Playback issues on Xbox

Server Version#: 1.16.6.1592 on Linux
Player Version#: Web 3.108.2 / Xbox 2.38.0.70

So i have been having odd issues with playing some media on my Xbox, some movie media will only play for 20-40 minutes at which point it will just go into an endless buffering status and dashboard will show it is using anywhere from 10-30Mbps constantly while it is buffering endlessly.

Pausing and hitting Play again does not fix the buffering, but if I stop the playback and go back to the movie’s description screen and hit play again form there it will continue to play for another 20-40 minutes again from originally point it started buffering and it will rinse and repeat until there is no more movie left. However, those same movie files play fine in the web player and on my phone without any predicable buffering at 20-40 minute intervals. Also this only has been happening with some movies for about 4 weeks now. I do regularly update my pms to the latest versions as they come out.

The movies file in question are mkv, 1080p quality, x264 with varying audio

I have attached my logs from during a time when one movie file was endlessly buffering.

+1 seeing exactly the same behaviour on my Xbox. Running latest plexpass version of PMS but it’s been happening with older versions too.

If you don’t mind me asking how is the quality of the MKV files playing on your xbox? Also is it encoding or doing direct play? trying to solve and issue on my xbox now with quality and refusal to stream direct, only encode.

Please PM @Moussa with your issue he is currently gathering info to give to MS.

Also Please report this bug on your Xbox. A Lot of us have been having these exact buffering issues for a long time and maybe if enough of us report the issue it will get fixed.

For me 4k hdr files will play fine for 5-30 mins depending on the movie then buffer endlessly until I hit the back button then resume where I left off where it play fine and will start buffering again after the same period of time.

Mine are all mp4, and I have direct play disabled. Not played around with transcoding yet. Emby on the same box is also having issues so I’m wondering whether it’s related to the xbox insider build that I’m running. I

I’m also on insider but Xbox having buffering issues seems to transcend the insider program. Lots of people for a long time have random endless buffering loops.

+1 here on skip ahead.

@swanlee - is the playback time, for you, a constant number?
I mentioned in a previous post that buffering is happening at 6:50secs into some media. That number lines up every time it happens. Hit back, play, resume, and like clockwork…six minutes and 50 more seconds and it’s buffering. :watch:

Yup it happens consistently at 6.45 for me. Weirdly it seem that it only happens when watching a playlist as I watched other videos without issues.

Edit: nope not just on playlists.

For me it depends on the material, for one movie it was always between 19-20 mins never made it past 20, for another movie it was 5-6 mins never made it past 6 mins.

Once I figure out a video it does this with it may not do it every time in the exact second but within the same min.

I always have issue on my smart tv but now is the Xbox one app giving me trouble

weirdly I am getting this issue playing 480p videos it gets about 6-7 minutes in goes to a constant buffering loop, go back to menus and play can continue for another 6 minutes, rinse and repeat, thankfully only things I have like this are 22 minute programs so not as annoying as a 2-3 hr film

I also am having this issue. I am also an Xbox Insider, on the Skip-Ahead releases. I have submitted a report on this issue, so we will see what happens. Many times when I report something, it shows up as an issue in the next release notes, so we will see. I switched to a Roku player and had no issues playing the same content. I also only have this issue with 480p content. 1080p and DVR content plays just fine.

A lot of us have been reporting it for a few months no onthe insider builds and even got an Xbox dev to say they were looking at it on the insider reddit but so far nothing has been done to fix it.

It is now listed in the Alpha-Skip Ahead build notes as a known issue. In another thread in the Plex forums, another user got in contact with a dev team member who said they have added extra telemetry tracking to look into this.

Not sure if this will help but my issue is from 480p MKV files that have encoded subtitles that come up as Unknown (EIA_608) under subtitles section, turn these off and the video plays fine all the way through, turn the subs back on and its buffering every 6-8 minutes.

Yea that was me, the extra tracking did not help, when you launch the extra tracking and then launch Plex to reproduce the issue it kills your tracking session.

Have not heard back from the Xbox dev in well over a week even though I told him this tracking thing is not working.

Issues has gotten worse for me in last couple months. While I still get the buffering happening at certain intervals on media that has a longer run-time. Shorter playtime media now shudders in the beginning and sometimes throughout the entirety of the media like you were looking at a hand drawn carton and flipping through the pages real fast, along with audio becoming out of sync requiring me to do the stop and start routine as usual.

Additionally when this is happening, i see errors like this in the Plex Media Server log file when that issue is happening playing the media files through my Xbox.

I’m also having this issue on my Xbox one x with an MKV file. Every 7-8 minutes, buffered forever, back out and resume, and it works again. Changing the video quality and back out also stopped the buffering after it re-buffers

Same problem here with 4k file, the problem is exactly the same, random buffering, that vanish if I press the back button and play again from where it stopped.
With certain files with trueHD audio, however, i have endless buffering…
