Plex Just Ruined Their Roku App

Did a restart and still no music

I have been in the software business a long time and this has to be the WORST upgrade I have seen in my career. It is completely useless. It is very obviously they didn’t test this at all. I can’t even browse any of my libraries. The only things I can watch are on the Home page. I have been a loyal fan of Plex. I even pay for Plex Pass. However, given this piece of garbage, I just might have to cancel and move away from Plex entirely. I use Plex as one of major media consumption apps on my TV (roku box) and this just killed 50% or better of my viewing each night.

Plex if you are reading this - revert to the old interface and get some people who know what they are doing.

I want a rollback to the previous app that actually functioned! Scrap this new app design. Fire the people who designed it! More importantly fire the people that approved forcing this on us all!

Who decided my interface needed to change? I got a terrible surprise when I logged into Roku tonight. I hate, hate, hate, the new interface, who can we complain to?

Idiots in an office with no ties to reality or customer satisfaction are the ones responsible for forcing this.

Anyone having functionality issues with Roku; I spent 4 hours today recovering from Roku’s forced and unwanted update (that all but bricked my Roku 4). After trying everything and being guided by Google’s AI (because Roku ā€˜help’ is a travesty), I finally had to do a factory reset after taking pictures to document all my settings. Apparently the Roku 4 update got stuck somewhere due to a bug. When I finally got things running on the Roku I had Plex’s regressive new interface to greet me.

I honestly don’t care about watching anything other than what is on MY Plex server. I deliberately delete all the Plex garbage. Now this update forces that junk on me and makes it harder for me to do the ONLY thing I want to do. NOT HAPPY.

Exactly. Even when you disable all that online media crap from your Plex account on the Plex website this new update forces it on the Roku Plex app. It’s total BS!

Now when I got to the ā€œSettingsā€ portion of the new Plex, I can not navigate anywhere in there. What did you guys do? No beta testing before you rolled it out? Why didn’t I get a choice to upgrade or not?

Hit the nail on the head. The dev team should have listened to the old saying of ā€œif it ain’t broke don’t fix itā€

I totally agree, Plex must offer the users which experience they want, the new UI is counterintuitive, pretty hard to get into if for an experienced user and just imagine how hard it will be for a new or elderly user, unfortunately the backend of plex is what I like the most, so it will be pretty hard to get into the new UI, unless they realize they must give the user an option to use the old interface, please do it, the new UI is awkward.

I found an option you can enable to make browse the default over recommended. Very small victory - I hate everything about this new interface, but at least by going to browse by default it brings me closer back to the familiar interface showing all the content. But even in that they screwed it up by removing the filters - just sort is there now.

Yes! Once a show starts to play, each button on my remote makes a sound, but does nothing! Stop, Rew, FF… nothing. The home button successfully closes Plex and I can restart it, but that’s it. This is god-awful QA, a poor design, and no ability to go back to the old version. Inexcusable!

i just removed app, then reinstalled and everything works perfectly fine….

just remove the app on the tv, then reinstall, just did this 5 minutes ago and works fine now …i aslo couldnt navigate with remote other than select a show , start and stop…now all controls work as they should

Same here! Like 100% of other Plex users (seriously, can you point to a single example of anyone saying they LIKE these changes?), I’m absolutely furious that another horrible Plex update has been FORCED upon me. The 8.6 (Build 4) upgrade pretty much ruined everything I enjoyed about Plex on Roku. None of my theme music, whether for TV shows or Movies, will play now on the Roku app (though it still does on the desktop/Web version of Plex, but what good is that, since I want to use my TELEVISION to watch my media?!), and I spent ages customizing theme songs for my entire media library.

The new user interface is also absolute garbage, as they eliminated the convenient and simple-to-use vertical list of pinned library ā€œchannelsā€/categories on the left side of the screen in favor of a stupid horizontal list/bar that takes a few extra clicks even to access.

What’s more, they even eliminated the wallpaper/background art and matching color schemes that I had set up for all of my movies!

I also don’t ever want to see ā€œLive TVā€ or ā€œOn Demandā€ or ā€œDiscoverā€ or anything else that I will never use and have NO interest in, Plex. Give us back the option to hide this useless clutter from our menus/home screens, etc.

These awful updates should be OPTIONAL rather than being imposed upon everyone against their will, Plex. Give users the option of using the classic Plex GUI that so many of us are so accustomed to using and enjoying. As it is, you have rudely disrupted our lives for no justifiable reason whatsoever. Nobody asked for any of this. To quote another commenter, you guys apparently operate by the philosophy, ā€œIf it ain’t broke, let’s break it!ā€

With that said, does anyone know if there is any way to install an older version of the Roku Plex app, such as the great Plex Classic, which was discontinued (apparently) a few years ago? Or is there any alternative home media streaming app for Roku that works like the OLD Plex (when it was great), and that will play custom theme music (i.e., simply by dropping an mp3 in the root directory of a TV show or Movie)?

Thanks in advance.
