You will probably be able to reproduce this issue if you can get an Insignia Fire TV and install the latest Plex app on it.
I have posted sample videos and logs of both server and device. Did you see my new topic about it? Has it been taken a look at?
I find that if I sign out of Plex in the Fire TV app, everything works fine. Insignia fire TV 39
I’m getting the same error in Android and @sa2000 knows about it, but strangely enough @jesusmc doesn’t know about this issue… It seems that logs have either not been looked at, the bug hasn’t been passed on or some other “New Feature” that the Plex Dev’s want our money for is imminent!!
One question to @sa2000 How can this issue be a “Network” related issue, when for me it happens on both WiFi and 3G/4G, plus it only began from v7.15.xxx and the latest and greated regressed version too, so how long have we got to wait now for a FIX??
I’m stuck on 7.14.9xx where I know this issue isn’t there and Plex on Android 6 plays all my stored media without any issues on both WiFi and 3G/4G when I’m out, and before you even ask for logs, I’ve passed them on to @jesusmc now, with the hope an actual Plex Employee will finally get to the bottom of the issue…
Sorry about this, but this issue for me has been going on from 7.15.xxx ro now, which is how many weeks or months since this so called “Improved” player has been used?
Dave
Using v7.16.1.10610 on an older Mediatek 10" tablet (Lenovo TAB 2) and I see this error whenever I try streaming from a remote server. Everything operates as normally as other Android devices up to the point where I start trying to play the video, then the dreaded “network error” rears its head. I have used Plex on this device in the past with no issue. I have experimented with quality settings and bitrates to no avail.
My temporary workaround has been to enable external player support in advanced settings and use VLC to stream the content. Definitely not ideal, but it’s proof to me that something in the Plex playback software is not happy.
Hi @xwizzard Yeah that work around isn’t the best and doesn’t half give my poor i5 a little of a hard time with Live TV, so I’ve dropped back to 7.14.xxx on my Android 6 Smartphone, but my 9.6" Fusion 5 Android 8.1 Tablet runs as sweet as heck on the latest version, so the Network idea goes out of the window that @sa2000 mentioned in an earlier post.
I think others like yourself that are having this issue to should let @jesusmc know as going through the usual channels doesn’t seem to be working and nothing is getting through to the Dev’s, this is one reason I sent him a message and he was quite surprised that the issue was there… Tells you a lot about the Logs being read and bugs being sent doesn’t it?
Anyway, here’s to a fix in the near future???
Dave
Hi there I guess my Medion (Lenovo) tablet with Android 6 has the same issue since the last two android versions.
All other devices (FTV2, xiaomi mi 9 with android Pie, LG TV) seem to work fine.
I try to use VLC as player now from within plex, only used VLC as standalone over network share yet, but this is not perfect.
please see attached my log files.

Looks like the issue has been remedied on the Insignia Fire TV on my end. Guessing something in an update took care of it.
Hi @jesusmc and all, I’ve still got the issue with the latest version on my Cubot Max Android 6 smartphone, but running great on my Fusion 5 F105D Tablet running Android 8.1
Here’s what I’m seeing on my phone…
Any advice most welcome, other than keep running 7.14.9xx?
Dave
Hi, the team is aware of the issue and we’re investigating it. I’ll let you know when we have more information about the issue.
Thanks
@jesusmc But the issue has been there since the beginning of 7.15.xxx, just seems that just like the issue I’m trying to get resolved in another thread with the EPG missing channels, that the “Team” are aware and investigations just don’t get anywhere??
Sorry, I’m getting a little frustrated with it all now, it seems Plex as a whole at the moment is just falling apart bit by bit…
I await to see what the outcome of the new player is on Android 6, while I and others try and get the EPG issue resolved too…

I have been fighting this for too long that I am atp of switching to Emby server as that works just fine on everything I’ve thrown at it…I really don’t want to switch as I really like Plex and the layout but it’s not worth sacrificing functioning playback for layout! It’s a shame but as I’ve seen this post is how old and Plex has only responded what once (just 2 days ago) unless I missed another post tells me they really don’t care! Just being honest! So, if they can’t get this resolved in a weeks time from now I am completely switching over to Emby!!!
So please Plex, fix this as I really don’t want the headache of switching!!!
That optical playback seems to be a big issue. I haven’t used my Plex server for months because I had a different problem. I just completely redid the Shield a couple of days ago.
I couldn’t get one device to work. I have a large monitor attached to one of the China Android boxes in the bedroom. It was acting up like crazy. I was getting the “Playback has stopped…” error when trying to play back anything on the server. As well, Live TV had audio but the video was frozen. This box has good specs so | didn’t understand what was going on.
On the third uninstall/reinstall I clicked Cancel when the message offering to use optical playback came up.
This time, everything worked. Give it a shot if you’re getting the “Playback has stopped…” error. It can’t hurt.
Not only can I not play videos on my FireTV’s but the server can’t even find the information for most of my movies! I rip my blu-ray collection and go to add it and I make sure the spelling/year is correct (I even go to themoviedb.org to check it) and can’t pull it or it won’t even do a manual match…so I have many movies with no info for them, which is frustrating, especially when it will pull one just fine but the next 10 is like pulling teeth. I don’t know why they don’t add a movie ID to pull it from. Emby gives me no problems what so ever. Anybody else have this issue?
@t4madmin. Your movie rip issue is another problem. I would search through related posts on that or start a new one to get help.
As for Fire TV - still not working. Everything is working well on the Roku that I purchased and hooked to the Insignia TV with Fire built-in. Sort of defeats the purpose of a TV with Fire built-in but there you go.
@simonmason yes, I do have a post that I created and talked on other ones to no avail…I was just airing out frustrations lol…
Yeah, we had the Roku before the FTV’s but after we switched everything worked great without a flaw, then out of the blue (and without any updates to the server) it just stopped playing video files and the headache began! With the Roku’s, I had a kids account setup for my boys and the Roku app would not load their profile for anything…it might take 5 or 6 times of closing and reopening the app and having a 6 and 8 year old thats ready to watch a movie and trying to explain the joys of electronics just don’t go over very good! So I thought all was well after our switch but lo behold here I am again…
and also, it’s not the ripping process that’s the issue, it’s the scrapper that’s not finding the metadata…I used Kodi with the same process b4 Plex and no issues what so ever!
I downloaded Emby and started playing with it. So far I have been impressed.
I’ve been following this for what seems like forever. Might switch players soon. Long story short, I see some comments saying that version 7.14.9xx still works? I am experiencing this problem on Android. Is there a way I can roll back to the version or am I stuck now that I have updated?
Thanks
Second question. I guess this is OS specific?
Android tablet (Android 7.1.1) running Plex 7.17.0.10904 works fine.
Android phone (Android 7.0) running the same Plex version gets this “playback…” error
No update available for my phones OS to test with. Just thought I would throw it out there. Likely already in the notes above but this chain it getting super long to read. PLEX HELP US!
