Plex uses a consolidated metadata approach scraping data from TMDB, IMDB and TVDB.
They have some logic in their backend which scores the data it scrapes. However to my knowledge they have never shared details around this.
Is there something specific your trying to influence?
Plex uses TVDB and TMDB for TV shows but aggregates it to their own metadata platform.
If you update the info on one of those sites, there is generally a 24-72 hour waiting period for it to be updated.
For movies, Plex uses TMDB and IMDB and the same condition would occur.
Additional information just so you are aware. By default, for the modern series agent, Plex uses TMDB ordering. This can either be changed for the entire library to use one of 3 TVDB episode orderings or at a per series level. To do this, you would click the pencil (edit) icon either for the library (via the manage library submenu) or for the series (at the very top level, you will not see this option at the season level). In the edit modal that opens, go to the advanced tab and then scroll down and look for “Episode ordering” and select the option which you want then click save.
One other point to add is that if the links between the TMDB and TVDB are not correct, that can cause an issue. Both of those sites have fields to hold the ID from the other site. I have seen posts where that caused issues in either matching or displaying of the data (cannot remember which or if both).

I have several movies that dont get any metadata in plex.
I am in the process of adding entries into TMDB for those movies.
I guess, can I expect that that data will get captured by Plex once I have updated TMDB?
Are the movies also on the IMDB? I believe plex uses IMDB as a initial starting point for movies.
If they are on the IMDB make sure to add an external link at TMDB to IMDB linking to them together. This will help plex scrape the data.
Mind sharing what movies are giving you trouble?
As Dokuro wrote… Plex will also pick some information from IMDb, especially what’s categorized as movie, show or tv movie…
this is an example. Note that I just updated some stuff, so it wont all be there till tomrrow.
Looks like it might be part of a tv show… not a standalone movie. At least according to IMDb
Was about to say the same thing. Eventually they’ll probably be deleted at TMDB when a moderator finds them.
hmm… so TVDB?
I’m not sure. Can’t find much information about it other than a amazon dvd.
Might be worth putting it in a personal video library and then manually add the metadata you want.
checking ot see if I can add to TVDB
Keep adding series to TMDB. Just as a TV show, not as a movie.
thanks on that. Done.
So nexxt question… I have updated the TMDB entry. And in fact, tiny media manager captures and pulls down the information.
However, Plex, even with Plex Dance, does not. why wont plex update from the TMDB entry?
Plex doesn’t pull the data live from TMDb. It’ll first need to be picked up by Plex consolidated database… give it 1-2 days, then try matching the show again
thanks. WIll do… have a number of updates to make, so that works
