Plex DVR, Trying to watch Live TV but get error "Unable to tune channel (no parts)"

No dice with recording and commercial skipping two back to back programs. The first one did remove the commercials, but the second one just hung ALL DAY LONG. Wouldn’t go away until i restarted my Shield, and then of course, the recording was nowhere to be found. So I am just going to remove the option to remove commercials and just deal with skipping them on my own, or maybe someone has a script that I could run AFTER the recordings to do the commercial removal post-recording. Any ideas?

After searching all over for a solution and tinkering with all sorts of options on both my Shield and Win 10 PC I think I figured out what was causing my specific error…I’ve had my Plex server on the PC for years and just recently got a Shield. When I was setting up Plex on the Shield there was an option that I completely overlooked. It asked if I wanted to set up a Plex Media Server and the box was already checked. The server part didn’t register, I just thought I was installing the Plex client, so I went forward with the install.

After the install, whenever I would start Plex on the Shield, it would hesitate to start and then I would get the install screen again; this happened twice. On the third time I realized that it was setting up Shield as another server! When I unchecked the box and ran the install again all my issues disappeared!

It’s been a full week now and I haven’t had any issues/errors on any client or the server.

So if your having this problem, double check that you don’t have 2 servers running at the same time. I would imagine they are both trying to access your TV tuner and causing conflicts with the main server.

I hope this helps someone.

I also had a Plex Server on my PC for many years, and I also just got a Shield. I also have an HD Homerun Quatro. I don’t have a problem running two Plex servers. (The one on my PC, and the one on my Shield.) They both are working as expected now except the commercial removal that I am currently trying to figure out.
I run BOTH servers everyday because I am tweaking the server on my Shield and want to make sure I still have my recordings and such. I will retire my Plex server on my PC, (my laptop), and give it a break once all the bugs are worked out with commercial removal because the Shield will do the same job without using so much power like my laptop currently does.

Long story short, you should be able to run multiple Plex servers on your network without issue.

Yes I actually run 3 plex servers, shield, windows and Linux.

Good to know others have the same setup without issue. Perhaps there were other underlying circumstances causing my problems, but ever since I did this my errors went away. I was just thinking, you are intentionally running multiple servers and it sounds like you actually set them up. In my case, it wasn’t my intention to have multiple servers and I never fully set it up so I’m still thinking it had something to do with the errors. I could be wrong, but again, deactivating the Plex server on Shield fixed things for me.

Also, I want to point out that I was having some weird network issues with the HDHomeRun where it wasn’t appearing under my connected devices in router settings but it was still connecting to the internet. Also had a weird issue where my Harmony Hub started acting up and would randomly turn the wrong things on/off. For all I know, my issues could have been caused by IP conflicts… But all is in order now.

One last thing… I did have a Hauppauge tuner connected to my PC before the HDHomeRun, and I never uninstalled the software for that product, so there’s another factor to throw into the mix, but it wasn’t connected at the same time as the HDHomeRun.

Same issue here. CentOS 7, FireTV stick client, HDHomeRun EXTEND, Plexpass. The show recording starts, but I can’t seem to watch the recording in progress from the beginning on the FireTV stick. It works properly on my iOS devices (iPhone/iPad) – and what’s frustrating is you can’t cast from iOS devices in Plex to either FireTV stick or to Chromecast! Please fix this Plex.

So does anyone from Plex actually check this forum and try and supply a solution? I went ahead and purchased the lifetime plex pass assuming that I wouldn’t have any issues but now I wish I didn’t. I haven’t been able to tune any channel at all, ever. If I use the HDHomeRun app, everything works fine. The second I use the Plex app, nothing. “Playback Error. Unable to tune channel.” EVERY.TIME! I’m about to ask for a refund because this is ridiculous. If you can find my channels, you’re clearly getting a signal so why can’t the server tune them? As I said, it’d be nice if someone from Plex actually cared about their customers and offered a solution. I’ve been trying for the last couple weeks and if I can’t get a solution, I 100% want my money back because I’m not paying for something that never works.

Hi all:

I’m a new plex user, and am using an HDHomeRun Extend and an HDHomeRun Dual. My system was working at install, but suddenly one channel (and ONLY this one channel) is giving me the “unable to tune channel (no parts)” error. I’ve restarted my PMS and server several times, and it still doesn’t work. On the just released 1.13.5.5291 version.

I see this goes back years…still no fix? My situation seems a bit odd, as its only one channel that is effected (well, all subcarriers of a single channel: 2.1, 2.2, 2.3 won’t tune but 3.1 does, etc.)

Any ideas?

Thanks!

I was having an issue with both of my HDHomeRun Extends. Couldn’t record or tune channels from PLex and it just stopped working randomly. HD Connect app was working fine. I changed the transcode profile from Heavy to Mobile (From HD HomeRun Device Menu > Transcode Configuration) and it is now working great. Can tune channels even days later and all recordings are succeeding. I’m also rebooting the PMS and both HD Homerun tuners using automated scripts each night. hope this helps someone!

Today, I just so happened to go onto the webpage for my HDHomerun Connect Quatro, and noticed a firmware update available (20180817). So I installed that, and tried Live TV once again, and my experience has improved by 100 times, it was completely unusable before, especially on HD channels, now though, channels tune quickly and stay working, HD works fine.

I have owned this HDHR device for over 6 months, and I am finally able to use it after trying so many different things to make it work.

I’m back, 6 days later. I have the latest up-to-date firmware for the Tuners and Plex is on the most current version available currently, still the issues with being unable to tune to channel and recording failures came back. So…I completely uninstalled my plex media server (https://support.plex.tv/articles/201941078-uninstall-plex-media-server/). It really wasn’t as big of a pain to add the libraries, recording schedules and other settings back as I thought it would be. Today is day 2 with my new server install and so far it is working great. No rebooting of the server or tuners has been required. Will update this thread again if this didn’t fix it.

I have gone through all these steps, aside from reinstalling everything, and nothing works. I have updated the firmware to the latest for my HD HomeRun Connect Quatro, I have the latest version of Plex Pass server. Whenever I attempt to view live TV via Plex the service dies. There is nothing obvious that I can see in the logs. Can anyone help?

Below are my logs. It shows initial startup, then the service dies, and then I start it again:

One of the other things mentioned was to roll back to a specific server version. Does anyone know what version to go back to?

I tried rolling back as well and still had problems. I went back to when I “knew” it was stable (mid June) In the end, I do not regret the full uninstall and reinstall of 1.13.6.5339. It’s been running perfectly for days now and even tuning to the premium channels just fine. No regular server reboots and no tuner reboots. Only complaint is that the premium channels are choppy and have audio sync issues on plex but that is for other forum topics (HDHOMERUN Premium TV stuttering/buffering & Plex DVR with HDHomeRun Quatro Premium Subscription, OTA great, Premium choppy and out of sync).
Just wanted to mention it because the reinstall did not help with that.

There may be several causes for this error. It could be that there was an earlier error or there may be timeouts. Best is to get logs with debug logging enabled for the first such error after restarting the server

So please ensure debug logging is enabled
See https://support.plex.tv/articles/201643703-reporting-issues-with-plex-media-server/

To clear error flags please restart the server at this point
and on first persistent failure to tune - please capture a screenshot and the server logs
See https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/

Could you give details of your setup and list of channels and territory / guide

and get some logs to see what the error is

Please ensure debug logging is enabled
See https://support.plex.tv/articles/201643703-reporting-issues-with-plex-media-server/

restart the server at this point to get fresh logs created

Reproduce the problem and test several channels - and note down details and times of tests and results

and get the server logs
See https://support.plex.tv/articles/200250417-plex-media-server-log-files/

Attach here with the requested info

Please get the server logs so that the crashes can be investigated

First make sure the server has debug logging enabled
See
https://support.plex.tv/articles/201643703-reporting-issues-with-plex-media-server/

Then restart the server to get fresh logs created

Do whatever you did before to get the server to crash
Note down the time

Restart the server and download the server logs
and attach here with the details

I just noticed the tuning issue. I went back to the release prior to August 18th - Version 1.13.5.5291 and Live TV came back again. Running on a Mac.

**update - worked for awhile and now no longer works. If I restore the version of Plex, works for a few times and then stops. Anyone else get it working? If so, what version of Plex and where can we get a copy?

I went through the instructions provided to enabling logging. As it turns out I had both debug and verbose logging turned on. I turned off verbose and restarted the Plex service. When it came back up the tuner integration was working as expected. I tried turning verbose back on to see if that was the issue and it still worked. Turned it off again, it still works. I have no idea what the issue was but these are the steps I performed and live TV viewing from my HD Homerun Quatro is now working.

After reading through this thread, it seems like there is no reasonable path to a solution to get an hdhomerun quatro to work correctly with live tv / dvr. I have tried the restarting of the plex media server and the hdhomerun more then once with no success. I just get unable to tune channel every time i try to watch something. The hdhomerun app works perfectly fine though so I have been using that, I did however get this mainly to dvr live tv. Is there going to be any support for this from Plex? After digging it seems like this has been going on for quite awhile and people seem to suggest just using emby as they don’t have that problem…
