"Playback has stopped because the connection to the Plex Media Server has been lost"

My issue is on the Cubot Max, running Android 6. It’s great for TV, what a joke that’s become but not for movies that are on my server, the player just gives up totally. I don’t run passthrough for audio, just using the all singing all dancing player, but it’s not playing ball full stop.
Been like it since 7.15.xxx currently stuck on 7.14.9xx as it’s the only version that doesn’t have the issue.

Dave

After every other update this playback issue on the Insignia Fire TV comes back. It’ll work fine one server update, then once I update to the next release, it breaks. I’m sure y’all have the resources to secure an Insignia Fire TV in-house to do testing. This is getting ridiculous.

Thanks for the information. Could you confirm whether you see the issue due to any of these video player features (enabled / disabled via the apps settings):

  • Do you have passthrough enabled, if so, do you still get the issue when its disabled?
  • Do you have refresh rate switching enabled, if so do you still get the issue when its disabled?

@sixones My issue is I don’t have passthrough enabled in my phone, and refresh rate? Is this on the phone or the TV side? I only use Plex on the phone to play films which it’s failed to do since 7.15.xxx but 7.14.9xx works just a treat, so my question is what have you changed to screw up devices not able to play files from the Server from 7.15,XXX

Dave

I have been having this issue for over 6 months. I currently am using version. 7.16.10610 on an Insignia Fire TV. But this also wa happening on my firestick which was on older version. I no longer have that cause I got the TV thinking it was the stick cause other devices it works fine on. I have been paying for a plexpass for some time now and my main source to use it has not worked. I would like to know what I can do cause I don’t think can roll back my version. Also how can I get a credit since I am not able to use what I have paid for.
I have tried every playback size passthrough enabled or not. Switch on ot off and still nothing. I am using another person’s server and they have confirmed other fire sticks and TVs working. Please help this is one of my only forms of watching movies and stuff.

Interesting, so far these reports have been from TV devices only! It’s most likely you’re experiencing a different issue to the others on this thread. As such it’s probably better if you start a new thread and tag it with android-mobile. If you could include logs from when it’s failed on a new version and when it’s working on an older version that would be a big help.

Would you be able to take some screenshots of the quality settings you have configured in the Android TV app? If you have Adjust Automatically enabled, try disabling this.

@sixones is that addressed to me and a few others that have got this issue on our phones to? Have had this issue as I said since the release of 7.15. currently running the last version of 7.14 before the new player came out without issues. But I’ll start a new thread if you wish??

Dave

If you can for the phone issue, looking through the thread it seems like mostly everyone else is having an issue on a Android TV device, so even if they are the same since it’s happening on mobile it will require a different set of logs / questions asked, and I don’t want to make this thread more confusing!

@sixones I did post my logs from my phone in this thread a while ago, but line I’m beginning to think no one in Plex is bothering to aid us?
I’ve started a new thread anyway…

Dave

I started getting this error last night on a new FireTV stick, but only on one specific file. Sever configuration hasn’t changed in years, lastest version of Plex Server is installed.

Amusingly, the file plays perfectly on my old Roku 3. Seems like an issue with the FireTV App

I’m sorry I have not been able to get the picture for you yet. However this happen with both my Insignia fire tv and with a fire stick.

I have this problem on my Insignia Fire TV. All of my other Plex enabled devices (Roku TV, Shield TV, Sony Android TV, TiVo, LG TV, Pixel 3, Android Tablet, etc.) work just fine. The error occurs whenever a movie encoded with H.264, which is most of them, is played. I have recently begun ripping some Blu-rays to H.265, and those seem to play just fine.

Here are the pictures you requested. http://imgur.com/a/o0A1VGu

+1 for someone with an Insignia FireTV that is experiencing this issue. We have two of these TVs and both experience the error on every video file.

Yet three TVs with a FireStick all play without issue (along with web browsers and Google apps that play flawlessly).

This seriously needs to get fixed pronto!

Hi all,
Just to help me think straight and set something straight, the Fire Stick is based on Android is it not? So even after @sixones insisted I should start a new thread for the Android issue which is the same issue, I’ve had no response whatsoever!
This is just the usual Plex rubbish I’ve come to get used to since using the apps and server.
I’ve given up totally with the live TV side because of the mess the new EPG is in and got fed up of being asked to delete my DVR and use another lineup.
Both Android and Fire OS users have been putting up with this issue since .15.xxx and most of us are using 7.14.99x just to get this thing working with the old player.
We need more answers than start a new thread etc etc…
Fix this soon else you’ll need your tin hats and hasmat suit Plex developers!! The complaints will only get more and more!!

So there seems to be many people and devices with the Exoplayer issue. Many of the clients that we have built servers for seem to have this issue on almost all devices after the 7.15 update. What we have noticed is that it only affects clients who sign into Plex on varying Android devices. If the client isn’t signed into the account, the Plex client will use the default video player for direct play. TV, boxes, Nvidia Shield, tablets and cell phones are all affected. The exoplayer seems to be the issue.

@sixones and any Devs reading this, can you explain why from 7.15.xxx to this latest version on my Android 6 smartphone I cannot stream stored media from my server at all?
Here is the error message

It’s been months now and it just seems you cannot be bothered to fix this issue at all!! I’m getting that fed up with it all now, I may just dump my server and go with something else that is more reliable? @elan You must understand how we as Plex pass users feel with an Android app that just fails to work when trying to play media from our servers, it just seems you’re more bothered about Apple devices when there are now Android users.

For the original issue, we are investigating the issues and continuing to look through logs that are sent to try to figure out the problem, as of yet though we are still unsure. As I’ve mentioned before from what we can tell the server stops sending data to the Android client and the client ends up stalling out on playback.

The new issue that is occurring since v7.15 is likely to be something unrelated to the original posters problem which is why I was hoping to keep the threads separate (the original issue is from before 7.15).

@mw0dcmplex The issue you have found is to do with the network cache I believe (this was introduced in v7.15), so I can understand the problem and find a solution I need the logs from a recent version of Plex for Android (ideally v7.18), since v7.15 we have introduced more player logging so we can better understand playback issues.

You’ve mentioned that you have posted them before in this thread and the new thread you made for your issue, but I can’t see any I’m afraid. If you could replicate the issue, and then grab the log zip and share it with me it will be a big help.

Info about fetching the logs is available here: https://support.plex.tv/articles/201573117-android-android-tv-fire-tv-logs/ .

@sixones You say you want the logs from 7.18.xxx I can only update to 7.19.xxx so where can we get 7.18 from? As I opted to be a beta tester for my sins on both Server and Android.
As I said in one of my earlier posts, my Android 8.1 powered Tablet works great with the network, it just seems to be this Android 6 powered smartphone.
I’ll gladly send in the logs once more then jump back to 7.14.9xx as this is the version before the regression took hold. As of network issues, I’ve got no issues at all, so if it’s the cache why isn’t it fixed? It’s seems this issue has been investigated since 7.15.xxx and as of yet not been resolved. As an ex developer I always fixed the main bugs first before adding new stuff, as this I know introduced new issues, Plex Devs if they’re good enough, should do the same???
