Hi Guys,
I’m absolutely devastated. I had the BEST experience with Plex on DSM 6, running the latest Intel package and an awesome plex pass. NEVER had a problem!
Running on a Synology DS218+
However I’ve completely gone and messed up my Plex, after an upgrade to DSM 7.0.
The problem is the libraries. My content sits in file station like this:
Volume1/Multimedia and below this in the multimedia I have
/Multimedia/Movies
/Multimedia/TV Shows
The problem is I can only now for some reason drill down to Volume1/Multimedia I cannot see any of my actual folders in Plex.
You must have missed my documentation about all the changes DSM 7 forced on us.
In this context;
I don’t think, in spite of what you’re showing me, System Internal User PlexMediaServer actually has permission to read the media. This explains why it cannot be seen. (DSM 7 is VERY strict now and Plex got neutered)
Do you still have a Plex shared folder?
If so, Do you still have a “Plex Media Server” folder in Library / Application Support ?
No I don’t have a Plex Shared Folder. I think at some point when faffing around I deleted it. For a list of my shares I have the below (Multimedia is the share with the content (directories called Movies and TV Shows)
It sounds like you did nuke everything which was holdover from DSM 6. That’s unfortunate. It wasn’t necessary to do that. I have been able to help save everyone’s so far.
Here are some options:
If you have PMS installed (the DSM 7 package) - this will help you fix the permissions to your media folders.
There are other things we can do. Please advise what your wishes are.
Following the sticky thread you posted under 1. - When I click on shared folder (multimedia) in file station, properties, then permissions. I am presented with local users.
There is no ‘PlexMediaServer’ listed here so I am unable to follow that sticky post point 2 - “Create a new permissions rule for PlexMediaServer”
" 2. There are other things we can do. Please advise what your wishes are."
My wishes are to undo the mess I’ve made by
Uninstalling Plex completely and reinstalling - I’ve tried this and it didn’t work
Finding a way to fix my existing permissions issues given the above. It would be great if there were some easy way to start afresh of course without losing my data on the NAS.
FYI - Finally I’ve also tried to re-create the Plex shared folder so it now exists. It’s empty obviously. Or is that no longer needed?
Depending on how much “uninstalling & deleting” you’ve done,
we might be able to find something on the NAS (your metadata)
The Plex share and user “Plex” are no longer needed in DSM 7.
(DSM 7 forced a change so I chose PlexMediaServer to match the app name).
At this point, also knowing what is about to release, I’d like you to step into the new package structure I have.
My reason for this is two fold.
If you have metadata stored in the DSM hidden area, We can pull it back
You’ll be all setup in the new structure and ready to go when it does release in the next “few-ish” days (I expect PMS 1.24.2 to have it… but no promises until I check)
I’d like you to install my new “Packaging 2.0” version.
You’ll see:
There is a “PlexMediaServer” shared folder now – so you can make backups
It will also allow for VERY CAREFUL limited editing in emergency cases via the GUI.
You’ll also see where I pasted a plethora of warnings about not putting media anywhere in that shared folder structure because it will cause PMS to blow up when mistakes are made.
Please read here then scroll down and get the SPK for your Syno and perform a Manual Install.
Let me know what you have after that.
You’ll either have your existing server instance (meaning you didn’t zero it all)
-or-
You’ll start fresh
