka 3015 and 3016. I discovered this while trying to use VLC instead of Plex to watch some recorded TV shows. VLC gave an error and then it made a change to fix the problem. Then the files played in VLC.

I had to turn-off hardware acceleration in the chromebook. In order to access that function, enter the following in your address bar:
chrome://flags/ Then scroll down quite a ways, or search for hardware, to:
“Hardware-accelerated video decode Mac, Windows, Chrome OS, Android
Hardware-accelerated video decode where available. #disable-accelerated-video-decode
Disable

Click on the last word which was “Disable” to disable hardware acceleration.

Then a small message pops-up saying to restart for the changes to take effect. Do so and retry running the files that had Plex throwing the errors. It stopped them for me on my new Acer C83-431 celeron-powered chromebook.
Fireball455

FYI I forgot to follow up on this thread, but I updated Plex Server shortly after I got the problem and it just went away… ¯_(ツ)_/¯

@sa2000 Thanks for the workaround, it does indeed work for videos in my library that would not play. However, disabling Direct Stream and therefore transcoding each file in my entire library to play it is not ideal.

For further reference, I’m still currently experiencing the bug on Plex ‘Version 1.11.0.4633’ when ‘Direct Stream’ is enabled.

To that end, can you provide an update when the bug is fixed and which version of Plex this fix in landed in? Thanks!

I don’t have any further information on this at this stage

The issue as seen from previous evidence was that Direct Streaming was sometimes failing and the change that is being considered is to enhance Plex Web to switch from Direct Streaming to Transcoding when this happens

@sa2000 I’d just like to point out that this happens on any client that has “Direct Stream” enabled.

i.e. as long as the video file being played triggers the bug in the Plex transcoder no matter what client you are using it’ll crash playback. For me this occurs on the Nvidia Shield (1st Gen), Apple TV (4K version), and of course Web Client (in my case Firefox 57) as long as “Direct Stream” is enabled in the Player settings (if toggle-able).

When you get more details please confirm engineering’s understanding of the scope of the bug. As always, thanks for a great product to manage personal media!

The issue that was raised with the development team for this forum topic is very specific to Plex Web and it relates to browser failures when direct streaming and the development team are looking into way to circumvent these issues in Plex Web.

If there is a more general issue with transcoder failures when direct streaming for other client apps then that needs to be raised as a separate issue with diagnostic debug logs from the server and the client apps and possibly sample files also that are showing up the issue

Logs from Plex Web and Server in debug mode along w/ 2m sample file attached. Disabling “Direct Stream” on client results in success, re-enabling it results in failure.

Thanks for the logs. For logs from Plex Media Server you had DEBUG disabled and VERBOSE enabled. Verbose does not include DEBUG so need either both or just Debug. I do not mind logs with both enabled provided you catch the logs soon enough after the error

I could not see any shaka error in the Plex Web log at the time you said it arose (25th December 04:52am)
It does not appear that you included the full log

Also would be idea to confirm same issues arises with more than one browser. Firefox has been known to have issues

I occasionally have the same shaka 3015 error. Just right now I have a reproducable shaka 3015 error. Win 10, Chrome Browser. 23:58 multiple attempts to play a file while direct streaming is enabled, 23:59 disabled direct streaming and the file played fine. I took the liberty to send you the logs via direct message because I am not sure what kind of information there is and if I would be comfortable to post it publicly.

Hopefully the team can fix this behaviour. If I can help in any way don’t hesitate to contact me.
Best regards from Switzerland.

I’m getting a consistent shaka 3015 error on one particular video as well. Linux with chromium. I got the error when trying to play episode 32 at 23:53 on 12/28. I was able to view the video by disabling direct stream/direct play, so I figure it must be related to the same issue. I’ve attached my verbose/debug plex-web and pms logs which should have captured this.

It was a little weird because only episode 32 of this show was giving me this error, not episode 31 or 33, which were taken from the same source, and are all identical from a mediainfo perspective.

Maybe these logs will show some insight?

Any updates on this…
everything has been working just fine…and the next day getting An error occurred trying to play “Memento Mori”.
shaka3016 (Media)…getting it on anything i play now :frowning:

Get the error in Internet Explorer and on Edge. Firefox is working fine.

The web app has worked splendidly ever for several months, but ever since this Friday, when my web app got some sort of update (the GUI changed over night for me), my videos keep on interrupting. It’s the same error code. Please tell me what this code means, and if it’s something I can fix!

Plex Media Server: macOS Sierra
Plex App: Safari on same macOS Sierra

Thank you for your help!

Hey Guys!

I’m not sure if it is going to help all of you but but I have started getting SHAKA3014, 3015 and 3016 errors right after upgrading to Plex Pass. I managed to resolve those by simply turning off Cinematic Trailers on the Plex Servers. In my case failure to load Library based or over the internet Trainers resulted in those 3 error codes. I hope It helps the rest of you.

If it does, pass it along!

Hi, for me I can solve it if i desactivate “Automatically adjust quality (Beta)” in Quality, perhaps you have this option activate ?

As of today, with version 1.11.0.4666 this problem is still present.

I just have this with very few video files, but the files with this error are constant in the way that no matter which client I use, the files won’t play at all.

I have deactivated the “Automatically adjust quality (Beta)” in Quality.

So for now the only solution for me is to play those files localy with PotPlayer in my laptop (where my video files and movies reside on an EHDD)

Hope Plex fix this

Would need some logs (from the plex web client app and from the server) and a sample clip that produces the problem for you

For enabling debug logging
For server - see https://support.plex.tv/articles/201643703-reporting-issues-with-plex-media-server/
For Plex Web - see https://support.plex.tv/articles/201611836-plex-web-app-logs/

Reproduce the problem with a short clip - eg 5-10 minute clip
See
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201035968-generating-sample-files-from-media/

and when the error occurs, take a screenshot and note down the time
and immediately get the Plex Web app log
See https://support.plex.tv/articles/201611836-plex-web-app-logs/
and then download the server logs
see https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/

Attach all logs, screenshot, and link to where the 5-10 minute clip is and give indication of time of error

Hi Sa2000, attached are the logs and screenshot

Here is the link to the mp4 video that triggers this problem:

Please let me know if further information is needed

Thanks

Thanks for the logs. So this was using the bundled Plex web app on http://127.0.0.1:32400/web which is still at version 3.31.1

Please could you repeat the test using the hosted Plex Web app which is at version level 3.37.2 and already has a correction to similar issue.

The hosted plex web app is available on https://app.plex.tv/desktop
