Plex for Xbox One incessantly buffering

Same. Never had issues and now I updated and having all sorts of buffering and skipping problems.

I have been having this issue for several months. Seems exclusive to Xbox One. Because the same video plays in web browsers, on phone, and off of my PS4 just fine. How did something that worked perfectly a few months ago suddenly cease working?!

This issue has been happening to me for quite some time as well. The issue from what I’ve gathered in my own experience definitely includes audio transcoding to the Xbox One console. Unfortunately, Plex does not seem to do any local transcoding (even on the more-powerful One X) and some of these TrueHD 7.1 audio streams and Atmos streams are murdering my CPU and tying up some RAM in the process as well (I have 8GB of DDR4 on my server PC that runs the Plex Media Server with about 40-50% free at all times with the Plex Media Server app running in the background. When I go to play 4K HDR videos with either Atmos, TrueHD, and sometimes even the AC3 5.1 audio tracks, I can get a buffering notice within minutes of starting the video stream. Once in a while I can get 15-20 minutes into a stream but it inevitably hits that buffering point and the app even gets unresponsive on the Xbox One X console that I own and use for Plex network streaming. I have a capable AC1900 router that has zero problems transferring larger files over the network at good, high speed rates over long periods of time so I highly doubt it’s an issue with my network. It seems to be the Xbox Plex client app that has a lot of issues. I don’t get Direct Play for audio but I typically get Direct Play for SOME 4K video content - perhaps x265 formats but I’m not 100% certain.

Plex REALLY needs to get their app right on the Xbox and get Direct Play for high end audio. Heck, Microsoft has a good relationship with Dolby and support the Atmos standard on the Xbox platform from what I’ve read. This can’t be a Microsoft issue - this is a Plex issue and I really don’t see how the hell a $150 Nvidia Shield can blow away a $500 Xbox One X console with dramatically more local power and software support than the Shield gets. Please do some work and get to the bottom of this. The fact that this has been an issue for a very, very long time speaks poorly of Plex and has made me concerned with the platform as a whole and has made me consider other alternatives as they also have Xbox app options. Hell, I can just network stream some of this content and it does a better job than Plex but I’d rather have a nice, neat network app via Plex if I can. But this has been unacceptable and remains a reason why I’d never invest serious money into Plex. I bought the mobile apps for iOS and Android and that’s all I’m willing to invest until these issues get sorted otherwise I’d be blowing my money on a broken system.

They can fix the audio quickly if they just allow pass through.

Having this exact same issue as from yesterday, now it stutters when skips, and the play status bar doesn’t indicate the skip. Skipping back does all sorts of crazy things including going forward instead of back. I have uninstalled the app, re-installed, nothing. Extremely frustrating!

@Moussa, any update on updating the app on the xbox one? Again, this worked fine a few months ago.

I’m not convinced this is an xbox one issue, it’s now happening on web and panasonic and ipad also…

lots of other noise on other platforms in this forum, seems to be a server bug.

i have the same issue, and they only happen to me on the xbox one. Im having the same buffering issue with Emby now too, the only thing that hasnt changed since this issue started is my xbox one s

I too am having this never ending 4k buffering. It’s inconsistent, some really high bitrate files play fine while others, with lower bitrates, buffer. Further, I can cast these files to my one x, bypassing Plex, and they play just fine. Please fix this!

Still having the same issue :frowning: anybody with a workaround?

Enable DLNA and use Kodi or VLC on Xbox. I switched my encoder back from HEVC to H.264 and haven’t had any buffering issues with Plex. I don’t have any 4k content though. All mine is 1080p at roughly 10Mbps depending on the movie.

What settings are needed to make this work?

Enable DLNA in your Plex server first. It looks like I can’t get VLC to work with my current setup but if you use the default media player app for Xbox you should be able to launch that and see your server automatically. It might take a minute or two for the media play app to find it initially. Alternatively, if you’re on Windows you can bypass Plex completely and turn on media sharing. Open Windows Media Play and point your video folders to your libraries. I can’t speak to how well this works with different media types a I re-encode all my media to H.264 MKV which works perfectly in all apps.
Edit:
VLC works just fine by going to browse. Just like the media player app it took a bit to discover the plex DLNA broadcast.

Apologies for cross-posting, but I need some results as well and want to increase the chance of someone who works for Plex taking notice: I have the same issue, and I’ve been beating my head against the wall looking at CPU, GPU, RAM, Disk IO, network and trying various clients. Before even reading your thread, I had identified that the buffering seems to happen around 50-60Mbps+ bitrates.

I can not find a bottleneck in the systems I can control. I was having an issue with IO, but I moved the temp folder for transcoding from a RAID array to an SSD. The issue materializes on both XB1X, my 2018 LG C8 TV and a Sony XBR. The specs on the LG OLED do say that software installed on the TV only supports bitrate up to 50Mbps, but I’m not sure if that limitation comes into play with 3rd party sw like Plex or not. However, this doesn’t explain why the $500 Xbox One X chokes.

I’m running on Linux with sufficient hardware. I’m a tech consultant in my day job, so I have a pretty good grasp of all of the moving pieces involved, and I can only point at the software client at this point. Can anyone from the Plex team please shed some light on this issue? I’m avoiding that type of bitrate for now, because I have spent far more time than I should have trying to troubleshoot this issue. Thanks.

Found a really good fix for this, guys! Bought the latest AppleTV. No problems so far. After 18 months of these buffering problems I think it’s pretty likely Plex for Xbox One will never work again.

Reposting my response from another thread:

Hi all. Sorry for the lack of updates here, but thats been mostly due to the fact that we don’t have many updates to report around this area yet. But we’ve been in contact with Microsoft about the issue trying to find a solution for what we believe is a platform issue, and perhaps find a workaround that we can implement that doesn’t involve something drastic like adding a bitrate cap. Microsoft are still investigating it and we’re providing help with their investigations where we can. A while back they released some changes that I know helped a fair few users but obviously there are still users, in and out of this thread, that are affected. We’re continuing to work to find a solution and hope to find one in the near future, we are by no means sitting on the issue!

Hi all. I have some good news for you. Microsoft let me know today that they have tracked down the source of the issue and a fix will be making its way into the Xbox One 1904 update. Users on the Insider rings will see the update earlier, before a wider launch to all users sometime in April. Thanks again for your patience.

Hi all. A system update with the fix for the buffering issue is now available to users in the Preview Alpha and Preview Beta Rings, ahead of a public release in April. Please see https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2019/03/13/new-preview-alpha-and-beta-ring-1904-build-3-13-19/ for more details. Once again, thanks for your patience while we worked with Microsoft to pin down this particularly tricky issue.

Hi @GreenFern. A sample file that reproduces the issue would be very helpful to us and Microsoft indeed! Please feel free to PM me with one.

Work around here , hope this helps!
